I have always heard there is a huge difference between a boat engine and a car engine. But what is the difference??? When I bought my first boat 12 years ago it had a blown motor and I just threw in a 350 out of my buddys nova and used it for many trouble free years, I do know there are difference's in cams and ignition systems but what else, maybe something with the block or????? Im not working on a boat now I just always wondered if this was dealer hype or what???

Dealer hype.... internet hype.... myth hype... forum hype... the list is long. ;)

The basic long block is the same. The cam I am sure is a marine grind - or maybe even simply a truck grind. The core plugs should be brass and the head gasket should be either stainless steel or a composite material.

All of the externals - starter, alt, ignition, carb, etc are marine. But the block and internals are the same. (In spite of what you read about forged this or that. )

Re: motor ????

Ayuh,... Generally speakin', or more specfically, the SBC...
Mark is absolutely Right...

The SBCs We run in our boats most closely resemble the build used in the Chevy/ GMC pickup trucks, of whatever vintage you wanta talk about....
Cams, heads, cranks, pistons, All the hard parts are plain ole Chevy pickup stuff...

Most of the uninformed, get confused with the hard parts used in Hot Rod Rocketships, rather than the run of the mill motors We're always talkin' about here at iboats...
'n of course, when yer talkin' Hot Rods, it don't matter whether it's a boat or a car, All motor hard part bets are Off...

Re: motor ????

Having been inside my fair share of "marine" engines, I can attest that there is very little special about them inside. Stock crank, rods, pistons, complete heads including valve springs, oil pump. Cam is different, but marginally so.

Why,..?? The pipe plugs are about as thick as the head castings...

Some do, some don't,... Not a Marine thing at all...

I support your information. It is correct.
