Just purchased a 1972 Terry bass boat with trolling motor, trailer and 1976 55 HP Johnson for $800. I am the third owner, the guy that I purchased it from bought it from the original owner but never put it in the water. the original owner passed away in his 80's and the boat sat for five years before the second owner bought it. Ran a compression check on the motor and got 135 psi in the top cylinder and 130 psi in the bottom! I am stoked! I am going to replace water pump for piece of mind, clean carb and go give her some time on the water...she is all original...seats, carpet and all.

Good for you, looks like a nice boat. Them motors are work horses, and very reliable. Good idea to change the water pump, after five years, it may pump water, but they should be changed every two years. I would change the LU lube too. Its cheap insurance on your new boat.

Happy boating!!!

Is it stick steering? Anyhow... Awesome score for 800 bones.. Johnson outboards are as tough as nails..

Yeap, its a Bell...the guy I bought it from is a helicopter pilot and I am an airport manager! That wasn't a planned thing at all, Ha!

Re: My new to me boat!

Having trouble figureing out the year of this motor....serial and model on the bracket at the transom says its a 1972 but the paint scheme for that year does not match this motor...the paint scheme seems to be a 1976. I am thinking two things may have happened. Either the motor mount is a 1972 and the motor is actually a 1976 or it is indeed a 1972 motor but has a 1976 motor cover for some reason? Just had another thought...I don't think Johnson made a 55 in 1972 so this might be a 50 HP motor?

Maybe he broke the cover.. Real easy to see if its a 72... It will be elecrtic shift.. There will not be a shift rod and it will have wires instead

Re: My new to me boat!

I would say the numbers on the bracket are correct then.. Nothing wrong with the electric shift as long as it is working... You have to use special gear lube.. So if you start changing fluids make sure you get the correct stuff...

What type of fluid do I need for the lower unit?

Congrats on the new toy!

It hasn't been put in the water in five years...gonna change the water pump and clean the carb and get her in the water. I am tickled about the compression being 135 / 130

Those carbs are easy.. You should have no problem..

Order the manual when you order the water pump... It's got a different process to messing with cause it is electric shift and the manual will help ya.. I never had the correct one, but wish I did many times.

I used a string to pull my wires though the boot at the top..
