At long last, the painting has begun! Just did the little front deck to see how it looks. Overall very happy with the outcome. The only issue I had was that it seemed to go on pretty thin, will probably do 2-3 coats, because i want it to last.

Re: Started rolling on some rustoleum today

You bet, hopefully I'll be able to get the rest of prepped and ready for paint by next weekend.
ps: for those who have used this, I bought gloss white, but now I am thinking I will want the semi-gloss once i get it out on the water (glare and what not). If anyone has any opinions, speak up so I can buy some semi-gloss for the last coat, because I will need more anyway, and I have a $75 Lowes gift card :).

definitely semi, i would not use white at all. it just glares too much.
this one is an off white, kind of egg shell, but in the sun looks white.

Well finally got the painting done! Overall I am very happy with how it turned out. The rustoleum was really easy to apply and leveled great. My only question is: how long should I let it sit to fully cure? I don't want to compromise it by using it before it's cured. Here's a few pics. The next step is carpet and then I can reinstall the console/controls.

Carpet....ewwww. Carpet is a good setup to replace your floor again. I would use the same rustoleum with some fine white sand for grip mixed in the paint for grip.

Nice! Keep the pictures coming.

It's cured when you can't smell the fumes anymore. It can take months without catalyst.

WOW  !!! I live in FL and hopefully I will be back on the water faster than that if possible. But I really don't want to mess it up. Is there anything I can do to make it cure faster?

About the floor, I considered using something like you guys have suggested but settled on carpet because it will hide the imperfections in the floor job that the PO did. This boat is not one that I plan on keeping forever. The work I'm doing here is just to make it usable for a season or two as I'm a student that will probably sell/trade it down when I move away from home. I do appreciate the concern though :).

The rough texture of said alternatives will also hide imperfections. Let us know how it goes and post pics of the floor when your done..

we used the rustoleum with the non skid additive on a boat last summer and i agree it hides imperfections pretty well. it won't hide everything but it breaks up the surface enough that most imperfections just look like part of the non skid. and so far it has held up to being pressure washed at the car wash after every trip. it's cheap to try and if you don't like it you can always put carpet down over it.

I plan on laying down some non-skid on the casting decks eventually as I can already tell they are going to be super-slippery :D. I really doubt that the stuff is going to hide some of the issues though.

BTW Marquette, any advice on cure time? I want mine to be really durable like yours.

Re: Started rolling on some rustoleum today

You can help it cure by getting some heat lamps on it or some other source of heat to "bake" the paint. Our Polyurethane takes 14 days to cure without moisture or temp issues for hardwood floors ( 3 coats ) on average. The paint is cured when all the solvents have been released from the paint.

Essentially what happens is the paint cures from the bottom to the surface as the solvents escape ( they have to go somewhere! ).

Thanks for the info!

Rustoleum will take anywhere from 3-4 weeks to FULLY cure.

This is what rustoleum told me when i asked.

I assume you're talking about the marine topside stuff that I used, or is there little difference between it and the regular stuff? I think I'll give it about a month or so, as it's still a little chilly 'round these parts :D.

This was for their professional series paint.
but as stated, theres no catalyst so its going to be the same regardless.
