That all sounds good, plus a nice big pedal! Just 2yd short seems pretty good to me:)

Hi Judge,

I have been following along and learning alot, but basically just watching and getting educated... so much so that between wood, mrjdflores and you, I am actually thinking of someday down the road tackling this type of project for my boat...thanks for sharing. The biggest reason I had to post is to thank you for the one picture on Iboats that literally had me laughing my ***** off for a good 5 minutes...I am still giggling like a fool as I am typing this...Thank You! I needed that!

Oh yeah, and Congrats on the new home front...Awesome Score! You and yours not only have earned it, you deserve it! Enjoy, Happily ever after...:D

Keep up the Outstanding work
Regards,
Gus

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

thanks GT1M, it had me laughing pretty hard and just had to share...plus it is proof that I share my mistakes too! wish I could get back to my own boat but I am now booked pretty solid for other people, my next job is a lot easier, bases are solid and upholstery is not in bad shape so just rip all the seams and copy the patterns sew and replace....will make it a lot easier with the extra space as well, planning out an 8X8 table, with vinyl rack on one end, allowing me to pull it out and cut then have my sewing machines strategically placed to use for sewing...It causes all kinds of trouble when a heavy slip cover slides off the end of your working space and pulls against the spot your sewing...that slip cover has almost 4 yards of 32oz material so weighs like 8 lbs lol

JBC thanks for your visit as always enjoy having you comment!

That is exactly like my pedal. You can make a wedge to put under it and easily control the speed now.

yeah wood, had considered that...I will put my pedal on this one as a back-up, or second station so I don't have to keep changing thread colors or tensions for different seams, I have to get its timing adjusted, it wont pick up the bobbin thread so can not use it yet...but free stuff I just can't pass up lol

I did not like the way the front kickboard was working out for me, when I pulled the rest of the slipcover tight the front would be too loose, so I did something different there

Started by cutting it off and ending it just past the foamed ends, also stapled the base lip cover at same time.

then I sewed 1/2 strips of masonite into the 2 ends of kickboard (since they would not be stapled this will keep them firm and straight)

Next I tacked the kickboard across the top using another 1/2" strip of masonite, this will keep a straight line there and wont pucker/dip between staples

Then I pulled it tight and stapled to bottom of bench, which left a nice straight edge on sides and top of the piece

thought I would share my idea with ya...took a bit of pondering but that was my solution to my problem

Still working on it...wife is mad at me now (not really because it was her idea) because I moved furniture in the living room and am working on them in there now....dang I can't wait til July and can move into my shop...Am not posting many pics because well if ya seen 1 slip cover ya seen em all...the bigger ones are made the same way, just longer. Hopefully this weekend I will be posting finished pictures, on the trailer driving far far away from here!

Good deal, fewer steps between work area & construction zone, but yeah, the Admiral over my way is not happy that there are 2 extra boat hardware pieces in & around our family room. Not too thrilled w/ my computer work space there either, but now she can still see me while I'm online reading, following & learning a bit more each day. None of that even remotely compares to the MBS conversation though.......

The covers all look really great. And 1 or 2 set backs on a 1st gig still seems outstanding!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

tried something new today, I needed 1.5" X 5" strips of foam for covering my top rail, so I took a 5" thick cushion and cut it into 1.5" strips. I normally use an electric carving knife to do my foam cuts, but did not think I could keep a straight line 1.5" wide for 5 feet of the cushion length...to solve my problem I took the foam to my friends wood shop and used his bandsaw, ran it through and it cut very nicely with a fine tooth blade on it...just for future reference its an option if you have access to one to cut your foam on a bandsaw

After

and it only took 10 minutes to boot!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Waiting on a delivery of the vinyl I was short on ordering for this job....so in the mean time I worked on solving my joint on the wrap-around bench...I did not want my seat cushion and back cushion to have 2 different joint lines so created a pocket to carry the foam/vinyl and allow it slide into the other one, creating a more seamless look IMO

So got the seat covers cut and sewn, still waiting on the material I need to finish up, but gives you a look at finished....this was the first one I made where I decided how and where to sew seams to get it all to fit, so learned some and the others should be tighter/cleaner fit

can also see my next job in the background here

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Not too pleased right now, as you know I under-ordered the tan vinyl and needed more, so called my supplier and was told that the one I ordered was a discontinued item and they could not get more...so he found something he thought would match...this is what I got today! Not really that close at all....now i am waiting on customer to decide, because it will be used only to wrap the back and sides, it wont scream "I am different," but personally I think we should send it back and let them try again

IMG_4500.jpg

*edit* Customer thinks it looks fine and that I am just too picky lol...said to use it....we shall see....

Yeah, close but not perfect. Not unlike hull imperfections, once he starts to use the 'toon w/ the new seat work and 1 side or the other gets more or less sun, it won't be nearly as evident. Either way, he'll still be WAY ahead of other upholstery quotes if he even got any others.

The Quality of your work will outshine vinyl color variations, by far, I suspect.

Cheers,

I bet that across the seams, it'll be hardly noticeable at all - don't let it drag you down! Sounds like you have a very happy customer!

Judge, Here's what I did with trim jobber when I had a similar issue. Send a piece of the original so he can carry it back to the warehouse and physically compare it. I did and the next shipment was almost dead perfect. If your customer wants to wait on it he can probably get it a bit closer. No guarantees but that's my advice.
