Other than asking to define "Best" this is not debatable. If the criteria is "band", then The Beatles. All else stems from them.

BTW, I love ELO, but ELO would say "The Beatles" . . . ;)

^^^^^^ I'm torn between Zeppelin and Floyd. I don't wanna have to choose. Just like choosing between a blond Brooke Burke or a brunnette Brooke Burke. :)

Time to fire this thread up ... Being an old school rocker and defining best as the best in concert ... "you wanted the best , you got the best the hottest band in the land KISS " (original members)

Hmmmmmm. It is quite common, but completely false, to believe that "ever" only began when you started listening.

In my "ever" is Glenn Miller.

As the son of a professional musician I was privileged enough to access to the Who?s who when it comes to music.

I have no one favorite.
Best Live Performance ? Rolling Stones
Best Studio Band ? Mike Oldfield
Best sound system ? Emerson Lake and Palmer
Best session Guitarist ? Neil Lofgren
Best Female Guitarist ? Bonnie Raitt
Best virtuoso Guitarist ? Jimi Hendrix

Had back stages passes for Canada Jam in ?78?. Was anyone else there?

For JB,
They have pictures of Stan Kenton holding me as a baby while conducting his orchestra. Dad was a friend of his.

I'd have to go with Led Zeppelin for a "desert island" pick for sheer versatility-- from mellow acoustic to the hardest of hard rockin'. Celtic music to blues to country to R&B influences. And originality-- yeah, you can argue they ripped off a lot of blues artists, but they took those blues tunes and made them totally their own. They're only one of a couple bands I bought a compilation CD set of all their albums years back, and I've enjoyed the heck out of it.

I can't answer this one. I'm torn between genres and ages. Although I'm relatively young I still love a lot of big band era music. But if I had to pick from rock and roll/alternative I would have to go with these:

The Who
Rolling Stones
Beatles (early years)
Led Zepplin
Leanard Skynard
Bon Jovi
Poison
Def Leapard
Nirvanna
Smashing Pumpkins
Foo Fighters
Lincoln Park
Dave Mathews

I agree. Thanks to the memories I sit here with a smile and my foot tapping. All I need now is a cold beer and my girl at my side.

This list does not meet the OPs rules and has resulted in you receiving an infraction. Plus they're all wrong  :p :D

Well I might go with the ELP choice, and I understand the Hendrix deal, but "virtuoso"? Maybe artist, but virtuoso heads me towards Eddie or Ritenour or DiMeola, kind of more that direction.

Studio Band . . . uh, Steely Dan?

I?ve been called a lot of things in my days but conformist has never been one of them. :D

Ok, I've give you that one on a technicality but I'd have to go with Julian Bream since he's the only which I've seen live.

I like SD but was never really a fan. Canned pop band. Good sound, mediocre musicians. I thought about Pink Floyd, not the same band live, but kept coming back to Mike Oldfield just by nature of his recordings.
