Happy 4th to you too Jon!

Good luck on getting it changed but if all else fails I still think you'll be really surprised by the difference you'll get out of just going to a 20. From there possibly some fine tuning and then nothing but :D.

Hey Jon Sob, I have the exact same boat as you do! When you replaced your transom did you remove the inner transom skin?

Hi Boatgoat ..... Yes I did remove the inner skin and I removed the ends of the cap instead of the whole thing.

Here is where I removed the inner skin of the transom and found mush instead of wood:

Not sure how your cap is at the transom but here is how I cut the cap at the ends:

This is how my cap ended at the transom:

It was a fun little project with some unexpected surprises but it was worth all of the work. Feel free to ask any questions that you might have. I am no expert but I will be glad to help as much as I can.

I may be wrong but looks to be a Manta Ray, possibly built in FL. W/ a Buick & the OMC white leg of death, parts will be difficult to source. Nice touch of color on the lower unit:). I think it's a perfect complimentary shade of light blue/teal to yours. Sort of like the Arnold/Danny Twins movie kind of thing. Or maybe we could ship it overland to SP in FL, and let it go back to mama....He's almost done the the MFG & will need something to keep him busy this fall/winter....

I see your cool funky & raise you cool, funky Tin:

But the Admiral thanks you for pointing out an interesting, unique & intriguing project boat..... She has now marked you on the official radar. Be aware, the preferred modis operendi is a sneak attack. With overwhelming suppressing fire. Quick & dirty:D

I think you are right ...... it should go to SP 'cause he will be ready for something to do by fall. I hope that the Admiral will be informed that this should go to Fla. and not over the border to you so I can be taken off the list.

Ummmm As much as i would love to take on such a project the multi -boat pole barn is not yet built..And seeing as though the Admiral wants her parking space back and her outdoor kitchen finally finished a new project is kinda out of the question . And if I get the urge to do some major glassing I can always convert the donor Legend into a CC fishing rig ..

Once on the list, you're never really off the list:) Just set to the side, still very close at hand.....

I have received specialized re-training, so I know. Plus, I'm about due for a refresher:facepalm:

I don't know about you but I hope that I don't get the "urge to do some major glassing" for a long time ...... I've had my fill for a while.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I'm Starting back up on that Project of mine, I got all the tools and safety stuff. Now I just need to figure my material list. I'm getting 5. Gallons of poly resin since I'm going to have to replace the keel. How many yards of 1708 and csm did you need?(I'm horrible at estimating) Like 10 yards? I'm still doing some research, I gotta figure out how much cabosil and chopped strand I need. If you can give me advice I will take every last bit of it. Tomorrow I'm going to. Begin cutting out the top part and inner skin. Sorry about my briefness for I am using a cell phonne to write this

Hey Boat ..... I am glad to hear that you are going to bring another MFG back to life. I think I used about 5 gal of resin and a little less then 5 yds of both CSM and 1708. I ordered a 1# tub of 1/4" chopped strand and 2 1/2 qt of cabosil. I have a little less then half of both left. I used 2" chip brushes from Harbor Freight to wet out the cloth for tabbing in the transom and they came in handy throughout the project.

Remember to get a good bond you have to sand down to raw glass and always put down CSM first before the 1708. Have some Acetone handy to wipe down the area to make sure it is clean before you put down any glass. I am not an expert on glassing but these are things that I was told during my project.

I tried to post a lot of photos for each step thru my project so look back thru my thread and you should find advise for repairing the transom and the keel. I am more then happy to help you as much as I can so ask plenty of questions. There are a lot of great guys here on iboats that jump right in and help so don't hesitate to ask.

Jon has definitely gained the knowledge and experience necessary to be an excellent mentor for you on your upcoming project...

My only inputs at this time is to read and read some more through various threads and keep making progress, no matter how small or insignificant it seems to be at the time...it all adds up...

Materials estimating, at best are just that, an estimate...sometimes you'll end up with a good amount left over...[which means you need to start another restoration...]...and other times you will find that you have come up far short...

Don't let that be a stumbling block...every boat restoration is different and the methods used by each individual, will inevitably make for variable material usage...

The other thing I want to know is... did you start your own restoration thread, and if you did, where is it...

Make a link to it on your signature, so we can all follow along and help where we can...

Best regards,
GT1M

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Ok ... This may be a dumb question to most of you but being a newbe I have to ask this. How important is it that when replacing the transom it extends all the way to the sides of the hull? When I removed the rotted transom I made the new one exactally the same size as the original. You can see the outline of the old transom in the photo and it is about 3" to 4" away from the sides. Is this going to be a problem?

Mine is the same way. But it just doesn't seem right for the transom tonot go all the way to the sides. So on mine I'm going toimprove it and make it go all the way. I don't understand how a boat company could design a transom so poorly, its basicly applying all the force to just the outter skin.

Thank you so much Jon Sob for all the information! I only ordered 3 gallons of poly resin, I guess I should go ahead and order another 2 gallons so that I won't have to wait a week when I run out

I am only guessing that because the stringers are metal and bolted thru the transom is the reason that they didn't extend it to the sides. You have to keep in mind that you have a small boat and by making things bigger and heavier you are adding extra weight to the boat. I put in back to back seats, a cabinet under the bow and a full sole with carpet and I am wondering if I have more weight then I should.

Three gallons of poly is a good start and by the time you run out you will have a good idea on about how much more you will need. I made plenty of mistakes that had to be ground down and done over so I used way more resin then I should have.
