Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I have to call this guy tomorrow and see if my motor is done. The last time that I had talked to him he said that he replaced the impeller and just has to tank test it. I hope that I can get it back and switched over to the boat so that I can take it out and see how well it works before the season is completely over.

Here she is .... Finally:

Harness is in good shape .... electric choke working properly, key switch working properly, new impeller, cleaned up and winterized. I am going to try this weekend to get it mounted and then put the boat away till next year. I know .... I know ... there is still time to take her out and have some fun but I am afraid my schedule won't allow it this year.

Jon, I'm so pleased you were able to locate a motor. Now your project will be totally complete and she'll be a pleasure to enjoy next season. Have you given any consideration to a name yet??

I think it will push her enough for 4 squirrels water skiing and 1 squirrel tubing.

I am just thinking that this motor is a bit heavier than the Merc and I am wondering if I have add too much weight. I added the sole, the cabinet under the bow, the seats and the carpeting that were not there from the factory and is all extra weight. I see boats at the lake with 9.9's on them and they are moving along great. Any thoughts?

You're not talking about a change from a 20lb motor to a 150lb motor....

Eat a light lunch & take her for a spin ;)

And would be a good excuse to not wait until next year to get her out one more time. :D

Glad to see the motor finally made it home, now just to a proper place to hang out.

Hey Jon,
If you are concerned about the weight, throw the motor on and take it down to the ramp and float it and see how she sits ( Don't forget the drain plug :) ) . Then tie her up and jump on yourself and see how she does. Maybe have someone else along that can take some pics from a side view a little bit away to get the full perspective?

I don't think you will have a problem with the weight but I am far from an expert...

Hey Jon, do you think sometime in the future, like maybe next year you could mail me a template of your windshield? My boat didnt come with one:( I just got done fileting my keel, tomorrow i'm going to touch it up and sand it. I used a piece of maple, it should be pretty good. I have a question, when you fiberglass something as large as the keel, can you do a little bit at a time? I can't imagine being able to wet out a piece of glass going the whole way... It always ends up kicking off too fast on me. Like can i do a few feet, then go mix more resin and then come back?

Thanks Woody ..... as soon as I am able to get it mounted and tested then my project will be complete. Sure is a good feeling. The Mrs. named the boat " The Min-o ". I have it painted on the stern ..... I will have to post a photo.

Hey jb ..... I guess your right. Didn't look at it that way. Thanks.

Thanks for dropping in TDF ........ I would love to take her out one more time but just kind of crazy this time of the year and besides the motor is all oiled up and put to sleep so I would have to do that all over again.

Hey fst ...... that just may be an option for me. Thanks for the idea.

Hey Boat ...... I have to see if I still have that template. It took a good beating when I taped it to the Lexan. Do you have a frame for the windshield? That was not an easy task getting that new lexan to take the shape of the old windshield. It helped that I had the frame to force it into.

Some stuff I put in storage as I finished with them and some stuff I just tossed thinking I would never need it again. If I have the template then I would be more then happy to send it to you. The best way to do your keel is to have an extra set of hands to mix a second patch of resin as you are running low. I didn't have the option of a second person so I had all of the cloth pre-cut and layed out on the hull ready to go and I worked early in the morning so it was cooler and didn't kick as fast. I mixed enough resin for one layer.

Thanks GT .... it's not the patience but the lack of time. As Woody would say ...... "Life is getting in the way".

Maybe we ought to ask the Admiral if someone hasn't been making clandestine late night trips to the garage for some sitting in the boat & making motor boat sounds.

Probably watching the 1st 10-15 seconds of the old Miami Vice promo:
