Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Hey Jon,
I gotta agree with one of the previous suggestions of mounting the fuel tank in the bow area, and you can fab up a couple of battery trays in the back, and cover them up with a minimalist splashwell...you will still have room left in nooks and crannies for all of you safety gear and necessities, however, like you said, a 13 foot boat doesn't leave a lot of room to spare...

This is an extreme idea, and you are welcome to hit me over the head if it is too hairbrained, but have you thought of just eliminating or even making the rear facing seats removable...put em in when you are going with the full crew, leave em out for a two person excursion...

Finally, one more thought...the lack of space when the seats are laid flat, is really not that big a deal, since, if and when you need access to the rear compartment, you just fold them up...???

Again, just thinking out loud, and Yes, I know, it usually gets me in trouble...

Have fun figuring out this puzzle...something will come to ya...I'll be watching and waiting to see what the final plan is...

Regards,
GT

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I got IT!!! Get two inner tubes, Stretch some webbing on em and put the battery on one and the tank on the other tie em together with some rope and tow em behind the boat! Course Launching could be a problem.:rolleyes::redface:

What about some Harley leather soft sided saddle bags???? Just hang 1 off each side at the stern. Keeps the wires & hoses short.!?!?:)

And just bring 'em in to trailer it.......Maybe hard sided saddle bags painted to match.....

Ok, I'm done, gonna go put the raccoon away & I'll get back to you as agreed previously.... If WOG is getting in on the shenanigans, it's official: what they say about the lowest common denominator bringing the average down:facepalm: has occured:D

I did think about seperating the seats and have the front the way they are and turn the back ones around and mount them up against the transom with a small splashwell like Woody has and store the batt and fuel under the seats. Just one option I am considering.

The saddlebags and the inner tubes had me laughing my a** off ... thanks.

Yep,

We'll get 1 of the guys out west to grab ya some abandoned belly tanks from 2 decommissioned P-51 Mustangs & mount the gas outbound side saddle style too. How much weight do two 165 gallon fuel cells add? What's your range w 320+ gals of fuel anyway? @ 10ft, just to the bottom of the lake at the end of the boat ramp or your trailer, whichever is shorter?

Makes yours look kinda like mine:

Boy you guys got some real issue's where do you all come up with this stuff! Been sniffin to much acetone? Well keep sniffen cuss it
keeps me in a good mood!:D
Now back to the problem. If you install the fuel tank in the bow do you think there would be to much fuel smell?
How about have someone fab a skinny tank to fit in the gunnel and put battery in the other gunnel. It looks pretty wide.
Maybe build small cab to cover .

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Fuel smell? Only if you spill it whilst filling. I may be wrong, but if you mount a 'permanent' tank you need to have an overflow 'vent' line to somewhere above the waterline, but below the rubrail out the side of the hull. If you are referring to having to open the portable tank vent on a non-pressured (NOT a 2-line johnson) fuel system, I suppose that located up front under the bow cap, there might be a little more chance of smelling the fuel under way from the vent, then the same set-up behind you in/under a splashwell. But that vent is designed to let air INTO the tank, so there's no vacuum starving the motor of fuel. Depends on permanent vs portable. There are some costs involved w/ long fuel & battery cable runs. This helped me make what is most likely to be my gas NOT under the bow decision.

In my case, I have entertained thoughts of putting a permanent tank in the bow, and have neither decided yes or no yet. I'd prefer the capacity of a 12-18 gal tank up front, for weight distribution, but am not thrilled w/ my options for a fill location. I know that I don't want to be going back to the original layout up under the bow anyway. I may go permanent under the splashwell. The fill location won't bother me nearly as much back there somewhere.

I have seen quite a few used tanks pop up on CL lately, quite a few were vertical gunnel tanks. You might score a great deal that way or a good enough deal to afford to have it slightly changed & re-welded (JDA had some changes done & welded on his tank) to better fit your needs. There are aftermarket tanks designed to be vertically under the gunnel, it comes down to space between inner & outer gunnels (I have @ 3.5-4") and how quickly the sides of the hull turns inward to meet the actual bottom of the hull. I probably don't have a vertical 18" before my tank would have to start tapering:
Tank.jpg
To get much capacity it would have to be fairly long because it's so narrow and not really that tall over all ..........

