* be sure to check under your car(s) & seats regularly. The early rising, coffee swilling, Michigan madman boat builder will remember this event, and may harbor ill will towards ChrisCraft glassers enough to pickup a CC donor, just 'cause[/QUOTE]
there could be alot of truth in that

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

I swear I heard somebody say Sawzall.

:D

Yep, there he is ^^^

I may have forgotten to mention sawzall in his description:facepalm:

What is it they say about keeping your friends close???? That guy is most definitely not a friend to glassers. Kind of elevates it to maniacal. And bears witness to it as a point of pride:eek:

If he's carrying anything other then an empty coffee mug, don't give that guy boarding privileges;)

Ride out the waves, the storm will pass..

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Guys - I really appreciate the encouragement. Am I bummed - yes? Am I bummed to the point that I have been shopping for tinnies on Craigslist? - ummm, sadly, the answer is yes. Am I going to quit on this? - Nah!!! Never.

As Wolf said (and by the way I really appreciate the kind post Wolf!!) -- a lot of what I am doing is completely new to me. Considering this is my first boat restore, it would have been an abject miracle to get through this without a few mistakes and set-backs... That' why I named the thread "man vs boat" (didn't expect this to be easy)... and yes, there will be a season 2 and possibly more.

I have had a nice vacation these past few days at the beach with the fam... As Troop and Wolf and JBC said, good time to rest and reflect on the journey. Its been almost a year since I started this whole process with a impulse $300.00 buy on ebay. I have learned a ton and met new friends in Michigan, West Virginia, Louisiana, Florida, Texas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Nebraska and a couple of crazy Canucks in there too... (I am sure I left a few out).

You guys are good people! Thanks very much for helping out and pushing me along.

Your welcome. If I see anything that I can help with I'll chime in. I tried a restore project once. It was a 22 foot Winner CC with a 470 Merc. It needed a compleat restore but I liked the boat and picked it up for $400. Engine was junk and allot of the wood was bad. I hadn't gotten very far on it when I blew out my knee ( playing with another project a 77 classic boats of Austin ) and had to sell both of them to pay bills. Kinda wish I still had that Winner.

Quit???...after all you been through...heck, let me get a flight up there and show you the meaning of quit...NOT!!!

Brother Patrick, like has already been said...you have come so far with so little to start with and accomplished so much, that I just know this little, teeny, weeny, itsy, bitsy minor hiccup is no where near enough for you to contemplate quitting...

Buying a tinny to smooth over your ruffled feathers, wellllll... OK...But quitting??? Nah! No Way! Not gonna happen!

That is all, Carry On!...

:p

Hey Patrick if you really want that tinny I can hook you up... Just needs to be gutted and have about 50 rivets fixed... But if you really don't want to fix it just throw about 10 bilge pumps in her because that's about how fast she takes on water... Needs new interior... Got an OMC cobra drive and a 4.3... Will hold like 30 people! Don't let the 7 person max label fool ya... Found a picture of one that somebody else has but our old one is in no where near as good as shape... Lol

It looks like a bar of soap floating in the water and youll need a bigger truck to tow it because it weighs about as much as a small yacht but the price is good! Haha jk with ya man... I once belonged to a tinny family almost sank it it too! Good luck on the hull problems... Hopefully it's an easy fix!

PC, Two pics, Approximately of the same size @ the approximate same angle would be of great help to determine the extent of the problem. Having said that, I'm sorry to say, but I believe this will need to be addressed. Refresh my Ol' Okie Brain and Tell me if the Deck is tabbed in???

I don't think so, & I don't think the stringers are fully tabbed/glassed, as best I remember...

With the cap still in place and the boat on the trailer, I think he could lift the weight off the bow just a little and cut the stringers lose and the hull will take its shape fairly easy. Rebed the stringers and make any adjustments to the hieght and glass em in..

Yeah, somethun along those lines^^^^. Maybe a bit more persuasion would be required but it has and can be done without to much of and issue.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Foam or even cardboard is often used under stringers and bulkheads to keep them from "printing" through to the outside of the hull when the glass shrinks during curing. I doubt that small dent would affect performance that far forward but it doesn't look good. I would do as others said and cut the stringer free and retab. Don't think it will find its own shape again, to much glass in the tabbing you would have to remove. Just cut it free and use small wedges to regain the original shape. No ruler here, wedge it out and use your eyes to make port and starboard sides look the same. When they match, tab it in again and it will be wonderful.

I have to agree with the above post. I'd cut it free and give it a couple days to see if it regains it's shape. Help it along with some wedges. I'd be looking at freeing up about 4 to 6 feet of the stringer. Once you get it back in shape with wedges, lets say along a 5 foot stretch......I would pull out the middle wedges and glass at that point. After the glass has cured, and everything looks good....I'd inject some bedding like PL under the section you glassed. Then remove the remaining wedges, since the middle will be supporting the new shape...inject more bedding the rest of the length loosened and glass it in. Should be easy enough to do, not worth getting upset about. A minor set back at the most.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Well, guys. The theory sounded good on paper, but the field test did not pan out so well....

The problem is I did really thick bedding and fillets.... So getting a precise cut close to the hull to achieve that "separation" was next to impossible.... I tried everything - air tool with cutting disc... Grinder with thin cut blade (broke 2); 3 sawzall blades (broke all three) and my "zap saw" (which I ended up frying in the process)....

Here is my about half way through the job. I am essentially taking a mulligan from mid-boat forward... Everything is coming out. Ground through my hull in another place too, which was a fun bonus...:confused::mad:

On the positive side, since I am probably the first person that has had to demo brand new stringers and bulk-heads, I can report to you that the standard way we do this is REALLY strong.... I know water can do its thing over a period of years, but rest assured that as long as you don't deform your boat (like I did), your resto projects should have a long shelf life.

Ditto^^^^...:(...

At the very least, a couple of lessons to be learned by all, make sure you're hull is properly supported and you had done a stellar job rebuilding the structure...

You'll battle through this and come out the winner with the total and complete satisfaction that it got done right!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Yes, indeed.... In retrospect, I could/should have built a better cradle. I felt/looked good at first, but you may recall that I "blew out" a caster wheel and my whole assembly cratered a bit... I walked into the shop one day and the boat was just about on the ground.... (I think it had been that way for a couple of days).... I had to jack up the boat; change the caster, and re-build the assembly... I am sure that didn't help either.

The only good thing ,if there is one ,you found out just how strong all the fillets and tabbing are . Just press on do what ya gotta do and stay positive ! You'll have it whipped in no time !
