Hello everyone, and again ive got few questions about my first invader boat. Its about the deck . Well the deck looks really solid i did not found any soft or weak spots on the deck , so my question is if i should make a hole and check everything out under the deck ??*

Another thing is my plug hole is just hole there is no plug ????*

And last thing is i found few " cracks " on the hull but the cracks looks like a hair maybe not cracks ???*

Sorry about all these stupid questions but u know :) thanks a lot .*

Re: Older boat questions ...

1. I don't know about invader boats, if there is a bilge under the deck there should be access ports somewhere already.

2. Yes, you need a plug

3. The cracks are in the gelcoat and probably nothing to worry about, do they look like spiderwebs?

Re: Older boat questions ...

If you don't have soft spots in the floor, and the transom is solid - I wouldn't drill into the deck to check the stringers. Others might disagree with that, but I'd leave it sit for the moment. When you tilt the boat bow up, does it drain water out the back even when it's not been raining? If so, then you may have something to worry about ...

Plugs are pretty universal. There is a latch type and a screw type. My boat does better with the screw type, but my last boat liked the latches better. You may have to try one of each.

The cracks you describe sound like typical age/use cracks that fiberglass can get. Post some pics just to be sure.

Re: Older boat questions ...

Typical stress cracks on an older fiberglass boat. Only the first one looks like it has any real separation to it, and even then, it looks very minor... Nothing a little marine tex wouldn't fix.

Okay...... first I will move this post to the Restoration Section....

Second..... Invaders are known for hull cracks :( The construction was not the best but repairable. It will require MORE than marine tex since the Invader hulls have cracked and delaminated to the inside.

Yes you need to buy a plug ;)

Hi Mroz

Welcome to the Dry Dock!

Plenty of people here willing to walk you thru your project.

If you have a double layer of deck I would bet there is a bunch of rot hiding under there...

Your transom looks a bit suspect also.... I don't want to start throwing things at you until we can assess the damage...

The deck will have to come up to start with...then core samples of the foam, stringers, transom and bulkheads...

I merged your threads......let's keep them together. Allot of what I see is typical Invader construction :(

Re: OMG , i need help , BIG TIME !!! 1985 invader deck,hull ???

Check Don S's helpful tips sticky at the main restoration forum homepage, here

Once you've read thru some of those linked pages, find a post by oops & read thru his hull extension thread

Find a post from WoodOnGlass & click the links in his signature line. Good references

The last thread link on Don's tip page is friscoboater's SeaRay thread, go thru it & his other thread. He also has a YouTube channel w/ lots of videos that helped pull everything I was reading together & it made much more sense.

There are a bunch of great threads, scan thru the 5 that are at the bottom of your thread page. The Iboats server lists threads that are similar to yours at the end of every thread.

Scan thru some of the posts & threads on the Restoration forum homepage. You will quickly learn to recognize helpful & knowledgeable members as you read their posts & the info & help they give.

I suggest that you spend a lot of time reading thru & learning about the demo & put back of fiberglass boats. When you've read all you ever thought you wanted or needed to know about them, read at least 50% more.

Call ahead & ask for extra patience & commitment to carry you thru the process. It can be daunting at times, scary & depressing at times, but ultimately rewarding when you've finished & put her back in the water.

Ask for the same patience & commitment from friends, loved ones & especially spouses. This will test their resolve too, a good bit of this will be easier w/ additional hands, but can be done solo.

It may be a totally involved 'gut' job, but the Iboats crew will help you along the way. If they overlaid a 2nd layer of plywood deck & glassed over it, I doubt you will be thrilled w/ what it is hiding under there. So the 1st order of business is to open a hole in the deck & take a look around at the bilge & stringers. The cracks at the upper motor mount holes do not appear to be good news. Don't over cut thru the deck. Set the saw at 5/8 or 3/4" and stay away from the edges where it meets the hull sides. No reason to make more work for yourself but cutting thru the hull. It will happen, most of us do it, it can all be fixed. But it will be quite a bit of work, quite a bit of materials, and w/ no motor it will tend toward expensive.

BTW: The light at the end of the tunnel may be a train, but it is probably on the other track:) It can all be fixed no matter how bad it looks. It just takes money, time & the desire to finish it.

All that said, unless you LOVE this boat, LOVE the lines of the hull, LOVE the look of the cap & bow, you may find it more satisfying, easier to sustain completing and much more rewarding to work on to shop for a different project boat with a motor & a style/look/size that you LOVE. Without a motor, this hull has plenty of problems, and may have been a donor boat purchased by someone else for it's motor. You may want to do the same..........

Determine the thickness of the deck material and set you circular saw blade 1/16" deeper than that. Careful around the edges so you don't cut through the hull!!!

Re: OMG , i need help , BIG TIME !!! 1985 invader deck,hull ???

The hull is not a problem....it will be fixed while your tabbing in transom and stringers..

I found that either a 4 1/2" angle grinder with a cut off blade or one of those Rockwell sonic crafter tools works best for cutting along the edge of the deck next to the gunwales.... You have to take your time and be careful.... Leave about a 2" lip around where the deck meets the gunwale so you have a reference point of where the new deck will go back....it will also help in finding your stringer height...

That's a tough spot.... I did mine...it's in my thread below.... I would say you'll have to pop the top cap off the boat if everything is rotten under the walkthrough.....Mine wasn't too bad under there so I opted to keep my cap on....plus it is a 21' boat and I was working outside in the winter on it....
