Re: Monterey Montura Newbie - need help
Ideally, using the Monterey shifter with the trim/tilt buttons would be good, but im not sure if that's possible, wiring is one of my weak points..I just poke and hope lol. IMO, the best way to see what you can use from the build boat, or need to use from the doner, is to get just the 280 transom shield and drive in place, minus the motor. then you can see what hooks up, and what doesn't, and get the battery system working to test the trim/tilt stuff. The trim guage may not work with the 280 motor/switch, but maybe it can be made to work. Once you get the trim going, you can get the steering adapted...then pull just the drive, set the engine and flywheel cover..then reinstall the drive.
The engine harness basically just has to feed the gauges, ignition, ect..Im sure you could rig the wiring, or replace the plug with a matching male/female setup, and run new wires...
For the gas tank, when you pull it, post some pics and check for severe corrosion. If its not too bad, just go to HD and get some Xylene and pour it in, let each side and bottom soak for an our or so, the flip to another position. I did that on mine and the inside looks new now..plus the xylene will just flash off, not leaving any water inside. There are usually bulkheads on the bottom of the tank, and it inhibits getting all the liquid out.
This is all after you check for rot....post the pics after you drill.
good luck, weve all been there!
PS, the original drive on your boat was most likely one of the DP drives....you know, the expensive ones lol...your budget would not have allowed replacing the year specific drivetrain...not even close.
