Re: Starcraft SS Specific Transom Replacement Questions: My Rebuild Project

Well some good news and some bad news.

Good news is the epoxy set very well and everything is tight. The bad news is my clamp idea had a major flaw. The 2x4's also laminated to the transom board. When removing them they pulled big chunks out of the top layer of the plywood on one side. I am not starting this over and feel this is nothing more than a cosmetic issue. I plan on running a barrier around the edge of the board and filling the holes with epoxy to level them out. Then I will sand and paint the epoxy. I had to paint it anyway as it will be exposed to the sun. More than likely I will not have enough epoxy now though. I'll have to order another batch.

If I were to do it again I'd run a sheet of foil along the 2x4's between them and the transom wood. Oh well. You live and you learn. Everything was going so smoothly up to this point I had to hit a snag somewhere.

Just going to do some odds and end thru the week until my epoxy gets here. I may get around to drilling the transom holes today. We'll see how it goes.

To late, but I had the same problem but I used foam as a backing :p

I then had the bright idea to use wax paper, stuff works great and comes off with out any issue!

I did the final coat on my transom last night and put wax paper over the whole thing, mostly to prevent dripping, and to help fill in voids

Yeah that was a DUH! moment for me. I got all the void filled in very well and the whole thing was smooth and as if it never happened. Just took bit of extra resin.

All of my painting of the white is 99% done. I have to go back and touch up a few spot but overall mostly done. I'm going to put everything back together and pack the boat up for the winter. I'll contemplate what I'm going to do about the design and everything else during the off season. It's not something that needs to be done now or anytime in order to take it out on the water. At this point though I am just FED UP with painting. It was a lot of work and I'm tired of it.

Yeah, I was just lucky I had the foam available

I would of used plywood if it was not sitting there (used as a backing to and used two outboards, and an air compressor to press the two halfs while epoxy dried)

I had to break the foam apart, then took my palm sander to what was left.

I can still see the brand name in the epoxy a little :)

The wax paper worked great, pealed off easly, left a nice satin finish in the epoxy.

Made it so I could do all sides at once with very little beading

Re: Starcraft SS Specific Transom Replacement Questions: My Rebuild Project

After taking several days off I was able to round up some more motivation to work in the cold. It was actually pretty decent temps today. Not warm enough to paint but enough to get other things done.

Fuel tank back in
Battery in
Motor Hung
Misc things finished up

She runs again :D

I am about 85% done. Just need to finish the paint scheme and a few other misc things here and there.

I managed to relocate the fuel tank a little leaving me enough room to slide a spare 5gal can next to it. Have to pull the battery tray that's in there and set my box in and organize the wiring a bit. I'd like to install some bud bars to really clean it up.

Well, guess I'll update here a little. She's ready to splash. I abandoned the painting for the time being. I'm just going to leave her all white. I got some Burgundy color boat numbers and figured I'll call it a day on that until maybe the end of the season. The warm weather really snuck up on me. Tomorrow might be the big day.

Hopefully a burgundy bimini will be in the near future and it'll tie all the colors together. I kind of like the all white. Looks a lot cleaner.

Splash successful. And not even a drop of water in the bilge :p Still have a few wiring gremlins I need to figure out too.

Dry bilge in a tinny? You know the glasser guys won't believe you. Those pesky reevits!. But good work pays off in the end, sje. As jasonoutside likes to say "STARCRAFT IN THE WATER"

Play with the SS this summer (after you get the electrics right) and finish her up when the season is over. Good news about a dry splash. buddy.

Mine didn't leak when I bought it, and certainly doesn't leak now (Gluvit added for assurance).

Congrats sje.

Re: Starcraft SS Specific Transom Replacement Questions: My Rebuild Project

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm very excited to be back out on the water.

It was a bad electrical day all around yesterday for some reason. Motor and everything worked great. It all started when i hooked the trailer to the truck and none of the lights worked. Following that fiasco my bilge circuit and navigation lights seem to be dead as well. I didn't spend too much time messing with any of it. My initial thought is to check my grounds. After that I'm guessing the breakers and then it's a whole rewire if that doesn't fix it.

I'll blame it on the solar flares. :p

Everything is fixed. Trailer lights magically started working (maybe i didn't have a good connection). Bilge/Navigation light circuit had a quick connect come loose off the back of a breaker.

Took it out yesterday and had the total opposite of my initial splash. The bilge was FULL of water. Turns out a rivet on the bottom popped out. I drilled it out today and am letting it dry then I'll stick a new one in. Always something. :(

Got the new Bimini in today and installed. Went w/ the 54" height. It's perfect. I am 6'1" and can walk around with a got 4" or more clearance above my head.

Re: Starcraft SS Specific Transom Replacement Questions: My Rebuild Project

just read through your transom replacement and paint job...it looks good. sounds like it took longer than you thought, but it is worth it in the end. Do you have any finished pics of the trim that you had mocked up and of the transom?

Thanks
