Re: So what have YOU done?

Catfish1,
That name doesn't ring a bell right off. Funny you mention Yankton, because I live closer to Yankton than to Sioux Falls. Just put SF in the profile so folks would relate to my location. I actually live just outside of the town to the east of Yankton, and you can probably see why I didn't use THAT township name (especially with the discussions here, as of late). You know what town I mean ;)

The packing plant you're thinking of in SF is probably John Morrell. I actually grew up in Iowa and worked at a small packing plant outside of Estherville, Ia, which also became a John Morrell in later years.

You're right about the jobs and cost of living in these parts though.... did I mention the hunting and fishing, as well? :D

Kenny KenCan:
I know the Connetquot real well. During the summers we would row down to Vanderbilts, get tanked on Gin and Tonics then attempt to row back. It got old after the third time. Fortuanately our coxswain didn't drink, and managed to get us home in one piece.

I kind of miss Long Island in the Spring, Summer and early fall. (But I guess I didn't miss much this year)

The Tunnels are pretty cool at Dowling. Legend as it they were used by Dutch Schultz to hid and move bootleg booze.

BTW: Did you know that Dowling won the Dad Vail National Championship in 2002? They broke Temple University's 13 year winning streak. Almost did it again this year but came up short. Not bad for a little rinky-dink school.

Re: So what have YOU done?

yes john morrel! jj hows the fishing? that is one of my concerns about moving. (that, and the lack of jobs in the yankton area)the only fishing i've done is on the james river for carp & cats. my mother owns a 400 acre farm 20miles north of yankton and nobody living on it!

Kilgore,

Dutch Schultz did use those tunnels for rum running back in the day's of proabition.

For that matter, there was the three mansions there (Idle Hour, which is now Dowling, Peperidge Hall, which burnt down in 1948, and the Bourne Estate, which was LaSalle Military Acadamy, but is now St. John's University) that were all used for bootlegging.

Those tunnels used to access the river, and they would just drive their boats, laden with booze, with the cops in hot pusuit, and duck into them tunnels, where they would unload and distribute it.

And, if you were to go to the Wharf today, you find that the same bartenders are still there!!

I knew about the Dad Vail National Championship in 2002, but I didn't know that they broke Temple's record... GOOD JOB !

I still live in the house I grew up in, as my parents have retired to NH, I inhereted the family homestead, off of Vanderbilt Blvd.

Kenny

Re: So what have YOU done?

Catfish,
I hear that some monster flathead have been getting pulled out of the Jim. One was in the paper last week or so, and it went 40-50 lbs, if memory serves. Lewis & Clark is still nicknamed the "dead sea" by many locals, but a guy can stumble across a few smallies and eyes trolling divers near the mennonite colony.

HINT: Do NOT stop to talk to the boy that fishes at the colony with a cane pole! OMG, I felt bad for the lad, he was having a heck of a time getting out to where the fish were with that homeade pole, so I thought I'd give him an extra rod and reel that I don't use much anymore. Soon as I stopped the boat, nearly 10 feet from shore, 2 real husky fellas came out a hollerin at me, and one of them had a 2x4 in his hand. So much for "do unto others...". :D

I've had some real good luck at Ft Randall with numbers, and at Ft Thompson for size; I just can't get the numbers and the size on the same day  Been up to the glaciers a few times, but way too far to drive for what you get once you're there.

Pheasants are EVERYWHERE though...3 months and counting ;)

Re: So what have YOU done?

As I recall the only way to get to Nofolk Nebraska by air was via a Farmer's field in Yankton. You had to stop there and drop off the mail coming from the Twin cities.

Had to go there a few times and remember the young pilots with happy meal bags flying me in on little turbo props.

Farmer/mailman runs out, grabs mail, waves bye-bye- and then back in the air to land on like the highway in Nofolk.

Man it sure is a small world!

Re: So what have YOU done?

When midwesterners ask me where I'm from, I say Yankton, or "just outside Yankton". When on a national level, no one has heard of Yankton, so I say Sioux Falls. ;)

Re: So what have YOU done?

I started out real young, around 7 - 9, my Dad had an Electrical business, and he'd put me in the attic to pull wires, and feed the wires in the holes, fetch tools, etc. Like most young guys I had a small neighborhood yard cutting jobs, (Come to think of it, I'm back doing that again too) I worked as a life guard in Saudi Arabia at 12 yoa, under supervision of course.
In high School, I was the Janitor. After Graduation went to trade school became an Electrician, also worked as a Lineman. Mostly did the bull work! Went to the Oilfield, More Bull Work! Drove a truck for a Hot Shot service. Went back to Electrical work. When Electrical jobs were short, I worked as a Scaffold builder, a Welder, Pipe fitter, Iorn worker, Rodbuster, Insulator (was not crazy about insulating but I'd have to be starving before I'd ever do Boilermaker work again, just too big to crawl through them small tower trays). Worked as a Bouncer at night (had to hide it from Dad though, he didn't want me working in a Bar). Some Bodyguarding. A Friend signed me up as a Reserve Police Officer, and I ended up being Hired Full time just over 15 years ago. Still here, and I still pull some wire sometimes, and Mow Yards, so I guess I am just going in a circle. What ever it takes to pay the bills.

GodsBeast
