Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

I see an opportunity to host a sewing seminar. Circles are for quilts, boat upholstery IS man's work:facepalm: Have machine will travel.:)

Trade lessons for moving help on an hour per hour basis. Vinyl, foam, plywood backers, thread & adult frosty beverages can all be bring your own. Better get a new full cylinder for the grill though.

YUP, sounds like a great idea to me! lucky for me my sewing machine is a "portable" with a case for travel  I could even bring the popup to provide my own sleeping arrangements. I bet you'd get a few of us interested in visitin.

Tin boat upholstery is still upholstery, right.....

Unless w/ all that showroom space, you can talk WOG into a glass rehab seminar, then I'll have to bring Red1.

Wrap up the week w/ some JDA b!t@hin' painting & stripping session.

The yak is portable too:D and just needs Reg#'s to use the motor:)

Mine regularly asks: "What's this going to cost me?" when I'm online for more then an hour. Rightfully so, I figure.

Keep me in the loop on the move too!

Had to call and tell the customer that pleats were not going to happen...I just can not get 2 pleated sections through my machine to tie in the corners I really need a professional machine, it sucks but he said he was ok without pleats, but still hurts the pride telling someone you could not do what ya planned....

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

so here are some samples of what I am doing instead...

IMG_4342.jpg

the double angled back/side corners were what caused me trouble, having to sew the joint to get my angles right would not work with 2 pleated pieces...it is a shame I do not have a commercial machine that would accommodate that thick under the presser foot

IMG_4341.jpg

the top of the bench, instead of doing a 45 degree angle there, I like the look of a straight seam, it is a little tougher to do but looks good IMO, of course again a double angled seam leading into a 90 degree turn put my resolve to the test

IMG_4343.jpg

he also wants reinforced seams. said he likes the visible seam look and of course it is much stronger overall...

Man...sux about the pleats, but it still looks great! I really like the exposed seams (I wanted french seams, but decided against given my machine!). I'd keep my eye on CL for a commercial/industrial machine...they pop up quite often here for $250-$500.

Also, congrats on the new shop/house/land/cottage/garage...ideal for what you want!

The pleats would have looked great but not pleated would be easier to keep clean I think..

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

so we decided square panels did not look good, me and my seam ripper went to work...this is what I ended up with instead

IMG_4346.jpg

IMG_4345.jpg

the side only has a 2" wide strip so that it lines up with the seat base, which sticks out 4" from kick board allowing the base and sides brown/tans to line up straight

IMG_4348.jpg

following a curve with a visible stitch is not the easiest thing to do...

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

So I decided to do a slip cover, instead of having staples across the back top.

IMG_4363.jpg

It was 103" long so I had to do a splice somewhere, only place I could think it would look right is to match seams with the other panel...so I made it 2 splices (25.5" first piece, 52" second piece, and 25.5" last piece) in order to look right I had to be accurate...fortunately for me a broken clock is right twice a day

need to close in the front of the arms, and tighten it up and the part is done!

not like I want to, but I have gotten used to the switch finally and is not giving me as much trouble as it used to....can not wait tomove, because I am just tuckered out...in order to have room to work I moved 1 to basement...so down stairs to measure, up to cut...down to fit....up to sew....down to double check...up to reinforce...down again just because I left something there last time I went...well you get the jest of it!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Well all that work @ the stairs is paying off, covers look great, pleats or no pleats:)

Could you have picture framed the pleats? Kind of like this:
FireFliteseatlayout.jpg

But have the pleats run how you had them before. I've not done any sewing yet, or even practice, but I thought it may have fit under your walking foot.... Depending on the foam and final look of what your clients want, you might even stitch a double seam where the back & the bottom 'cushions' would have abutted. Just a random thought that perked to the surface...

What you've done so far looks great......

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

it wasn't the framing of the pleating that was the problem, both the back and sides are angled to be more comfortable when sitting sideways in the seat, and in order to get that double angle I had to use 2 pieces cut at an angle and seamed, the pleated area joining 2 pleated sections was over 1" thick and even though the foam could be pressed down and stuffed under, it would not feed, it was just too much for my machine. they really liked the pleats after I talked them into it, but was never an original plan, just something I wanted to add to make it pop!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

So today, I am just jamming to some tunes...tapping my foot to the beat of the sewing needle, enjoying the fact I was putting in the final seam of the slip cover....which is getting quite unwieldy and heavy BTW...

IMG_4367.jpg

IMG_4366.jpg

as fast as I could went down stairs to do a final fitting before I fire up the compressor and set some staples

IMG_4368.jpg

Nice, BUT THEN.....

Brace yourself before scrolling down!

wait for it......

you ever just have one of those "AHH SH*T" moments?

just thought you'd get a kick out of that!

that it was wood, and easy enough to fix just amusing at a time when I needed a good laugh...so 1 down...3 to go....I am beginning to get that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when I look at my roll of tan vinyl...you know the one....the one that says, did I order enough?

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

Got to precut the rest of the seats today, once the first was done, I follow same patterns, only place that is different is the width of the back and base cushions, so I determined that I will be only 2 yards short of the tan...when I took this job and got base measurements, the original seats did not have arm rests on the ends and since I added them, I miscalculated somewhat.

Also solved my foot pedal issue, picked this up free, and am taking the foot pedal and putting it on my machine

I just like the pedal more than the button
