Hi Guys,
Nice weather is just around the corner, My boat is still covered, but not for long Last season, I couldn't do (afford) to do much. Being unemployed stinks!
I've been hired back by the people I worked for previously. However it's only part time. I'll know in a week or two, If it's going to be full time. Mannnn.... I hope so!
Be real nice to get a few extra bucks to buy the things I need to finish up my restoration.

Stay tuned... I'm thinking positive

Well...... Where do I start ?? Better yet, where do I pick up the pieces to move forward? With circumstances beyond my control, (no job) I've had to stop and start this project a few times.
This past spring, I was called back to work part time. Soon after, I went full time. Feeling confident, I when out and bought most of the stock to get going again.

Here are some pics of the work so far.

Finally .... got the new port side ski rack completed and installed

Here, is the back side of the fiberglass cockpit side. New rails were added and everything painted.

Next up, I was able to mount this side panel for the last time.

Lastly, I've added some 3M Di-Noc in Matte Rosewood. More on that when I get to the Starboard side.

I've started in on the starboard side. The inside of the hull had alot of pin holes in the glass work. So, I filled in most of what will be seen.

Painted up! Brushed on Easypoxy in Brightwork brown.

Here is the ski rack shelf roughed in. Hope to start putting the finish on this piece soon.

Well... coats of finish are going on the ski rack! With a day or more drying time, I decided to work on some "odds and ends" from my to do list. I finally got my steering wheel permentaly mounted. I had to grind down a Woodruff key before it would fit. Coated everything with Never-seeze and on it went! The modifications to the Teleflex system I did realy look good... Glad I did it!

Also, got the tilt/trim switch mounted.

Another item I got done, was the lower rub rail on the port side.

I scavenged the vinyl insert from a junk Niagara I spotted while driving up the coast. Of course, I asked the owner first. They wanted me to take the whole thing. But it was half buried in a tidal flat.
The insert was in rough shape, but I sanded it down which got most of the large gouges out. Cleaned up well. Gave it a good coat of 303 silicone. and on it went. I left it long for a few days, just to make sure it would'nt shrink.

All done! Even got on the "arrow ends" That I refinished soo long ago!

Started the starboard side trim. The trims are mounted with Butyl glazing tape running down their lenghts. Then the screws go through it. Makes for a nice water tight seal. Glazing tape is avaliable from most glass shops. Comes in many different sizes too.

I'll be able to finish this up as soon as the ski rack is installed....

Stay tuned... I'm gonna keep plugging away as long as I can!

That helm area looks so nice. Clean, organized, no crap, good looking wheel.

I switched to a telelflex and retained the original MFG wheel as well, but didn't grind the key: I was impatient and dropped in a loose 1/8" nut from the back of the OEM keyswitch that went to the original Johnson. However, it almost seems as though the taper on the wheel spindle holds just fine on its own. Wouldn't want to risk it without *some* form of a key in there though in case something bad might happen.

I really like your chrome steering box bezel. That really completes the look. I painted the teleflex bezel white on mine which was a huge improvement over black but I really chrome would look better and you did a nice job.

One thing that I had been meaning to ask you about was the MFG pennant. You have a photo labeled "pendant" which shows a pennant and I was wondering where you obtained yours.

Thanks for the kind words.....
I'm a chrome guy have been all my life, just gotta have it. The whole reason I chopped up my perfectly good Teleflex system was to use this chrome bezel

Way back in this thread I showed how I did it. Here's another pic of the basic idea.

About the MFG Pennant..... I just happened to a "Johnny on the spot" You might remember, the old MFG site that was run by Jim Cofflin several years ago..
I was looking for some information, so I called him. At that time, Jim was pretty worn out trying to maintain the site, and everything that went along with it. He indicated, he might want to sell off some of the items he accumulated.
Well..... long story short, I ended up buying everything he had collected The MFG burgee was amongst the items.

