Re: deck and stringer replacement

Hi!
I just bought my first boat (today, actually). It happens to be a 16' Tahiti that I am in love with <3 :)

It has no floor! So...here I am; eager to learn!! just call me "Grasshopper" 8D

I'm a 45 yr. old single female. I have some tools and no boat knowledge. I'm smart and adamant.
If I can, I'm going to ask you every question I can and hang on every helpful word that comes across my screen from this website.

So...how far along are you? What did you start with? Reverse that order...

Welcome to iboats Amasoa.

You posted the above in an inactive thread (over 90days since the original poster commented on the thread) so a Moderator moved your post to your own restoration thread.....

Post up some pix of your boat.

The crew @ the dry dock will help you get it figured out..

Welcome to your resto thread...

Re: deck and stringer replacement

Okay...here are pics of the boat.

However...I'm not sure how still in love with it I am.

The are pictures the p.o. sent me when I was shopping. We talked and I committed to the purchase with the caveat that all was as disclosed. When I went to look at it, the boat was "dry docked", on the ground, and the trailer no where to be seen. He said his son took it to get new tires. Okay. The boat looked just as it should, no surprised.
When I went to pick it up, yesterday, the tires were not new. He said they were new, used, tires, better than what had been on there, and would be okay for awhile. The real problem was when I noticed there wasn't a tag on the trailer. He said he didn't have the title, but would give me a bill of sale. Now, this is getting complicated beyond a new floor.
I am not happy when people only tell me what you ask to know, not what I need to know; feels sneaky.

So here are the pics. The guy only wants $100.00 bucks for boat and trailer. I have found a Snark 12' Sun Chaser II (will need to re-skin with an epoxy)00101_6lFbYSl7mjW_600x450.jpg00x0x_7YffMrGV8rl_50x50c.jpgfor the same hundred, that I can put a 65-lb thrust trolling motor on. At 125lbs. I can just pick up and slide onto the top of my camper...no muss, no fuss. Now, I'm not sure which way I want to go.

Re: deck and stringer replacement

Depends on what you want. The Tahini isn't a 65lb thrust trolling motor only kinda boat. It's not a quick grab & go kinda boat either when the mood to go boating strikes you. Nor quick & easy in terms of the amount of time, effort & money necessary to get it water ready.

More important then anything else you've posted here or the other few posts you've made, IMHO, is this:
....feels sneaky.
W/ regards to the Tahini.

A close 2nd in terms of important things to note was this:
....I'm not sure how still in love with it I am.

The 1st is a knock down punch, but the fatal blow was the 2nd.

You had better LOVE the Tahini, & NO other boat will do. Specifically this particular hull & whatever it needs is THE ONE & ONLY....

Since you've considered the Tahini, and choose a Snark 12ft'r as an alternative, I would recommend you DON'T buy the Tahini & DO buy the Snark. If it'll get you into a boat, inexpensively, & you're quickly able to rehab it for use, there is little reason not to.

Who knows, you may not even like boat ownership. Having a good friend w/ a boat is GREAT too :) I was that guy & my Admiral certainly wishes I was still the guy who has friends w/ boats.

If you discover you LOVE boat ownership & once you do some minimal rehab on the Snark, think you'd like to attempt a larger scale rehab, revisit the Tahini. It is extremely likely to still be available months from now if he doesn't have a title. Unless he cuts it up & scraps it.

Or start looking over the winter for a project that is the kind of boat you'd like to have, if the Snark just doesn't check all the boxes of what you want & need in a boat. It might & your done w/ your resto career.

If you're getting bad vibes from the seller, walk away. It isn't worth it. In fact, that boat & trailer as you describe them, sounds like it should be a FREE boat & trailer. But there are no more expensive boats to resto then the 'free' ones :watermelon:.... If I get a weird vibe from the 'seller', I wouldn't even take a free boat & trailer from them, in almost all situations.

Good luck, however you proceed

No title and Bill of Sale only in most cases is a yard planter only. I would not pay $100 for a yard planter

considering the boat is just a fiberglass hull with no floor, questionable paperwork and a shoddy seller. not only should you walk away from the deal, I would run as WOG mentions.

