Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help

Ideally, using the Monterey shifter with the trim/tilt buttons would be good, but im not sure if that's possible, wiring is one of my weak points..I just poke and hope lol. IMO, the best way to see what you can use from the build boat, or need to use from the doner, is to get just the 280 transom shield and drive in place, minus the motor. then you can see what hooks up, and what doesn't, and get the battery system working to test the trim/tilt stuff. The trim guage may not work with the 280 motor/switch, but maybe it can be made to work. Once you get the trim going, you can get the steering adapted...then pull just the drive, set the engine and flywheel cover..then reinstall the drive.

The engine harness basically just has to feed the gauges, ignition, ect..Im sure you could rig the wiring, or replace the plug with a matching male/female setup, and run new wires...

For the gas tank, when you pull it, post some pics and check for severe corrosion. If its not too bad, just go to HD and get some Xylene and pour it in, let each side and bottom soak for an our or so, the flip to another position. I did that on mine and the inside looks new now..plus the xylene will just flash off, not leaving any water inside. There are usually bulkheads on the bottom of the tank, and it inhibits getting all the liquid out.

This is all after you check for rot....post the pics after you drill.

good luck, weve all been there! :)

PS, the original drive on your boat was most likely one of the DP drives....you know, the expensive ones lol...your budget would not have allowed replacing the year specific drivetrain...not even close.

Alrighty then, I will anxiously await your response. She is not a blond, more of a red-head, but certainly not a dark haired girl. Now for the ultra bad. I put one through the bottom, what do I do with that? Will that filler do the job there or did I really jack myself here. OR, is the redheaded shavings enough to spoil the fun?

It looks like I drilled a piece of redwood. The pictures suck, but it is not dry, nor blond. Did I just FINISH this project and move on; or does rot come in levels? Blond = perfect, redwood = degree of rot but workable, dark and wet = give it away and that is the reason I now have it?

Well, you're certainly not the 1st to poke a hole in the hull, was it the bottom of the hull, or the bottom of the back of the transom?....regardless, its an easy fix with some resin or compound.

Dry and red is fine, wet and red could be an issue...I would clean off all that grime on the keyhole, and poke around, that's how I found out my transom was rotted, one small black mark led to a 2 sq foot rotted area. If youre confident you checked it all out, seal the holes.

You might want to check out the motor mount location on the doner, and match it to whats there now....you may have to glass in new mount pads, or move the bolts on the existing pads...

Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help

I'll have to do the ultra cleaning on the hull over the weekend. My helper isn't as much help as I figured on, but that's ok. That is him in the picture of the donor cut out. I'll finish preparing and installing the trailer boards, and tackle the darn drive and motor separation that I have been dreading. I have a hard time on seeing how those pins come out. Are they just big phillips screws? I unscrew the allens, remove the attached bellows, and the two things inside the cover. After the pins are out it falls in my lap?
The hole is on the bottom of the hull, that I now have to fix, while the cleaning is happening I will be digging for rot also. When photobucket catches up I will put up some more pictures.

.

First you should remove cone and prop, and line cutter (if it has one) off the prop shaft. You don't want to damage the prop $$

I drain the oil after removing the dip stick

Open the rear plate cover and disconnect the shift cable stuff.

The steering helmet has to be pushed up and out of the way. There is a round cam thing in the helmet, that has two bolts. You remove the 2 bolts, then in the other set of holes, if threaded, you can use (2) grade 8 1/4-20 bolts, and tighten them intermittently to lift out the cam. If the second set of holes are not threaded, you need to use a big pair of needle nose pliers to wiggle it out..heat helps here.

Thne slide the helmet up out of the way

You need to support the drive, either with a block of wood under the sleg, or make a cradle.

After removing the hinge pin bolts, you can use a brass or aluminum drift punch (not steel!..it will expand the pins and seize them in), and punch them in....heat may be needed again, on the housing, not the pins.

If youre lucky, it will fall in your lap, if not, u gotta wrestle it back..its just connected with a splined sleave.

I think that's everything lol.....your drive don't look corroded like mine were, so it might not be too bad...a lot of ppl pull the drive every season and store it.

