This summer I got a few messages asking for help from new members who only made one or two posts.

Other forums I belong to will not let new members send private messages or use other features (like their classifieds) until the new member has racked up 50 posts.

I think that rule should be applied here. What do you think?

Re: Put Limits on new members?

Sounds pretty silly to me. Seems like it would just drive up the number of irrelevent posts.

If I was a new member, and there was a 50 post new member threshold for PM'ing, etc, it would take me about 2 minutes to rack up 50 bullship posts so I could use all the features.

The forums that have those rules also take that into account. You are not allowed to must make garbage posts and rack up 50 in one day. That gets you banned.

The fact is it works for many, many other forums where people gather to share information on common hobbies.

Don't just jump on the band wagon of "Don't want to do it, it might drive away buyers from iboats." that is just a pure BS statement and highly inflammatory stance. You have to be middle of the road to be here, no politics allowed. So stop it before the thread gets canned.

And I am tired of telling people to post their message on the forum. Maybe I'll just ignore them, or tell them to **** off. Would that be better?

this is exactly what i'll do. it don't take much time. this forum has helped me so much that i really don't mind leading the new folks in the right direction for the best help they can get. most of the time. that's not me... if i do have a relevant comment for them, i'll state it, but then again, suggest the main forums. 2 minds are better than one imho..

Maybe add something like this to your sig?

"Please do not send me Private Messages asking for advice/help. Post it in the forums and I will gladly help you there. Thanks!"

You have a link to those rules somewhere? What's the limit on posts per day? Tashadaddy is showing over 50,000 posts in less than 5 years, that's almost 30 posts per day average right there.

Who decides if the posts are garbage or not? Seems like you could go on any internet forum and post 50 reasonable responses in different threads. They don't have to be correct (this is the internet), just reasonable enough to get by the forum censor.

If you don't want to reply to PM's you don't have to. They'll figure out pretty quick that they need to ask their question somewhere else. If not, it wasn't important enough for them to worry about it so why should you?

Well, it is just a little annoying to get PMs with technical questions but a simple, "Technical questions are answered in the correct forum." takes care of it. Get a lot of those.

The general style of the iboats Boating Forums has served iboats and our members well since before the turn of the century. Any changes we contemplate should enhance, rather than reduce, the helpfulness to new members.

Sorry, I had to laugh when I read that. It reminded me when I used to hear great grandpa say that. I always thought, wow, that was a long time ago...

I never at the time gave it any thought that we would see the next century and someday say that very thing. In fact, until I read it, I never even thought about it all, let alone saying it. But it fits:D

As for the post limits...I think it would be a bad idea. Just answer back as suggested or delete without an answer period.

Some people have read and lurked around for a long time. You start to get the feeling you understand a persons demeaner and character. Some people are timid and do not want the world to see what they said, so they ask "privately" who they feel they relate with the best. Or, who they feel may give the right answer. So to that I say, Mark, you should feel honored that people hold you in that high regard.:D

Just another way to look at it.

I thought these boards were for help and information. As for pm's I agree. Post not to pm you. Post in the correct fourms. Works for me. It's called respecting others rights.

Talk about annoying, take a minute and look at some of the answers that are posted in the engine help sections they range from advice on types of engines that people don't have a clue what there talking about (they don't know a 4 from a 6 cyl) to down right dangerous advice. If any things needs to be addressed that would be my suggestion.

Re: Put Limits on new members?

You must give good advise and act professional in your posts. The person seeking info is not sending the same PM questions or looking for advise from the idiots. I see all time in posts, people give a good answer and then never return to the post. So the new guy may want to send a pm to remind you of what advise you gave allready. :D
