Re: Repairing stringer

hi bud......

i also noticed you said youhave different thicknesses of transom...

when you replace it.....make sure that the area around the drive is the same thickness....
this is called parrellism.......the inner transom must be flat and 2 ins thick to the outer transom....the outer transom must be parelell with the inner transom or yout out drive will leak.

this is really simple stuff....and if you use standard transpom building practeses...it wont be an issue

Re: Repairing stringer

Well busy day to-day ordered new exhaust manifolds gaskets etc . Also went and drilled some fresh holes in the transom and port stringer Port stringer shavings when squeezed produced liquid not so with the transom! still at a loss as to the material used on the outer transom ?

Anyway I managed to get a accurate measurement of the transom thickness at the housing ("2")
and from the drill shavings it is plywood. so the transom on both sides of this would be 1-1/2"as to the material used "who knows"but it's solid and dry so I'm going to leave that alone.
I am hoping that the rot is only in the 1/2"of ply.I'll just keep digging till I find whats there
when does this stuff ever end?

be sue to grind the old glass a little past the area your going to be glassing and wash it down with acetone well just before you do the layup. This will give you a good bond to the old glass :)

I am right there with you. I am not sure if you said you were doing this, but I would take the skin off the lower 6 inches of the transom. It looks like water leached into the bottom. It should be an easy fix.

Thanks Rick!
My major ginding is not started yet and not really looking forward too it.I'm still trying too get out the bad spots that centre part on the transom I removed over 1/2 of the lower portion of inside skin then removed the 1/2"plywood which was bad! not rotten just wet when this was removed I ran into a thick layer of fiber glass.
was thinking maybe I should remove the rest of the 1/2"part and then install a whole new piece or is this necessary?

Yes I removed all the skin from the centre piece.but only removed the bad parts of the 1/2"ply
I still have a little issue at the bottom where the centre piece meets the outside port transom there seems to be a little wet material in this area but I thought I would dry it as best I could with some heat lamps then apply some "GIT-ROT"to this area my other option was to just keep digging till I found dry wood.then piece in a new part.
anyone have input on this?(drying)

I never used Git-Rot.... are you to the outter skin at the bottom of the transom or is that just the 1/2" ply removed?

That's just the 1/2"ply removed seems they used alternating layers of FG(thick) and 1/2"ply in the transom assembly!

Help me understand. You have gone this far and you want to use Git Rot instead of Putting in an entire new transom?? WHY??? A few more hours of work and few more dollars and you will have a boat that you can be SURE will last your LIFETIME and be 100% safe and sound. I'm NOT gettin it!!!!

Hello Nemo..

I hope you understand this is not your typical stringer/trans rebuild...

This is Alot of structural glassing going on here.

You have allready cut away Alot of glass that makes me kinda nervous..you better make dam sure your ready to do alot of glassing to do it right ( I personally would have left this alone untill it was ready for a resto..it wasnt all that bad IMHO ) but moving on..

Remember in the future just because you have damp wood does not mean its structurally failed.

I see in one of your post that you were apologetic in posting pics.. DONT be.. post them pics as much as you like :)

I would say right now..get a full face resporator and a pair of ear muffs...tape the gloves to your full tyvek suit and get ready to grind...

You have alot of grinding and glassing as it stands right now..get ready..make it safe..take pics.

I will help as much as I can ( PM me if I dont reply to the thread just to keep me up to date..when I use my phone during the day the Highlights go away so I might miss some things ).

Yep got in there today afte rapplying heat for only one night and things really dont seem quite so bad!I was just concerned about a spot approx 6"x 4" where outer and centre transoms meet on the port side. as I told Rick I haven't really started to grind and sand yet. and rest assured that after I glass I twill be strong like "B?LL", and for sure a lot better then I have now.
Took a little break to-day and worked on the leg and thermostat housing! here are a few pictures from to-day

I am planning on using 1/2 "exterior plywood on the transom,I have heard that some plywood has voids in it . Is this a big issue?

Re: Repairing stringer

OK so I'm going to get started with the rough grinding. Here are some pictures from to-day. I do have a question though when grinding, is it really necessary to get right down to the original hull because some of this glass that was put on here is pretty thick and looks to be just fine.?
no comments on the man from mars please!!!

Thanks frisco I think I'll do just that! I ground down most of the stringer, mount & bulkhead area's were they attached too the hull just have the edge of the transom to grind then it will be time for the 36 grit sand paper too come out and of course the dreaded cleanup.good thing I have a lot of filters for the shop vac, oh and also I had my good wife :) make me some cloth filter covers for the fine FG grindings!

Your standard cdx ply will have voids and those will be weak spots especially if a bolt is running through it. I checked with my lumber supplier ( I am a contractor) and they stock underlayment plywood.....less voids than cdx but still has exterior glue in it. I used that type ply for my stringers and bulkheads.

I see you have found the joys of grinding too :D
