Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

Gotcha, in looking closer at the plans I noticed someone else might have had the same issues. There are some penciled in dimensions. Can you tell whether this boat is symmetrical front and back? It looks like it is to me because the same frames are used front and back and spaced the same. You might need to put a straight edge on the plan and measure in scale from each frame to the straight line and then fair your own curve. Use the same curve for the keel on the outside of course.

It looks like a straight line from frames 3-4 4-4 4-3 in the center and curved somewhere after 3 to the ends right?

Now I'm bothered! :D I think I'll print a copy of this plan and try to work it out tomorrow evening, just because :)

canoes and kayaks seem to be a lot more work than the minimax was... need a simple bullet proof plan for one to build fast for wife so she has a toy to play with when I'm out testing my fun stuff. :D

CK,
It does look like it starts the curve after frame 3.I saw those measurements on the right side.I think that I can work out what the curve needs to be, but I will have to put pencil to wood.I cant just read prints and do it.I have to put my hands on it.And it is a little more complex than a minimax.Heck, i hear that there are some rednecks that can throw those together in a week or so! :D

It's gonna take a week to get this keelson worked out :D

There is a trick for fairing even curves using two sticks two nails and a pencil, have you seen it?

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

I believe that I have. The other question is :in between the #4 and #3 frame on the stem side, I have a measurement of 2 1/4".Is that from the bottom of the keelson to the bottom of the frame, or is that from the bottom of the keelson to the bottom if you will of the notch? The bad part is that you have to have the keelson to star the dang thing. If you read the plans it calls for you to see the detailed drawing on how to attach the frames to the strong back.Well, that "detailed plan " isnt there. But if you have ythe keelson correct, you can just fix the frames to it then fix them to the strongback.Ill be out for awhile in the shop trying to work it out.Ill check back after while.

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

Allright Cap'n PJs, I've racked my brain looking over these diagrams and found a possible solution to the missing keelson drawing:

On page 27 upper left, there is a datum line that corresponds to that on the strongback. The frames are laid out on the drawing as they relate to the datum on the strongback and there are measurements from the datum to points on the notches on the frames for keelson and chine strips. In other words, the detailed plan for fixing frames to strongback IS there it just hides in the frames drawing.

The top (inside) of the keelson does not appear to be faired at all, rather it is made up of four straight lines. At the stem and stern from the ends of the keelson to frames 1 looks to be the horizontal top of your 5,3/4 keelson stock. From frames 1 to frames 3 is a diagonal straight cut, and the center section from frame 3 to 3 is another horizontal straight cut.

The frames as you know are notched 1,1/2" deep for the keelson which works out fine in the center section where the keelson is obviously 2,1/4" top to bottom which when set in the 1,1/2" notches and planked with 1/4" plywood would leave you a 1/2" keel exposed below the frames. (This gets beveled before planking to be flush with the frame bottoms and will come to a point in the center.) At frames 2 and 1 however the keelson is notched also in order to be as thick as it is and reveal the same keel after assembling to the frames. These notches need to be deep enough to leave 2,1/4" of material like the center section. That part looks like minor trial and error.

In order to find the outside curve of the keelson you will need to use the differences between the frame bottoms to datum measurements, mark these points on your keelson stock and fair the curve.

...at least that's what my brain is telling me...

IMO this boat is way overbuilt. The keelson could probably be reduced by half its vertical thickness and be plenty strong, the fore and aft ends especially, unless it will be used for shooting the rapids at Niagra Falls. You see the expression on the paddler's face in the picture? That's cause he's got that big keelson riding up his butt! And the frames are probably burly enough to stretch the boat to 20' or more with the same number of frames. But I still like it :D

The number of frames is the reason I shyed away from that one... looks very over engineered but, I'm guessing if you follow the plans and seal everything good and water tight, you'll have a yak that will last forever.... Built very tough.

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

Thanks, I had a moment there, otherwise I just stared at the plans for a long time, tried to build it in my head.

Last Summer my wife and I went on a canoe camping trip on the WI River which has many back channels and sloughs. I thought it would be smart to take one of these channels rather than the main one in order to avoid boat traffic where the river opens into Lake WI. The water was low and we ended up dragging, pushing portaging our canoe and gear for most of the day through several miles of inches deep slack water and mud and sand bars. Yuck.

Caught a real nice Pike on that trip though :)

right on... can we see your plywood? :D I for one am personally starting to believe that this yak is going to remain your dream.

You could even draw some lines on it and it would help me believe that it may materialize one day. :D m!m j/k