I agree, depending on what state you live in, not having title to the trailer may require all sorts of gymnastics to have it titled in your name. In Illinois, it would not be easy... and would be a deal-stopper for me. Especially on a boat that's already going to require some work.

Re: deck and stringer replacement

Well, that's that.
I called the seller and told him I felt like I was biting off more than I could chew and just couldn't put that much money into something that would still be sitting under a tarp next year. He told me he understood about the money but really needed it out of his yard (ironic) and that I could just have at no charge. I have to admit that I was tempted, but then I remembered something I had read; There is no such thing as a free boat".
I told him I wish him luck.
I'm picking up the Snark on Friday. The more I think about it, the happier I am with the decision. Thanks to everyone for all the consideration and advice. I found some videos on YouTube that walk through the repair process and a castlecraft website where manufacturers of this kinds of boats gives care & repair tips and lists of replacement parts (if I want to sail it).
Again, Thank you all...I will post pix of the boat and my progress!

Re: deck and stringer replacement

Good morning, All...Sirs.

Below is my Snark, I think it will be perfect for me & the pooch. Yes, being single and more of a loner, I am looking for something easy and convenient. This can be slid on/off top of my camper for my trips and/or in/out bed of my truck for short jaunts when I get the urge. I decide to customize the base of a market umbrella to fit where the sail rig would usually go.
I found a trolling motor on Craigslist. He didn't know what lb. thrust it was, but said he took it off a 15' fiberglass so it should push mine without problem. He had wanted $45 for it, but then said he was tired of tripping over it, so for $20 I could pick it up when I went to into Orlando to get boat, tomorrow.
To change the subject, for a moment. I scrolled down all the contributions to my cause and noticed all the usernames are those of Naval Officers. Had to smile at the thought of my having a virtual "Fleet" at my disposal... :):):)

yikes.

Is that white the foam core of the boat?

But full disclosure, before you show up to grab it, is better then your interactions w/ the Tahiti owner.

If you are comfortable w/ the work to be done:

CONGRATS on your 1st boat purchase..

Re: deck and stringer replacement

Now...what to name her. Very important.
I thought about "Mini-Me" because she's light, but strong, virtually unsinkable, and ready to go in a heart-beat...:)
I had my camper for 2 months before I settled on "Casa de Christi" (my name is Christina). So, it's okay if it takes some time for the boat's name. It is important, but should have settled on something by time to paint/gel coat.
Any ideas on colors? My first instinct is a greenish/black so as not to stand out on a lake, but the girly-girl in me thinks, "Wow, nothing pretty about that...". Will have to give this some thought. Also need to check colors available & cost. I've heard that red cost more than other colors. I don't want red (battle color, not peaceful color, IMHO), but are some colors more expensive than others?
At the moment, I have $120.00 in this + fuel to Orlando and back. Not bad, but can add up quick with repairs and such, if I'm not diligent. On top of epoxy and stuff, I will need a deep cycle gel battery. I already have truck wired to recharge as driving, but thought that if I remove truck battery and put in boat just before launch, well, won't have to worry about coming back and finding my truck gone, will I? :) Will, also, need oars, PFDs for me & Pooch, small anchor, a spot light...Yeah, can add up fast!
Hope all have a WONDERFUL day!!!

Yes, that is the foam core. They are made of one piece foam core (is a closed cell substance) and then coated with skin. Very simple concept and, from what I have read, almost unsinkable. If I understand all the facts I have compiled from everywhere, I can completely sand of skin, fill any foam cracks, and reseal it. Even if the actual form is gouged(spelling ?), it can be filled with simply Styrofoam and urethane glue. Saw a few people even use minced coffee-cup/glue mixture to fill real holes in forms. Anyone know anything about this to the contrary or in more detail?

Yes, the Snark is a styrofoam boat with a thin covering. Great boat for the kids to learn to sail in.

Re: deck and stringer replacement

Uhhhmm...I went out and researched Snark Sail Boats. It appears they are made from ABS Plastic. That's NOT good. It takes special resins to repair ABS. Normal Poly resin will EAT the white Foam Core of that boat. There are ways to avoid that but it would take some work. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but...This boat, IMHO is a Lost Cause. The amount of money needed to bring her back to a usable state could be better invested in a more seaworthy vessel. JMHO!!!!
