Restore Switch Panel?

I need to restore this panel. Corrosion around the SS screws on the aluminium panel. A few years ago I would have sanded her down, apply alumiprep, 545, and AwlGrip her. All the AwlGrip I have is gloss, I'd prefer something dull.

What are your suggestions on this restore.

You might look into Krylon Fusion Plastic Paint. They make it in Black Satin. It is really good stuff for plastic. I did some plastic outdoor furniture with it last year and it still look brand new.

Hi woodonglass,

Do you recommend this paint on aluminium? If so, what would you do to prep and prime?

Thanks,
Mike

Sounds good to me, and simple, Mr. Bond. I'm thinking some black fiber washers behind the SS screws to help prevent this from happening again.

And....Thanks for closing my other thread, now I'm getting somewhere on the issues I posted! :)

Hey my friend....

I dont want to over complicate things....

one thing I can think of is the color match of the black.....

Most of us in this forum would not care if the color is not bang on with the resto of the surrounding panels.....but you are in a different situation...

I have reapired all my jobs with flat tremclad....(rustolieum)
there has always been a color difference between the black of other panels and the new black.

something you might want to consider

I always like your thinking, oops! I only have one panel. This Whaler is layed out simply. Lots of complications behind the helm, but the dash is pretty clean.

Not so bad after all, Woodonglass. You actually answered another question about painting the frame around the head door.

If it were mine I would have it blasted and powder coated in a satin black. Even beter would be to leave satin in the label pocket and do a light texture or wrinkle on the rest of the panel. Labels don't like sticking to the textured finish so that won't work in the pocket.

Thanks Sleeper....I considered powder coating. The labels aren't the stick on type. That is actually a window that lights up, integrated into the panel. To remove it for powdercoating would be a chore, lots of soldering to do.

That sounds like a PITA. I guess it would be too easy if the panel would seperate and you could leave the lighted section attached to the helm while removing panel to work on it.

How is that, YD? I have 545 and AG on hand. Use it?

Re: Retore Switch Panel?

I've been looking at 3M DI-NOC carbon fiber vinyl for use in a number of places on my project. The use it on cars (including hoods and tops), so it must hild up to the sun fairly well. I'm going to order some to play with.

Just an alternative to think about...

I would like to make a panel out of that, Captain, I just don't think I can very easily. Thanks, I will consider it for another use!
