The water shoots out of the black grommet thing like crazy. It has a hole in it too, makes me wonder if that is the only place where it "pees". Can you confirm if I'm supposed to get water out of the small black grommet on the starboard sides of the cowlings that is only connected to the throttle valve? It's the only hose on the throttle valve and it goes directly to the little grommet on the starboard sides of the cowlings.
I don't remember seeing that slot for an o-ring on the shafts but damn it I can't be sure without dropping them again.
I don't see why you cannot test on muffs. The tell-tales should be enough to let you know if the pumps are working.
If you don't get some flow from the exhaust relief with the engine running, you either have the exhaust gasket loose between the gearcase and the inner exhaust, your water supply is not adequate or you have not waited long enough.
If you don't have the grooves for the 0-rings below the splines at the top of the driveshafts, then the driveshafts are not the earlier ones used before 1993
