Re: Sticky rings??

OK...Tomorrow will be the final day.. I have to install electronics and carbs.
I am not concerned with the timing because I see now everything will go back to where it was. From fly wheel on key way to stator on linkage, If I have trouble then I will worry about it.

I intend on starting her on a 25-1 mix out of a 6 gallon tank. I have a 33 gallon tank with an unknown amount of mixed fuel in it, I will be draining it/measuring it and refilling it with a 25-1 mixture. I am hoping to take her out on the river Tuesday or Wednesday to give her a good start on break-in.

Question
1. What should be my starting procedure.
2. What should I do to get her to temperature so I can re-torque the heads and PW

Wish me luck and With all your guy’s help Im feeling pretty sure she’s gunna run just fine

Re: Sticky rings??

looks good hotrod,
i got the carbs clean and will install them wendsday. i will disconect the vro. actualy the carbs didnt look bad at all. i checked for spark and all 4 cylinders are firing.
so , i should have spark, compression and hophefully gas. If i sealed the crankcase good.
i'm positive that we will have these moters running by the end of the week.
i really liked wrenching on this v4 and after this motor runs the way it should i'm gonna go find a other one.
yes outboard wrenhing is fun and addictive.
good luck hotrod this week.
my thougts are with you, haha

reeldutch

Re: Sticky rings??

Im just about there. 1 hold up tho.. Im having a hard time finding exactly where the starter solenoid goes. and what goes on the ground screw on the bottom bypass plate, see I mixed up the left and right, so it's hgard to tell I also have a 4" ss wire(ground) that I forget where it came from. going to look thru manual right now and see what i can find.

(EDIT) OK swapped out plates and got that all straighted out.

Re: Sticky rings??

OK. all done. tried firering her up and I have no spark. A few things in the pic you will see one connector, my 'X'wrench had that unpluged when he diconnected the VRO. also there are 2 wires hanging down in the pic . a black and a tan both come out of a 3 way splice. the black and tan leading out of the splice are hooked up but the black and tan coming back out of the splice are cut.. I kinda remember cutting these because the connector was bad but I forget where they go and I see no place for them. I am happy motor did turn over nicely..

There was a ground wire/connector on the box that holds the coils wires. that i set on the bolt that holds the box to the block.

KIll switch is fine, checked all fuses (1) I am at a lose here??

Just a note, prior to rebuild I had no problem, but I was working on my fuel gauge and did wind up blowing the fuse at the motor. never changed it up untill now, could I have blow something else also?
Re: Sticky rings??

Can't really tell hotrod....but the two wires in the schematic connects to the lead from the VRO oil reservoir (this is for the low reservoir level alarm). The lead from the reservoir looks like a black lamp cord. One of the leads goes to ground on the engine block and the other to the tan lead in the engine harness. Can't tell from the picture where the black lead is coming from.

Re: Sticky rings??

All the leads coming from the key sw should be in the harnes bundle....that's the big red connector. Is this a separate wire you have there coming from the key???

Re: Sticky rings??

No it's coming out of the larger harness. the one in the schematic ( that you said you cant tell where it's coming from) shows the black coming from the key

Re: Sticky rings??

OK.....ya' should have one black with maybe a yellow stripe...wait a minute....had to check the drawing....still can't tell....anyways...one black goes to the power pack(s) and the other to ground. This is the kill circuit that stops the engine and provides ground in the control box. The tan wire is probably the oil reservoir alarm. Best I can figure without being there. :)

Re: Sticky rings??

OK see updated schematic. All the black wires are going where they need to, the One hanging does show ground, meaning it will light my test light when other end on positive.

Did unplug harness and jump out starter with yellow/red wire. still no spark. so switch is ok.

Re: Sticky rings??

Have been running some trouble shooting with the ohm meter, mostly I have no clue or understanding of what I doing. right now Im just about done.. at one point I did see a faint spark .... would hate to have to take her to the shop for an 800$ repair that i could have done myself. will go look for a sprk indicator.. and hook that up to be sure.
Have read alot on shift kill switch but have not been able to find it. if mine is not in nuetral nothing will happen..

So when is best for you? :) ;)

Anyway to check spark with a volt meter? cant find a spark indicator

OK im going with "I have spark"!!! dis hard to tell outside and can't find an indicator but I did see a few zaps.. maybe my timing is out of wack, when i rotate my fly wheel so the top right piston is at it highest point, my pionter is on TDC. when i keep going and bring it back to it's highest point..again the pionter is on TDC. is that right?
