Re: Spearfishing Anyone?

Got a neat trick for recovering a lobster that was too quick for you and disappeared into the rocks...

Take a brand new cotton string-mop head with you when you dive. Hold the end that attaches to the handle in your dominant hand, and the loose end bunched up in the other. Place the bunched up loose end at the opening where the lobster disappeared and shove the mop head in as you release the bunched up end. Immediately start twisting the mop around quickly in one direction. If it's within reach of the mophead, you'll tangle the lobster up in it. You'll feel the lobster in it when it works (about 50/50).[/QUOT

Thanks my friend!....(born Brooklyn, now a Peach).

Are ya' tryin' to get me thrown in jail here in FL?

we used mop heads in the 60's, use them now and go to jail. bully net or tickle stick and net are the only legal methods in monroe county.

WOW!!!:confused::facepalm:

Illegal to use a mophead for lobster... Need a fishing license in the ocean... Man, Am I actually getting old???... (er)

You guys were both involved in the thread last year when I nearly "had a cow" over learning about the need for a fishing licence on the ocean. Still havn't gotten over that one, yet. Now you guys are hitting me with this lobster mop poaching horror story... What next??? Wait, let's see... Uh, you can only catch a mako on 10lb test; and you cannot use a wire leader (except for the third sunday of months begining with the letter A; but only if it falls on a full moon.)

That's really cool that you used to use the mophead trick, Sam. A lot of people think I'm crazy when I tell them about that.

Yes we also have the lionfish problem. I did a lot of spearfishing when I was young,Everyday after school.Sure miss it.

It depends on where and how, Most shoot two, some shoot three. I am building one now that is going to N Carolina that will shoot four with a 3/8 inch 60 long spear.

Nice, kahuna. I haven't mastered a Biller 32 Special at 5 yards yet. Seems like anything further the fish hear the click and make a sudden dart. I suppose that's where more expierence comes into play. Is there a good book you reccommend?

Sad to hear you can't enjoy spearfishing anymore, island mike. A few people tearing up a reef can ruin it for everybody. Here we fish around submerged rocks and ledges and I do my best to never touch a reef.

What is your location? Chances are I may have fished your area.

I am familuar with Bonaire, Mike, but have never been there. We did take a large vessel to Venezuela once for some 25cent.

My biggest fish? A 15lb black drum.

I dove bonaire back in the eighties. When did spearfishing get banned?

It was me that said tuna cheeks!!!:D MMMmmmmmm!!!:p If you like soy sauce on it, try Miso Tamari. OH MY GOOD LORD!!!;) It's bottled by Great Eastern Foods. Google it. Real Miso Tamari is a by-product of making miso (Fermented soybeans). Each 100lbs of miso yeilds only 2 ounces of tamari... It is Black Gold!!! I buy it by the case on-line. A case lasts me a couple of years. I take one bottle out of the case and date it. I put it away in a china cabinette. I've been doing this for about 13 years now. I've got 5 dated bottles. It gets better with age. When the first one is 20 years old, I'll open it. You've gotta try this stuff!!! Use it VERY sparingly... It's incredibly delicious, but it can be outrageously overpowering if you use too much. Picture soysauce, about a thousand times stronger, and more flavorful.

Re: Spearfishing Anyone?

Looks like we are headed out for some more spearfishing today. I may have to stay on deck as a lookout. Sucks being the captain sometimes. Everybody gets to catch fish, drink adult beverages till they act like fools (no problem with me what they do), spearfish, and no worries.

But....next week we are headed out for an allnighter of Swardfishing. The owner/friend will captain his own Hatteras and I'm designated for the first hookup! Beware fishes....here I come.

Ya see, sasto... Kharma. Designated for the first hook. That's awesome. You're always helping others. You put others before yourself as a way of life. It's nice when the good stuff comes back.:) Little things like that have always meant a lot to me. Have a GREAT time, my friend!!!

Kinda, veritas honus. I've lived a good life that could never be repeated. The trials along the way just made me stronger. Helping others and seeing them happy is somewhat of a selfish thing....I love it!

We never made it spearfishing yesterday. Our group had a very active week and we decided to postpone it.

Thanks for the link, Kahuna. Nice! I hooked up with a professional yesterday and hope to take him out as soon as our schedules meet. I'll pay for the fuel, food, drinks....whatever it takes to make me better and safer at this sport.

Funny you say that. Another thing we have in common. I learned as a child that you can't be truely happy unless those around you are happy. So I often wondered as a child... At what point is that fine line crossed between selflessness and selfishness (not in those words, though.);)

Good question, veritas honus.

I have some photos to post but my newer puter is down at the moment. That ocean is way too knarley to go out in now! After Irene passes thru the fishing should be good here. We have spotted several sea turtles here in the river. Even they know better than to be out there in the ocean.

We learn a lot from animals. Sea turtles live about 150 years. They're not mindless creatures.:)

Looking forward to your photos.

The fishes is gonna be HUNGRY when Irene goes away!!!:D

Yup, veritas honus, I guess your right. After Irene passed I haven't seen a turtle since. We did find one dead, maybe a boat hit her.

While cleaning a load of crustations off the bottom of a boat yesterday, a school of sheepshead arrived for a meal. Couple of them very big. They were right in my face. Critters wouldn't leave me alone. If I would have had a gun there would have been a couple on the grill.

We live and learn.;) My small pneumatic gun is perfect for such a situation. You can have it loaded and aimed in just a few seconds. I never used it in that situation, though. The water in New york is not exactly known for it's visibility. At the marinas, even more so. As many beautiful fish as I've seen while at a few different marinas, I never would have taken the chance of using a speargun at any of them.

If you come across a good deal on a small pneumatic, you may want to grab it.
