Re: Restoring my MFG

One of the MFG details I like most, is a thing I call, an arrowhead. I've heard them called everything from Gunnel trim to rub-rail ends. If your boat has a full compliment, consider yourself lucky :D Mine didn't, but I was lucky to find a junker that had one good one on it.

The others I had, were really rough. I tried to polish them, but the castings were too badly pitted. So I decided to paint them instead. Here is how I did it............

Here, I have one that has been sanded and cleaned thoroughly, and is ready for primer.

I primed it with Zinc Chromate and used a spot putty to fill in the pits.

One of the tricks I've learned when using a Metalized paint, is to have a very good undercoat. Metalizer paint shows everything. Now, I wanted these to be shiny, (I do like shiny things) :D Sooo, I painted them BLACK.... Yup..... black! and it's an enamel too.

Because enamel dries from the outside in, It's important to let these dry for a few weeks. The enamel must be "rock hard". Metalized paints are usually Lacquer. And Lacquers will gobble up the enamel.
Not wanting to wait 3 weeks, I pulled out my secret weapon......It's a food dehydrator! ;) Two days in this and I was ready to go!

Next, was to paint them. I used Rust-oleum Chrome. The first coat is very light! just a dusting... shot it at about 12 inches away. Then wait 15 minutes, and dust on a second coat. Wait 30 minutes. Lastly, add a smooth "wet coat" Set aside to dry.

I am happy with the results. I wanted to add this....... If you don't have a full set, try this link. They're not exact copies but close.

Also, if you are nice to Mark 42, he may be able to help you with a resin repo.

Looks greak ED. My 65 edinboro still has all of the original hardware. Rail ends, cleats, and even the original horn (I think it is original at least) Bow lights are original but have been painted and poorly might I add. You have given me some great ideas for when I do my restoration this winter.

Update................

Well, you know the old saying "when it rains it pours"

I got some good news, and some bad news about my restoration project.

Recently I ran into a major snag........ I got laid off from work. OK, I figured. now I can finish my boat ;) A day later, I found a part time job:).. Great! A few bucks to keep going.... The day after that I was offered a new full time job :D Whew...... didn't have to collect unemployment.
So, here I am working two jobs. Having the extra moola is great, but I haven't had any time to complete my boat project :( still doing what I can to move it foward, however it is going sloowly. Stay tuned fellas I'll get 'er done :D

Oh well, the job is the most important of the two anyway. The time to work on the boat will come...eventually!:D

I can imagine that you must be going crazy too judging by how close you were to dipping your Edinboro. Don't worry, the best striper fishing is in the fall up there, right?:) At least you have a good reason though, I have two pails of Seacast gathering dust in my garage...the only thing I'm waiting on is some minor fiberglass work.

Keep us up to date...Bob.

Hey, I haven't been around in a little while. Been really busy. Its rained just about every day for the past 3-4 weeks so i haven't been able to go on the boat. And when its nice the rivers 1/2 drained to get ready for the next storm...... It sucks.
Hope to be back on the water soon.

Hi guy,
Well...........I'm back! After a grueling summer of working night and day. Literally, months of eat and sleep...Whew glad that's over:)

Right now I'm gearing up to get back to my boat. I started to clean up the shop for a fresh start. I kinda need to figure out where I left off, what I had going, and prioritise what's next....... The last couple of evenings I've been restoring the plastic MFG side emblems.. I'll post some pics of that soon.

So, Stay tuned! Lots more to come! :D

Yeaa..
It's a cool wheel. I got three of them before I found one that I could restore. The old plastic doesn't stand the test of time well. It took several evenings of wet sanding, buffing and polishing to get it looking reasonable.
I mentioned in a earlier post, that the wheel was made by Det-Mar. Then called Detroit Marine. They where used on many boats. So, you'll have to hunt around .I just happened upon this one in the back lot of a boat yard.
Of coarse, there are the usual places like Criag's list and eBay. :)

Re: Restoring my MFG

Hi Guys
After getting the hull done, I just couldn't put back the beat-up plastic emblems. Here are some pics and a brief description on how I'm fixing 'em up.
P9210807-2.jpg

Because these are plastic, I used products designed just for it.
Everything was purchased at my local hobby shop. The small bottle is gap filling CA (superglue). The large bottle is called "kicker" which comes with a small spray nozzle. It speeds up the cure. CA does not cure well by itself.
Also, I got a sanding stick and a small dowel.
P9210808-1.jpg

With a dowel (a tooth pick will do) I put a drop of CA on the dent. Spray it with the accelerator. Repeat if needed. Build it up so you slightly overfill it. Then sand to shape.
P9210809-1.jpg

After a few evenings of filling and sanding. I sprayed them with gloss black paint. Again, Paint for plastic.. good ole Testors model paint!
P9210811-1.jpg

I found the best way to paint this type of plastic, is to apply 2 thin coats about 20 minutes apart. Then 45 minutes later apply a heaver wet coat. Let them sit for at least 2 days! Enamel takes a long time to dry. A full cure takes about 2 weeks
Now for the fun part..........
P9210812-1.jpg

I couldn't come up with a better way to do the white. So, I'm hand painting them. It's gonna take a while....... Get yourself a good brush. I'm using a 3/0 red sable. Oh! One word of caution!!! Don't attempt this when you've had a few cups of Coffee!!!!!!!!!
I'll be back when the're done!

Aha, the ol' Zap-a-gap. Good thinking, and the kicker smells good too. If you put them in the original location you'll have to realy be carefull around the docks.

Here they are gang!
Took quite a steady hand, and alot of holding my breath :D When the white is fully dry, I'll give them a coat of semi-gloss. It will tone them down a bit and add a little protection. Hopefully I can get them on my boat soon. I'll post some pics then.:)

I love the shiny shots of the new gelcoat. I have to ask the forbidden question, what kinda cash does it take to fund a project like this, roughly? I don't mean to be a buzzkill. I really have no idea.

Moon,
it depends,if you can get one thats in not to bad of shape to start with, and then if you do all the work your self,it's one thing but if you have to farm out the work it could get crazy!!
you are really doing it for your self, because you will never get out of it what you have in it .
