Link and synch?

Replace any fuel filters.

Richen the idle mixture to allow easier acceleration.
Thanks Chris, yep done filter and link/sync. Didnt know you could richen the carbs up on these, outside of jet changes. Would it pick up on the starter fluid if it was lean though?

UPDATE - so managed to water test it again yesterday. Still wont pick up in the water, it bogs. Took this video as we sprayed starter fluid into the intake and feathered the throttle to keep it running (no change, it doesn't pickup)

Updated list up things I've replaced and done below:
  • Carbs stripped, cleaned and reassembled
  • Link and Sync
  • New Fuel filters
  • New OEM switch boxes
  • New coils, leads and plugs
  • Compression check (130 PSI all pots)
  • New CDI Stator
  • New CDI Pickup
  • New Impeller and water pump
  • External electric fuel pump has solid 6PSI on gauge
  • Reverted to new mechanical fuel pump (actually worse)
  • Bypassed boat tank to outboard tank to alleviate that side
This is it running out of the water on hose.

I'll pull the reeds and check those this week. Its really not happy at all.
Any other ideas please?

The early 90's and older Merc V6 motors had fixed idle jets. My '93 has adjustable idle jets. I would have thought your motor would have adj jets.

Merc's without accelerator pumps have a history of needing a bit more richening of the idle jets to allow acceleration. The IL6 motors were known for this. The V6 motors seem to be more tolerant.

Flywheel magnet checked ?-----Recheck all wires from switch boxes to the coils.-----Sounds like it is running on 4 of 6 cylinders.

chris, his motor has tha older WH's that have been changed which do not have anyway ta change idle except jetting.. his motor came with WMH's...

its sounds 'lectric ta me... parts and/or wiring... if ya spray fluid in it and it does nothing but bog its not firing on all cylinders for whatever reason.... fillin' up tha holes but something ain't firin' tha plug??? only hittin' on maybe 3 or 4....

know ya said its all new but sometimes "new" don't mean much..... more true everyday..

and yep, ya need ta check tha flywheel magnets....

did you try ta run it with any of tha old parts on it???

jus noticed something else.. whats your house water pressure???,, not much leavin' tha prop and exhaust at idle???

Hi Chris,

Not checked the flywheel magnets in fairness, will pull and check that, easy thing to do.
It runs a little better with the new parts (CDI Stator and Trigger)

House water pressure is really high

Interestingly, it clears up a little if you pump the primer bulb, but remains flat / bogging under load. It doesn't bog on the hose with the electric external fuel pump (guess due to higher pressure v mechanical pump)

Just pulled the reeds, all look perfect, seal OK and aren't sticking.

Also pulled and checked the flywheel magnets - all good there.

ya need a spark tester or use your timin' lite ta test for fire on each clyinder off idle..................... or if ya like me i sometimes pull one plug completely out and start tha thing... do all six undividedly... you can wait till dark if ya have trouble seen' any spark from tha plugs.. but i think its 'lectrical.. could be wired wrong?.. could be a bad "new" part???

I think you could be right.. Just been out and tested the coils with an OHM meter. Of the 6x coils, 4 are in spec, the 5th shows very low reading on the meter and the 6th is dead. Will remove the green wires to the coils and re-
test tomorrow to be sure.. I really hope that's the issue, in my head they should all read the same, right?

Just a few tests.----Start motor let it idle.----Remove 1 plug wire at a time.----Post results.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on each lead ?---Mark flywheel for TDC for each cylinder.----Use timing light to check each cylinder at idle.-----At full throttle on the lake look into each bore with a strong flashlight.----Compare fuel amount coming up the nozzles.----Tested crankcase compression ?----Checked exhaust housing for blockage ?
