Could a bad regulator cause these symptoms? I'm thinking the ign. sys. is running off the battery and the engine is dying when the battery voltage gets to low. Is that possible?

Battery is a completely separate system from the ignition.
Test your recirculation valves. If they get bad gas will accumulate behind the reeds in the intake manifold and cause an extreme rich condition on that cylinder. Sooted plug, excess fuel usage, horrible idle, dying constantly, hard to start.

Probably should have mentioned this before, but I forgot. #2 & #4 plugs were sooty while #1 & #3 looked normal. I noticed this before I changed the fuel pump.

Re: Screwed Again Looper 120 won't run

Well.......

I found this weekend that #3 had an erratic spark. I switched wiies and coils with no change on that cylinder. I switched back to my old PP and corrected the #3 spark issue. Engine still won't go. I am giving up as I think I just have a lemon that is unrepairable. Thanks to all for the ideas and help trying to get things going for me. I'm going to just part the thing out on ebay and get some of my $ back.

Alden sounds like you are still looking to electrical/ignition problems...............................and maybe you have one, but......

Have you checked to see if you are flooding it or getting to rich of a mix yet?? I havent seen you say you troubleshot that, and you have a lot of classic overly rich/flooding characteristics.............hard to start, bogs, gas sheen on the water, fuel on the plugs, lots of carbon, runs a bit longer with the high idle lever up.....just to name a few.

I think parting this thing out is a mistake. You HAVE a solid motor that has developed a problem. I wouldnt part it out unless the compression #'s were crappy....................What are they anyhow? Its possible if they are low or uneven enough it won't start.

true that the battery charging system is isolated from the ignition, but an open diode can do funny things...disconnect the rectifier from the stator & see what happens.

I don't know what to do. It starts now, but when I give it gas in gear it bogs and stalls. My girlfriend will dump me if I spend too much more time screwing with this thing.

The carbs are clean, I've tried a remote tank, the bulb works, and there are no air leaks. I'm getting classic broke motor burn out.

If I had a penny for each word my iboats friends have typed trying to help me over the last 2 years, I could buy twin e-tecs.

I asked around if the regulator was supposed to look like it had crystals or beads in it and was told no, so I thought maybe mine was bad. I bought a new one and it looks just like my old one so I didn't bother installing it.

So it starts, then stalls upon acceleration?

How much checking have you done on you fuel lines. Check for some of these.
1) Restriction of fuel tank vent or hose
2) Restriction somewhere in the fuel system
3) Faulty anti-syphon valve
4) Clogged fuel filter / pick up tube
5) Air leak somewhere.

I know you tried a remote tank......but do you have a different hose/primer bulb assembly to try?

Is your idle set correctly? low idle can cause it to stall.

Pony,

I replaced the fuel lines around the bulb. It primes fine and holds it.

I can't even accelerate before it bogs and stalls.

Walker mentioned the recirculation valves, but I can't find them. The manual shows how to test and clean them, but I don't know where they are.

It does seem like it's getting to much gas. Yes, the idle is set right.

You may have to take the carbs or at least the carb covers off to get to them. You can see the small hoses that run to them though.

I think one is behind the VRO pump, so that would have to moved out of the way.

relax...see the motor...be the motor... 8)

ok, you put it in gear...it idles along fine no problem? Give it gas and it just dies? Doesn't go a few seconds, start to wind up, then die?

First thought...spark advance...needs to start before the throttle plates open.

Second thought...leaky primer valve...

Third thought...fuel pump leaking into the vacuum line, flooding the bottom cyl (is that possible with this version of VRO pump?)

Is the spark on #3 still erotic?

hang in there.

Engine just dies when I increase at all off idle. I checked the spark advance when I linc/sync'd for the eighth time.

The #3 spark is no longer erotic:'(

earlier you said "...it bogs when I give it gas in gear..." - which suggests fuel...but when that happens, it's like you can feel it trying to go - and sometimes backing down the throttle keeps it running...

but if it just up and dies when you advance the throttle...is there any chance at all of it not being fuel, but electrical, like a short in the control box grounding out the ignition?

Have you tried it in gear on the muffs, with no load? Don't rev it too much, just past idle. Long shot, I know...

I remember a scenario from a couple years ago like jtexas said..it was a little break in a wire that shorted against..I think..the advance plate as it moved when giving it some throttle, shutting down the motor. That guy had the rope around his neck and was ready to step off the chair too.Check all the wiring near any moving parts and see.

It's at the mooring so I raised the engine just high enough so it would still get water and had the same problem.

I've looked but have not found any wire issues. I'm staying on my chair.

Does it just bog and die or does it shut off like you turned the key off? (Harker & Jtexas may be on to something)

Have you tried reving it up with just the carbs? Just advance the roller by hand. If that works then disconnect the linkage and while it's ideling advance the timer base by itself.
