Ok, well I wanted the change in color to at least look somewhat intentional, so did this to make a transition...mind you it is not pulled tight yet

Still not too thrilled about the color, but if the customer is happy, I am happy....

I can tell the diff in the 1st pix, but the other 2 not at all. I know it's the digital camera & lighting, but as long as the customer OK'd it, roll w/ it. Your stitch work on the cover looks great.

I can't tell the difference from here Judge. I agree with the others, if the customer is happy then I'd just have to swallow hard and be happy myself,

keep up the great work!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Thanks guys, I think since the only places it will be that color are back/sides it will end up looking all right, the transition was just something I thought of last night, and it looks a lot better now that it has been pulled tight and has its reinforced seam lines in...the picture was during a test fit...thought I was done for the evening, but had to work some more....

Today I got my EIDN, had my fictitious name registered with courts and opened a business account, so now its all official, I might go LLC later down the road but for now I just set up as a DBA

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

When you hit the bigs, I'd like to be your 1st customer in WV:cool:

I already tell people I knew ya BEFORE ya got the sewing machine (BSM)

EIDN is an interesting choice. If you feel like sharing, what's it stand for. PM if you prefer....

Congrats, definitely a milestone.

I don't know what your plan is for the new spread, but I'd contact an accountant & see how much rent you can charge EIDN for the shop space. As a DBA there may not be any advantage. It's all still you. Once you LLC or incorporate, it may have some advantages.....

Well done again, this seems to be a trend:)

Yep, that's how I meant it:cool: BSM.... Fits nicely w/ my MBS & MOBS

Duh, I knew EIN, but I for some reason I thought it was what you'd registered as a fictitious name:facepalm: Duh..... anyway, congrats.

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Nice job Judge. I was following this thread to see how things came out.

I own a business that repairs vinyl and leather upholstery and sub work also with upholstery shops myself. If the color bothered you, you may have someone in your area like myself that can spray change the color to match. (just a note for future reference)

Good luck with the new business venture!

Really take the time and figure out what this job should really cost to complete. Materials, shipping cost of those materials, overhead on your future building, insurance, electric, maintenance of sewing machines, saws, tools etc and when they need to be replaced.

Then factor in the hours of labor to do the job, in uninterrupted circumstances. When you have a place and the phone rings, customers walk in, etc the start and stop to complete the job will take longer to finish than you originally planned on.

I'm sure you priced it low for the experience factor and the ability to gain future work. People will talk and say ... it only cost so and so X dollars to do the similar job. Just be careful with under pricing yourself. Let your work stand for itself and that quality craftsmanship / knowledge costs money. Just don't under price yourself out of business. Usually the largest jobs earn you the least amount of money with the highest level of aggravation / stress attached to them. Don't let that happen! (I'm just speaking from experience)

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Thanks mike, I have learned a lot from this job as far as pricing goes...now I figure in my lack of space and the inefficient area I am working in, I know I would have made pretty decent money, but because of the time it has taken I really am just breaking even. The customer is paying for the extra materials ordered fortunately...I did tell him I went over but was going to eat the cost (hoping he would say he would pay it, making it his idea) but he said what I was hoping and told me just keep the receipts. I will be sending you a PM, have a few questions and would love to speak to someone else in the industry with more experience!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

I'd be glad to shed some insight if I can. I'm on my way out to fix a torn couch right now. I'll check back later on tonight!

You brought up another issue, plan on needing more material, time etc to complete the work so you aren't stuck. Luckily the customer said he would take care of it, some people aren't as nice later on. I'm always upfront and honest with them about it and in some instances give a ballpark estimate until I'm certain of the cost.

the Base where it is still wood, we decided to wrap in the same carpet he used for deck, this will hold up a lot better to people kicking it, so will last longer I think

thanks, here is one with the carpet, just so you get an idea of how it looks...this carpet matches his deck, so it will blend nicely, also has tan, brown, grey and black colors in it so matches everything really
