Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help

Thanks Brett.

Does anyone know what was the "standard" set up in 1995 for this particular boat. And Zool you say Volvo Penta, is there a reason IE. you think it fits the keyhole and bolt pattern? Or because it seems to be a quality drive and you have faith I can MIH (Make it Happen). AQ280+-... OK, I don't know what that means? Is that like may I have a Coke please, I just walk into the dealer and say I'll have an AQ280+- please; and they say may I have your black Amex please.

I'll clarify a few things to help with all your suggestions as I have been reading looks like I need to provide more info.

Simple pleasure cruiser a few friends, out on the lake (Lake Mead, whats left of it) for a few hours twice a month.
Trailer'd to and fro; with any of 3 v8 FORDs depending on how many people will be attending.
Stored in my work warehouse after trailer is finished being painted.

My only major concern is to get it up and running to ensure that it's done right the first time. I am leaning toward purchasing another donor RUNNING boat and robbing it of the motor, drive, and other running gear. Then we plan on taking that to the desert and blasting it for the afternoon with .50 cal and some other toys and dropping whats left of it at the dump.

I need to know what I "should" fill the hole with. Its a "project" something for me to waste any number of hours; and sticking to my "budget" +++. If I wanted a new boat I would go buy another brand spanking new Four Winns from the same guy at the same dealer in Henderson, however, that doesn't teach me anything, nor is it much fun for me.

I am planning on doing a wrap of some sort, the interior will be redone, the huge stereo will be dropped in (I like it), custom windscreens over each bump, dual optima batteries, and dual props. These will all be donations or me finally cashing in on favors that are way past due. I will be hands on and installing all these over the course of however long it takes. It took me 3 years to get my F-100 to where its at and it'll never be done and that's OK it runs and drives and gets a bunch of compliments.

For now let's get it running, I need the parts that fill the hole, go vvrroomm, and turn right and left.

Oh and the picture of the bottom showing the glass, what should I do with that?

Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help

The reason I said you need an AQ series VP drive is because during that era, they used the large keyhole size cutout, like you have. Somewhere in the 90's, they phased out the propriety hole size, and standardized to the mercruiser size hole. The best and prolly only safe way to switch to a new VP or Merc outdrive, is to replace the transom, and cut out the hole patern.

The reason Im favorable to the AQseries Volvo drive is that it uses a hypoid gear system, with just an outer shield, eliminating the gimble and alignment issues, among other things. They can also be obtained fairly cheap if you look around. I recently bought an complete AQ280 for spare parts for $300. If the motor/drive package you found, the 4.3, has an AQ drive, and your current transom is sound, its a relatively easy install, so I think you could "make it happen". The AQ drives are equivalent to the bravo Merc drives, as far as durability is concerned.

Ill be reinstalling a pair of aq290 drives back on my boat, they are 25 years old and still fine ;)

Biddirty this is the old boat with the most snow I've ever seen in vegas in 20 years; the other is not a boat, but the parts I started with were also free99.1613_1060516638845_9310_n.jpg2013-12-02 16.02.16.jpg2013-12-02 16.02.16.jpg2013-12-02 16.02.16.jpg

Gotcha Zool, I got confused when you said the 98 motor would not fit. I stopped looking at that setup for that reason, I would like to find the whole kit and caboodle in one swoop. That way I can get it running, which in my ideal world is the only big step.

So now I will continue the search for an AQ, hopefully find it connected to a motor that will drop in as well. I wasn't planning on using the 305 for this project but it is available if need be.

The transom, and rest of the hull "seems" fine other then my small concern with the bottom scrape. I think I will go and take some better photos of the possible donor tomorrow? Another dumb question, and won't be the last... Where, How, would I know if it is an AQ of sorts. Is it stamped somewhere, or what am I looking for? As for the motor fit, I plan on measuring the motor mounts, height, and width.

Also, Am I looking at drilling new mounting holes through the transom with any direction I go? Or is this a common bolt pattern that will butt right up?

00E0E_9fnxZh5xq0T_600x450.jpg, This is an SX VP attached to that 98 4.3 v6 motor in an 87 Winner, so I quit on that one. He sent better pictures of the 79 SR with the 4.3 but the drive was more narrow than my keyhole. I will pursue the Aq280 or bigger. Does bigger mean better, if so how much bigger is better?

Im not looking to clutter up my valuable space if I can't use it on this.

Nope, you don't want it ^^^

Obsolete driveline, parts & service are hard to come by

EDIT: In the wee hours of this morning, the pix were so small, it looked like an OMC Stinger driveline, not a Volvo AQ. Sorry for the error ^^^^

The bolt pattern for the drives you can use are all the same IIRC.

Any drive configuration in this manual will work..look for a motor/drive combo with one of these to use on your current cutout..

Everything you need to work on them is in here...they all use aq series transom shield types, dp stands for duoprop...

280.jpg, testing this to see the size of the picture; it may come out the same. Thanks guys for your posts.

How concerned with age on the unit I am looking for. I imaging when your putting in the 290s, you either rebuilt them or had the rebuilt?

I clicked on the picture itself and 6" by 3"; will it say somewhere on it what it is?

That looks like an aq280, but I cant read the blue plate, it should work on your cutout. The 280 is the lowest I would go, the 270's are really old tech. My 290's don't need rebuilding, but I have to change the lower units on them for the new v8 gear ratio since im going from 4 cyl to 8. basically you need a 161:1 ratio for a v8 single prop, and 1.95:1 for duoprop, VP has the gear changes in the lower unit, not in the trans as with Merc. These drives are really strong and will last a long time if cared for.

The price raises significantly, the higher in the series you go. If you find the whole package from a doner boat, you will have everything you need from pullies to prop.

You would want to drain some oil from any drive you look at, and see if its milky, if so, the seals will need replacing at a minimum.

Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help

The other pics of the motor show its a Volvo red block v6- v8, so for 500 bux, if the package is in decent shape, its a steal. You will have the motor, the drive, and everything in between. I also see it has the exhaust flapper, which was an option on the 280, and standard on the 290's and up. Makes for a nice quiet system.

I went to take some photos today, of the possible donors. They are both 280's and the red block is a 225D, I could not see anything naming the other Volvo penta motor. And now the pictures are failing to upload. Can I email them to you? The other was blue.

The AQ225d is a 305 v8 with 225 hp.....they rated them by hp instead of displacement back then. They were made from the late 70's to late 80's I think. Most were paired with 280's, and some with early 290's.

I guess the blue one is a Ford 302 from early to mid 70's . If Its a Ford, they were limited production, and parts to connect to the drive may be scarce.

Its probably best to post pics here, so its not a dead end thread. Open a free photobucket account and just paste the img code in the text here, you get nice, clear pics in full size.

I still cant really see the other pics, but I kinda like the drive on the blue one, but like the 225d.

You may need the trim guage and pump for either set up too, if you can take them. I don't know whats on your boat currently, if anything.

heres the operators manual for the 225, lots of useful stuff in this if you end up going with that one.

Lets see if that works, the blue one is only a four banger. I've made a tentative deal with the guy; he really just wants them off his property. I am going to cut out the entire blue pulley to prop assembly and set it up on a rolling pallett for him to sell and get rid of the hull. Come back and pick up the other boat with the trailer from the yellow one strip it as well as relocate the aq280 and 225D into the Montura. Then I will dump the other hull, and if the trailer is still in decent shape sell it.
