Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

No real progress, doing some pondering on the rear bench height so I can build support in support for it. I want to have some alum. sub structure as part of the transom brace, really got to get the bench height figured out.
Floor and backrest mock up

Want to use all the hidden space above and below the future bench for storage

Got some goodies, rivets and magic riveter:D

Happy Thursday!!

That's going to be a sweet set up at the stern there. Kick the engine otta the boat and you score all kinds of room!:D

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Kicked some butt tonight on the rest of the rear substructure. Mocked up the rear bench and got my heights figured out! Welded in supports and brackets, looks good to me! AHHH problem though, camera cord MIA pics in the morning. Also got the floor stringers primed, and installed, front seat boxes are riveted down too. My new air riveter from Fastenal may be the best 85$ ever, I struggled Tuesday night with a hand riveter not wanting to get em tight before snapping half the shank off and leaving me with a porcupine problem:eek::mad:, no more of that, one kachunk and done. SWEET:D Feeling good on the progress, one more time of taking it all apart and prepping to reinstall and the transom will be done, maybe by Monday.
Have a great night:)

100_1468.jpg

Made a mock up of part of the bench to use as a pattern
100_1470.jpg

And in aluminum, had some 1/4 sheet left for the side gussets, 2x2 tube hole sawed out for bolt through to the stringers

Oh boy, where do I start? Ah Ok, last night got the transom/seat bracket welded out and smoothed out, ready for primer. Transom wood got sanded and acetone wipe down, coated one side with epoxy.
100_1484.jpg

Has some scorch marks from tacking the seat bracket together
100_1483.jpg

Went home and dug ol69's trailer out of the weeds, my cart at work is getting a little long in the tooth with us tromping around in the boat, it was just for painting the bottom, not supporting the boat upright. Drug it to work today.
100_1486.jpg

Got lots of help today so we got after it
Cody on a wire wheel
100_1498.jpg

We broke the trailer completely apart

The "bolt on" axle brackets had been welded at some point in its life, I cut em off the frame, I figure i will have to change the center of gravity on the trailer. had to add some weld,
100_1511.jpg

and smooth it back out
100_1510.jpg

Meanwhile, I was doing some priming, roller panels, bolster brackets and rear seat structure
100_1497.jpg

100_1517.jpg

And my other crew, Logan and Anthony, dry fitting and prepping some wood for epoxy
100_1504.jpg

Had to cut the back floor piece for thr seat bracket

Back at the trailer, I scrounged up some rust killing paint (maybe it works) And side note, this trailer is pretty rough, I will continue my hunt for a double axle Caulkins, doing this one up as a get me through thought!?!
100_1515.jpg

Set up out side
100_1522.jpg

100_1524.jpg

And went to work with the Chassis saver, (stickiest stuff ever)
100_1542.jpg

Another side note, epoxy crew tried using pigment in the epoxy, we got it from US compsites, not impressed, kicked of like a rocket, went back to no pigment in it and no problems. Chassis saver paint, ah should been in better ppe, tyvek and full mask, I have a non removable black tint to me, and white gloves for hands!!!!!!!!!!LOL

At the end of the day we went from this

to this

100_1549.jpg

100_1556.jpg

100_1552.jpg

Will spray the zero rust white I have after assembly.
And a coat of epoxy

For all the work it took it doesn't seem like a lot done on paper, I know it is, but this does not do it justice.

Looks like a lot to me. Now beyond being envious of the shop you get to work in, I have to be envious of the fact you have a crew? :D
Looking good MD have to watch now just to see how the trailer holds up.

Ya, currently under another boat, love it, would like a dual under the ol Islander, I may switch em around yet. That Caulkins loads and unloads like a dream!

Yeah, love mine too. I see a tandem axle Caulkins at the Battle Point/Odawa launch a lot when I'm taking my 14'er out.