Thanks again for following along, It's taking me a whole lot longer than I every would have anticipated, but sooner or later I'll "get ur done"

I sent the dimentions to landscaping wiz 808 and he went to www.vintageboatsupply.com

they have them for $28.50 and are available in 12 different colors go to their site and click on flags , scroll down to "MFG '60S
it says they can either make it with pockets to slip over your antenna or the brass gromets.

seems to me the pockets wouldnt be such a good idea,the wind would just lift it of the antenna

The OEM MFG bow light (red/green) has a standard pennant / flag mast hole. The Pocket Style would slip over that and be retained by a ball top on the ones I have seen. Don't know if that is original or not but it sure looked that way!

Hi Guys,

Well I'm making some progress. A post or two ago I mentioned The 3M Di-noc vinyl I am using. Thought I'd post a bit more on it. A Lot of the late model MFGs had wood grain on them.

Here is a pic of some on the dash. (not my boat)

I thought I had a photo with the stuff that was on my boat... guess not. Anyway, I spent a good amount of time looking for as close a match as I could. Ordered a bunch of samples form several companies. Finally settled on 3M brand. In my research, I found it is the best for this type of application.

Here is a pic of Rosewood DI-NOC with a matte finish.It's a little crinkled right off the roll.

Here is how I applied it.

First a good cleaning with denatured alcohol.

Next

Sanded the area with 180 grit paper

Once I had a good smooth surface, I taped it off.

Although it was sanded smooth, it isn't smooth enough. The slightest imperfection will show. So, I sprayed on several coats of clear lacquer. Now this is smooth......

In order to post more of the application photos I'll need to start again.........

Here's more.....

I rough cut the piece I needed, and let it warm a bit in the sun. Laid out nicely.

The backside is printed 3M so you know it's not a cheap knock-off

Although this pic has a shadow, I'm pulling the release paper off as I put down the vinyl.

Next, I used a bondo spreader to work it down and into the corners

A cut at the corners, and it's starting to look good.

I trimmed it up with a steel yard stick and an Xacto knife. Here is the finished starboard side.

Hi Guys
The weather here in New England was splendid today! So, I decided to move the wood shop outdoors!
I was happy to start a project I have been wanting to do for some time.

My Edinboro and many others, have side compartments either side of the cockpit. MFG called them "ski racks" They lie behind the fiberglass side panels. They are a simple arrangement of plywood and a pine support rail. Mine were covered with a vinyl upholstery.
I pulled my fiberglass sides off for painting and noticed some dry rot. Although not real bad, I just couldn't bring myself to put them back in.
So, today was perfect to get new ones made. I got some Mahogany and went at it.

A simple matter of copying the original.

The narrow rail was a bit trickier to make. I made both sides using the same setups for each. My router table and a Dado blade in the table saw made easier work of it.

The port side is ready for varnish.

I'll be happy to help anyone wishing to do theirs.

do you happen to have the original wood pieces from the ski rack? I just bought my boat and the ski rack wood is completely rotted. I am planning to rebuild it would be much easier if I could find a template to start off with

Thanks for the kind words about my restoration. It's taken awhile but I'll get there. I went out back today, and yes indeed, I do still have the original ski racks. Must be your lucky day, almost put them to the trash last week! PM me, and we can set something up.

This one kinda goes out to EDC and woosterken, but any and all could speak up....

I have been looking at Fiberglassics, hope to see some sweet logo`s for my boat, hoping that mine was missing them. But the 1979 MFG only has white stickers on it. I was really looking forward to the shark logo!!! Oh well. Since I cant have the shark on the boat.... Where can I get one of the MFG pennants? I have not been able to find any in Iboats, or on any search.....

scroll down to the bottom, Mark 42 (auther of article) was able to make a mold for the shark!!
he put his e-mail in there he may still have some or be able to cut another set , now tthat the off season is comming.
the decal on your '79 was "MFG Caprise", the shark logo was from the '60s (but you can put what ever you want on there)
my '74 gypsy has the checker board logo.
ED already gave you the adddress for the pennet, check out my post # 131 above

Alright! I know that I will be getting that pennant! If the flag year is off thats no big deal to me, it still has the shark on it! I would like to keep the boat stock looking on the hull, because of the facts that MFG is no longer a company, and because I have gotten many people asking about the boat because its in such good condition!! On the inside of the boat, I would like to make a few upgrades to her, Maybe a new dash or just gauges. I would like to add a radio to it. And I have been looking at some of the LED lights to light the side walls and a little of the floor.
