Re: Mexicans striking

Interesting response, rodbolt, but I was inquiring about your persistent and consistent employment of cynical attack. There are literally countless instances of unintended consequences that arise because of American foreign policy throughout history, some of them very serious. I notice that you like to use them as a club against whatever path of action or leader you would like to destroy (Bush, for now) at a given time. My question to you was, should we sit on our hands and do nothing when there's a perceived threat because there may be unintended consequences?

As far as dealing with the labor issues associated with illegal immigration goes, I agree with much of what you say. I do believe that we, as Americans, have some of our values skewed, and that if/when all the illegals are sent packing, there will have to be a realignment of sorts. And I am sure the marketplace will effectively make that realignment happen. So, if we end up paying thirty cents more for a head of lettuce because we have to pay Americans a fair wage to harvest it, so be it. That just means that we have been enjoying certain artificially cheap goods for too long.

If we're ever going to get our priorities and values to line up sensibly, we're going to have to restore honor to physical labor and brute sweat. It's nice to sit in an air-conditioned office and beat on a keyboard all day long and take home $100,000, but it's time for Blue Collar America to reassert itself. I just want it to happen through the marketplace, not the offices of corrupt politicians and union bosses.

Agreed, the welfare system it continues to perpetuate itself. However, all work is honest, not dirty.

I don't believe for one minute that good ol' fashion economics won't straighten out any shortage of illegal workers. I don't, however, support kicking everybody that is already here, out, as we allowed them in plain and simple.

IMHO, the only long term thing we need to do is vigorously police illegal hiring practices. It's easier than policing the borders and if the economic carrot is ended, so will be the associated influx. Everything else will straighten itself out. We should probably allow guest worker permits for those already here, and the only reason I support that is that we actively lured them here and these are real live people with real live kids etc.

QC. You may want to rewrite or maybe rethink your comments. There is no shortage of illegals.

Techno, you missed my point. Chicken Little's conventional wisdom is that the sky will fall if we don't allow illegal immigrants into the country to do jobs that American's simply won't do. No illegals = shortage of illegals. Sorry for forcing the little leap . . . thinking slightly into the future.

That's because they know what happened to that little dog in the commercials that used to say "Yo quiero Taco Bell!"

Sheetrock and other hard work used be done by folks who were at least to be paid minimum wage.
Enter illegals (not sick birds) who will work for less for people who want to pay less.

Illegals won't complain. It's not that they WANT to stay here and screw up our country like they did theirs, but the pay is better and they won't get shot.

Ship them back. Ok. You pay for it. 11 miilion X $______.

Fine the companies who hire them $40,000 for each illegal that are caught working for them. That will dry up the reason for crossing our boarders.

Prepare to pay. For it is determined that Americans will do those jobs, but will be paid minimum wage and benifits.