Windshield.jpg
Picked up a windshield tonight for 100 bucks, it is from a 1991 17ft bayliner br. I'm not sure how well it will fit; but I do think I can MIH at least close enough for 100 bucks, it is missing the glass in the middle frame but when I go get the Xylene at HD, I will have measured and fit it well enough. If needed I may have them cut it a bit wider to make up any different and figure out the frame at that point.

HAHA, no wonder those other pictures sucked so bad, they were the wrong ones! Photobucket and I are now getting along much better, so here are some more progress shots for the critique.

Top is what I have to work with on the build, it would be the port side rear, bottom is starboard rear.

The trailer pictures are still downloading, your not missing much there but I will post when complete.
I did have to drill out the bottom screw on the 280 plate, and the pins are not out yet planning on using a narrow screwdriver backwards using the plastic end. I'll know Friday how that works out. Getting closer to the next step, and then the next step, and so forth, and so on. Thanks guys

OK, sorry guys I have to beat a dead horse right now. The HINGE PINS, punch them "IN" towards the bellows? So they come out with the drive then... I did take care of everything else, but I broke my t-handle allen wrench on the top steering cam, one more bolt on top to get out. Im close though. AND the bearing inside the flywheel; your term was "redo"; ya mean pull it, give a couple spins to ensure its all there, grease it up and put it back. Or pull it and replace it.

In the top pic is your blower motor. It should have a hose and be mounted somewhere it won't get wet.[/QUOTE]

It is actually just laying there, I haven't really started to do anything in the actual build. It needs to be thoroughly cleaned which I haven't done yet. Just been gathering parts, and things, trying to make sure we are going in the right direction before starting down the path.

However, I did try our purchased windshield today on the build boat; NOT even close!! I will make it work though; you all can throw me ideas on this to help out.

The trailer boards were on the list today and turned out pretty good. I used tension nuts under the "carpet" and just punched a hole on the bottom side for the bolt. Geez, I need to get a pneumatic stapler for sure!

Oh yeah, one other thing. As you see to the right of the front windshield photo lots of screw holes and I have read here about Marine Tex to fill smaller holes and such. Thoughts, photos, any other choices; the build boat had a wake tower on it that was installed poorly. Will it work for that type of application?

Spin the helmet, and punch in....the special tool lets u pull them out..or a rigged slidehammer

I got a comprehensive link on the pds bearings, but I gotta find it. BBL

Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help

Well, here is the results of the first cleaning. Came out pretty good, 3 hours of scrubbing the outside and inside. The tank pulled out easy, other then the gas filler hose. I cut it. The inside fiberglass paint has that terrible "splash paint" that will be getting a fresh coat of off white because that's what I want. The engine and under the tank were filled with grime and dirt; but cleaned up well in my opinion. But here it is let me know what you think.

Here are a couple more. It was hit by 3 paintballs on the port side, also had about 20ish good size areas of tree sap on the starboard side. After taking out the tank I realized the ski locker drain was plugged with dirt but that was easily rectified. Lots of scrapes, and quite a few chips that I had not seen until I got through the grime. I used graffiti remover and a bunch of rags to get through it, then washed with lots of soapy water and power washed after all that. There is still another round of cleaning to come but we came a long way today. What do you guys use to super wash? What do you use after a season in the water when It really needs cleaning. Any chemicals to use on the tank area and motor area?

let me know what you think guys

Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help

Oh and the gas tank itself was real dirty, but a quick blast with the pressure washer cleaned right up. I did not blast the top side that has the float opening. I am considering taking it somewhere to have it professionally cleaned; Anyone have ideas on what that costs?

You can just use some acetone, or left over zylene to clean the bilge and tank area...since youre gonna paint those areas, you will need to dewax/degrease them anyway..

You can see if there is a radiator shop near you, then can clean that aluminum tank, and maybe pressure test it for u too...or just tackle it yourself..

I really like the job you are doing and you were very resourceful in finding the outdrive and engine. This may seem odd to ask, but I didn't see this in your posts. What year and size is the boat?

I used chemtol B12 to clean the inside of my gas tank and it worked very well. My tank was plastic though.

As for your windshield, are you going to try to make the one that you bought work or are you going to keep looking for the perfect fit? Earlier in the thread you'd mentioned something about a windscreen... what was that idea? I'm only asking because I have a very similar project going on with a 1997 Sea Ray 175 (I have a thread on it here), and I will need a new windshield also.
