Quality Control Manager for a sales/service/rental company specializing in Industrial Hygiene and Safety. If it's touched by OSHA or NIOSH we have it. Spend most of my day talking and verifying plans with guys like OldPharte. Prior to that was a general lab tech and warehouse manager for the same company.

I've been everything from a truck driver to a corporate VP. I've also worked in a number of business arenas, with aviation and the entertainment business being the longest running "gigs."

Commercial Construction Manager.
We specialize in high-end retail fit-outs, and about 1/3 of our projects are located inside US airport terminals. Working efficiently within the mandated TSA guidelines can often be, um, challenging.

Business Technology Consultant - ie., what do you do, what do you want to do, and what is the most efficient technology solution to get from a to b.

Network engineer - design, setup & maintain computer networks.

Pretty much anything computer related if the person can afford my time (boats are an expensive hobby :)). Smallest I've worked for is a 1 man show, largest has over 5000 workstations.

Re: Main Occupation?

Started with Metalurgy and Machinist ticket,

I got into welding right out of Tech school, and then ended up tigging character changes on automotive body dies (that was cool.) Then I got into stress related welding and machining (bridge girders and booms for cranes.) But..., I always went back to trucking.

I went back to school and aced an aircraft maintenance tech course, got the apprenticeship and did a few years of stuff I liked and then went into helicopters, but none of the aircraft fields interested me for too long, as I was too involved to enjoy it, although I love aircraft and flying.

I did get my fixed wing pilots license, and flew legally for a while (Didn't like flying the Eggbeaters too much, too many rotating things to selfdestruct, and too expensive to get a license for), but I still have more hours on me that were NOT logged then the other way around!
Since a sense of humor is hard to come by any more for state officials, I quit that too. (I know....I'm a rebel!)

I had my nose into boats (read ships) from early in life as a grandson to a freighter outfit owner (he was a bosun and other neat things for a good stretch, 'til he got his own outfit going), and my dad was a sailor and held some good spots doing that, until I showed up.

Most of the relatives are Captains, Owners or otherwise involved in shipping and some of them are very successful, too bad the family has a feuding problem! (keeps me away!)

I had a feed business, a trucking outfit, another trucking outfit, but hated working them.
I am not built to be a business guy. I want my freedom and my rights!

I owned trucks from way back 'til about 4 years ago, when I finally gave up owning the Critters (that business thing again) and got into buddy's truck instead to make him quit asking, and I still do that today because he pays very generously for what I do, and surprisingly enough, it doesn't bore me.

A few million more jobs would make me a thousand years old to have done them, but I came close!

Boats and water have always attracted me, but for some stupid reason I never persued that avenue, duh!

Now I enjoy small boats, making old things work again, and I'm having a good time with it.
I am learning about a new department in boating, that being the I/O phenomena, But I don't think "boating" magazine will ever do a story on MY creations! (Red Green would probably like my stuff.)

How do you write a resume on all of that??

PH.

Re: Main Occupation?

Well , at 14 my dad bought a store , so that started me cutting meat and every thing else that went with it !! while still in school , I was taking career opportunity center , Major appliance repair, started my own shop out of the garage , bought all the machines out of a laundry matt, and sold then to a couple of trailer parks , and homes , worked for a couple of company's, doing heat and air ..
Went into tha army at 18 , cannon cocker , just did my 3 and was out , well didn't do my last 6 months , dad broke his leg and had to come back and run the store !!! he slipped on a small patch of ice and Brock it in 3 spots !!
did that for a couple more years.
Then went to collage for a couple , meet my ex, and drooped out , she was prego, went back to cutting meat , well couldn't get a cutter job , was just a meat clerk, and then got laid off , so unenjoyment was offering classes on Machinist , so did that work for a couple place , frist grinding , plus and mins of .0001 Petty tight stuff , then got divorced and moved and got a lath job , man i loved that thing I could make the chips fly !! then wouldn't you know it thats when 911 hit and every thing started going down hill , place went belly up !!!
So while looking for another job , me and a buddie started a roofing comany just a small one , but he got to thinking he didnt have to get on a roof !! yea , so i did it for a while and did some wiring of houses ,
You ask why i didnt work for dad, well two hard headed hunkys [ Hungarians ] dont work well together , and the neighborhood was really going down hill , Infact we just sold the store last week !! and back then dad was sick , and we lost him 6 months later !!
So I was working not so steady then and meet my now wife , so went back to cutting , not to Tut my own horn , but i am great at it !! I want my own shop but with the way the economy is right now , I am just waiting !!
So 27 years cutting meat , army , roofer, major appliance, repair, Machinist ..
OOHh i was going to school to become a Vet, lol John

Re: Main Occupation?

Hmmm, Worked at a car wash (family owned), gas jockey and whatever else needed done at a marina, tour boat captain, fishing guide, Detailist and minor car mechanic, ***'t parts & service manager - sales manager - general manager, family car dealership, school bus driver, pastor, administrator/director of Biblical and Vocational Training School in Ghana, West Africa.

What do I do now? Pastor, Director of the School in Ghana, sell a few cars here and there just to keep active in the car business, volunteer Fire Fighter/EMS. Nothing that pays, but it keeps me busy and it is always enjoyable to help others.

Re: Main Occupation?

I am a Naval Architect currently working on a floating production hull. I have paid my dues to the restaurant, hardware store, and pizza delivery gods and have finally found something I really enjoy doing. I can't believe the stares I get when I tell people that I love my job, they think I am crazy I guess but the jokes on them. Do what you love and you will never work a day.
