I agree Starman but you don't build a house on a shakey foundation. I'd hate to see him get this thing all built just to have it split.

I think the damage is repairable,,, BUT...

I'd hate to see him get this thing all built just to have it split.

I think it would be a questionable repair. After the boat is all buttoned up, it would be too difficult to work on the repair again,,, if it developed problems in the future. If this were a completely rigged boat only requiring the hull repair, it might be worth the effort.

Sorry to see that your project isn't going your way. I hate to see a classic Lund go to heaven. At risk of acting like a vulture, if you do decide to scrap the boat, I would like to buy the windshield assembly, if you would be willing to ship it. Let me know, I am very serious.

Keep your head up and eyes open, there are a lot of great boats out there stashed away, you'll find one.

Have sschefer take a look at it if you have the time. If it can or can't be repaired I'd go with his opinion. Worst case you've found someone who really knows how to weld :)

The windshield is in great shape. I will keep you in mind when I make my decision motorpsykle. As usual, I have some life issues to deal with first, so it's going to be a couple months before I get there.

Yeah, when the time comes. His opinion is well regarded. Fortunate for me, he's willing and not too far away.

As an aircraft mechanic, and have some experience repairing sheet metal. From what I see in the pictures, I think everything is repairable. I think the appropriate and safest way to repair everything would be to stop-drill all the cracks, and add a patch using solid rivets, not the pop-type rivets. The patch should match the contour of the surface being repaired, and be sure to use sealant under the patch, and on each rivet when installing. I would avoid any welding, as someone mentioned earlier, the heat can weaken the heat treating and cause cracking. I realize you may not have sheet metal skills, or tools, but maybe you can find someone who does? Too bad I don't live closer. I enjoy projects like this, and would like to help. Here is a website with some general info.

GonzoJ and thiker15, thanks for the interest and the ray of hope (excellent links). Much consideration will be taken for the next step. Unfortunately it will be awhile (life is getting in the way again). I waited this long, so.......

I found this quote on an olde forum:

"My buddy says his 18.5' Tyee is Welded on the inside and of course rivited on the exterior."

Call LUND and ask them if the centerline interior weld was factory done!

pscbowhunt, thanks for the shot of inspiration. I think I just saw the needle on my "motivation meter" move a little bit.

Re: My Big Tyee 5.3 Slowww Simmered Resto'

you are welcome buddy boy you should floorboard that motivation when we fixed a kenworth frame we called it fishplateing the frame same thing here the weld did not break cause of it being welded it broke from being hit by something lund would not weld the hull if it weakened the aluminum and thats the first step in building the boat the bottom two parts are put in a jig and welded then the ribs then the top part and the rest of the supports now first clean the aluminum the area to be fishplated myself i would do the hull first inside only 1st clean 2ond jb weld the broken weld in several layers cut and bend aluminum fishplate to fit over weld several inches past the brake use good silicone sealer drill and bolt four places towards the center of plate the drill and rivit the rest prolly two and a half inches apart replace bolts with rivits hull is now fixed step two stop drill all the cracks in the other parts the ribs drill bout three fourths of an inch from the end and rivit back to hull then fishplate all other cracks pop rivit plates on replace any rivits broken that go through the hull almost dun buddy boy since you got it stripped out put the boat in the water dont fill it put in water check for any leaks have a sharpy pen handy mark any other leaks them rivits all over the boat is a potential leek and marine pop rivits and silicone work real good used them alot repore the foam or gloveit first and use poor in foam only only i dont know your skill level with this kinda stuff it must be pretty good to get this far metal work should take bout six hours put a 150 hp motor on that puppy and start havin fun in the sun on the water buddy boy we have a 120 hp on ours and i would like a bigger motor we fish fort peck in montana alot we got caught in 5 to 6 ft waves 4 miles from where we put in and made it o my god what a ride what a boat got it cheap fixed it just fix it or bring it to me i will fix it for free if u bring i will fix easy easy peasy jer in montana

Re: My Big Tyee 5.3 Slowww Simmered Resto'

Do you want to bring that thing by and let me take a look at it? This weekend is out. I have to go pick up my new boat the following Saturday. Sunday the 15th might work. I think I have enough 3/16 5052 Aluminum to make you up a plate if you want to go that route. I checked with Lund a while back and the bottoms are 6061 so you only get one shot at welding it and that's already been done. They went to a 1 piece bottom after they realized that the weld was causing a 50% reduction in strength at the weld. That's what happens when you try to weld 6061 Aluminum that's as thin as that. Clearly the engineers were trying to cheat the devil by using standard width sheet stock and welding it.

The good news is, and I hope this is encouraging, if you can get that crack fixed you have one helluva boat. I know you have a family to think of first but if I were you, I'd take it up to Phil Taylor at Jetstream Concepts in Yuba City and let him fix you up. You might get out of there for around a 1,000.00 and you'll never have to worry about it again. If you remember, he's the one that did the patch you saw on my MonArk. I slammed some big waves really hard with it and it never even whimpered.

sschefer, thanks again. The 15th works for me if it's still good for you. I'll be sending you a PM with some contact info.

I never forgot about the shop that fixed your boat. Maybe I might save a little money since the boat is stripped to bare bones.

I just found out I have a babtismal to go to on the 15th. Man, my weekends are getting ate up lately.

Stripped down is the best way to take it to them for sure. Let me know.

sschefer, too bad I didn't get your earlier offer in time. When and if you ever have the time to check out the boat, I will try my best to match it. Nobody understands time constraints like I do, so if it's not doable, no problem. Do you feel I should take it straight to Jetstream or would I benefit from having you take a look first?

Re: My Big Tyee 5.3 Slowww Simmered Resto'

Phil Taylor has seen a lot more of this problem than any of us here have. I would give him a call and talk to him.

Concepts 530.742.5752

The website is www.jetstreamconcepts.com They aren't associated with Jetstream boats, that's Harbercraft.

It's Phil and Maggie Taylor.
