I just got this boat a couple days ago. 1985 Rinker with a Chevy 350 inboard 260hp. When the guy showed me the boat (out of the water) the prop spun just fine forward and reverse. So i get the boat home and changed the water in the lower unit yes when i say water i mean water the was very little oil in it. Had a little bit of metal shaving on the plug but nothing major. SO i put the boat in the water and get it running but it wont move. PRop not spinning at ALL just clicking noise like it not going into gear alll the way. When you lock in it gear the prop does not turn so its not spun out. What can it be?

Sounds like it's time for a rebuild but it may be cheaper to just buy a re manufactured drive.

You'll need to pull the drive either way to see where the water is coming from. With the drive off, you'll be able to put it in gear and see if the prop turns the drive shaft.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. . .

A Good salesperson . . . he knew not to put it in the water. It could be an adjustment, but anything further gets expensive.

If you try it (again) out of the water does the prop spin? First thing would be to see if the outdrive is truly going into gear, then proceed from there.

No it does not spin out of water. I think its just an adjustment because of the clicking noise almost like the gear isnt fully catchin. what would i adjust an where would it be?

Ayuh,... I really doubt it's Just an adjustment considerin' ya found it full of water,...

The drive has an upper gear set, which does a 90? turn, 'n the other gear set in the lower which does another 90? turn, 'n Shifts directions of the propshaft...

Pullin' the top cap will give ya a peek at the top gear set,...
Ya gotta strip the lower to see that gear set...

The clickin' yer hearin' is the dog-clutch in the lower, rubbin' on forward, or reverse...
Pull the drive, 'n shift it manually to see what it does....

Also, head on up to the Adults Only section at the top of this forum, 'n grab yerself a copy of the factory Manual for it...

Just as big of a question is --- HOW DID THE WATER GET IN THERE? And probably a bit less important is did the previous owner know about this? What does the leg oil reservoir bottle look like?

PS - where do I find this "adult" section? I'd like to download a service manual for me boat.

Thanks!

This is why you need the service manual, and you need to READ it carefully. I/O's are wonderfull but do take a lot of maintenience, this cannot be done correctly without a service manual.

OK thanks. One more question. I just took off the lower unit. While it was off I spun the prop shaft an the input spline Sid not turn. I'm assuming it should. Right?
