If you got more than a fraction of one ohm, replace. Someone may have installed carbon filament plug wires, which are not used on outboards. Carbon filament wire is what one would find in almost all auto parts stores.

Sierra Mag Force leads are for 4 stroke I/O motors and are not metallic core and are not for outboards. Replace them all with wire core plug wire.

This engine, according to your first post was bought from a jerk-off. Who is the happy person today? Have you given a thought to a repair shop with some outbouard knowledge? Are you out of part's to replace? Let's take out a day, and guess. These engine's cannot be fixed with the tool's in the kithchen drawer.

R Johnson is a kick a** pro outboard tech.

You don't have the proper manual, evinruderepair.com is gone, it was a bootleg CD website, you're working with junk repair info.
They tend to copy clymer and seloc manuals, they're a waste of hard cash.
I had one and gave it away.

What R Johnson is saying is it would be a lot cheaper to have a pro do it, you cAn throw $1000 in parts at these engines if you don't take the logical approach it still won't run, that starts with the right manual and following the simple troubleshooting proceedures.

Quite simply, get the right book, the right tools and follow the book.
Don't buy used elec parts.:)
Unless YOU removed them from a running engine in person.

I like to tell myself "by the time I'm done I'll have a new engine".
Yah, with OLD pistons.

Re: One thing after another...

I have invested a total of $200 in parts. Thats how much it would cost me to tell the shop my problem. I would rather spend a couple months working on it myself so I know what to do when I get stranded. I am not one to drop my problems off on other people. I am in the military so I am not made of money either.

R Johnson, if you are offering to come do labor on my boat at the same rate I charge my self then by all means come on over, I will give you my address. but fact of the matter is, that stuff costs money I dont have.

The root of my problems, I suspect is my plug wires. I hooked up a solid wire to test it and I am getting a solid consistant spark. My plug wires are measuring 500+ ohms when they are supposed to be near zero.

You can get a spark plug wire kit from iBoats or ebay for around $32 with the correct wire. It comes with 25' of wire. I just bought a kit and have as yet to do my V4, but I am sure it doesn't need all 25'. If you measure what you need I can send you some if that helps. Just PM me. :)

Re: One thing after another...

I appreciate the offer. I saw those kits too, I think thats what I am going to do also. I will probably get the kit too so I have some left over. I am going to get a smaller boat once I get this one running, so I'm sure the extra will come in handy. If you don't mind, and if its not a trouble, could you measure the resistance on the wire you have, just so I have a ball park figure to shoot for? BK said they should be close to zero.

Just a sidenote... I really appreciate all the help I have gotten on this forum. You all have been so helpful through this whole ordeal. I just hope that I can help out other people as much as y'all have helped me.

Sure, I'll try to grab my VTVM at lunch and see. The wires are actually here on my desk, so I should be able to answer that before tonite. Stand by!

Re: One thing after another...

Just bought a DIY plug wire kit on ebay. Should be here mid-week. We'll see what that does. I imagine my timing will need to be adjustedbecause of that magnet being spun... Can I use an automotive timing light for that? The more I think about this, the more it doesn't make any sense. How could it have gone from running to this without anything being done to it... Crazy. I hope I'm on the right track and not just spinning my wheels.

Or spinning your stator :p

Never heard of plug wires just all of a sudden going from working to not working on one bank, but give it a try, who knows.

I'm pretty sure there is no way that this will fix it, but the plug wires need to be replaced either way, so I'll go ahead and fix that. As far as the real problem, I'm still waiting for some kind of sign from Heaven as to what's really wrong with this thing.

Re: One thing after another...

Plug wires are on. Still no spark. I'm getting good reading at the coils still. I think I'm going to break down and buy the stator. But before that, Exactly how is a dva meter read. I have the adapter and I have my meter set on the appropriate volt level. But I get a somewhat erratic reading. It has a minimum of 150 like its supposed to but it will go to ~150 to ~170 to ~190 to ~170 and just kinda cycle between 190 and 155ish. Is it supposed to bounce around or should it be a solid number that doesn't fluctuate?