I found that I find it easier to put all that I 'want' in/on/with my rehab project into a box of sorts & shake it up. Then take out a piece and see how this fits w/ what I can afford, do myself, even possible, etc and do that time after time after time until I can finally piece it together so that I can do it, afford it, it makes sense to me, run it by the guys here........

I have pretty much decided that although I'd like a bow tank, it makes more sense for me to get a splashwell permanent tank and put the battery up front or under the front passenger seat (that might save me 4.5ft of battery cable run to the motor & be only slightly longer then all the way up in the bow to the helm).

rookie paint mockup, but I'm not sure why it's a problem but it seems that there is plenty of room for a battery & fuel under a 12" splashwell. W/ a door setup of some sort, maybe make bypass doors that slide in front of a fixed center section:

JB,
That could be a good ideal as long as you can keep the fumes completely away from the battery.
Other wise he won't need to worry about the space it will be endless when the vapors explodes and theres no transom.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

My version of paint doesn't include the optional door louver paint brush for the doors. I may have neglected to mention the louvers in my post above.....Nice teak louvered doors would look good! And I'd suggest a battery box too. Not just a battery on the floor as 'shown' in prior rudimentary paint drawings.

And if you have fuel fumes from a permanently installed, exterior hull vented, outboard fuel system, yeah yous gots problems.... That all end in a boom. Not such a great day boating.

Different then an I/O system & needing a bilge vent/exhaust prior to starting. But yes venting wouldn't be bad.....

Portable or permanent tanks were covered in a lengthy post earlier too....... As was a 'closed' 2line Johnson system, vs an 'open' tank vent system for a Merc (portable fuel tank has a little vent cap like my lawnmower's gas can, to prevent starving the motor of fuel)

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Decker brings up a good point that I have not considered ..... fumes. I intend on using a 6 gal portable tank with a vented cap. I am not sure how much fumes would be coming out of the vent but I would rather not have it in the bow. I think I would be better off to not have a confined area for the fuel and batt but just open the way the boat was originally.

Yep, you've got the puzzle pieces out of the box & fitting together to fit your vision........

Thanks for letting me tag along:D Sometimes it feels more like the barrel of monkeys w/ no pieces that fit w/ any others......

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

jb ..... thanks for the help. I love hearing all the different suggestions and ideas. I have some new ideas that I am now pondering that came out of all this brain storming.

Thanks to all for your input and ideas and I know it won't be long before I'll be turning to all of you for suggestions on another hurdle.

I am still laughing over the inner tubes and saddlebags ..... lol.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Decker: Nope, not at all. If it seemed that way, my bad. I just was afraid that I hadn't been clear. So I went back & edited some of my earlier posts.

I like that we throw all this stuff out there & he who pays for the rehab gets to pick what sticks & what to throw out! :D Maybe a little of this & a little of that..... Especially w/ the less then common builds like Jon's AL ribbed 'glass hull. I bet he got tired of saying: 'Yes it IS a 'glass hull' back at the beginning.... Hopefully we can all bring a little something to the BBQ & all get to enjoy it when it comes together & pays off....

Do a search for raccoon at the forum home page & you'll see I tend toward harsh sarcastic wit (or poor taste, depending on your liking). Jon has gotten some of my better, more helpful work. No mucking around on his thread yet.... But it may be coming soon...

Ya'll have a great end to the week......

Hey jb ..... I started second guessing myself about the fiberglass hull in the beginning. I knew for sure when itching started.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Started tinkering around with the boat not really doing anything special and when I was done ...... the steering was installed. I wasn't really planning to do that but it just happened. Went in fairly easy ..... had to drill 3 new holes for the mounting bracket for the helm and then just bolted everything together.
