Re: Tell me why this idea is stupid

Ditto!!!! The floor to hull joint is a structural element that does not need to be Billy Bob'd back together. Under stress your boat will flex, the joint will fail, and you will be swimming, if you're lucky. But if you are bent on this foolishness then by all means go ahead.

Hey, I wouldn't call it foolishness. That's just being harsh. The guy is being creative. Foolishness would be to have already done this and then ask if it was a good idea ;)

Nothing new happens when you do nothing but the same as everyone else. Creativity inspires and invokes new ideas, and new ideas - good or bad, are the source of innovation.

Would Glastron offer lifetime warranties on their hulls if they still hand laid them?

You are correct and I apologize for that but the name of the post is "Tell me why this is stupid".

Re: Tell me why this idea is stupid

im going to use old life jackets for floation. each one holds 200 lbs....if your boat is 1500 lbs u need 8.....4 in each side!

Oops - Life jackets are typically designed to float up to 200 lbs of somewhat bouyant human body. I would think you need to calculate the water displacement of a life jacket in order to determine how many life jackets might suffice as flotation for non-bouyant weight like a 1500 lb. dense fiberglass hull. Of course, seldom does a swamped boat lose all it's bouyancy as there is nearly always trapped air space, but still, I think your calculations may be a bit off.

life jackets only have about 40 lbs of buoyancy, the rest is the body's natural buoyancy

I don't thinks it's stupid and it could be made to work, I just think doing a good job in a more traditional method would be easier and last longer than anyone will want the boat.

Like others I think you'd run into broken screws or stripped holes if there was much flexing unless you put in a huge number of them, but it could be engineered to work.

The other thing that may be a problem is sealing the deck now that there is a seam all the way around it. You may end up with far more water under it, resulting in more of a chance of having problems.

While I would be really nervous about the flexing issue, this possibly could work with enough anchoring hardware. Instead of screws that will eventually loosen, I would use stainless tee nuts epoxied into the flange and run 316 stainless hex nuts thru epoxy filled and redrilled holes in the deck with lock washers. That way you can remove it as many times as you want without weakening the deck or the flange.

The hex nuts would withstand alot more flexing torque than screws.

If you're into new and different designs, I suggest you search this forum for ping pong balls and soda bottles as alternative flotation devices.

You want a removable floor to inspect foam and remove it so you don't have rot issues. Its a means to an end, but there may be better.

I think this may be the final answer - the boat already has some amount of foam outside the under deck area (some under gunnels, and some in the plywood box sections in the rear near the transom. I was already thinking about leaving out the front livewell/cooler - so I could put quite a lot of foam there in the bow, I can also fill the console section, and possibly add some cavity sections under the cap near the transom.

Just get rid of the reasonably small amount of foam that is in the hull.

Now it's on to stringers... looks like they're rotted.

The best way to do it as you suggested would be to not use the flange that's in the hull right now, but make a new one and have it attached to the floor and set the whole thing in place so it gets lined up correctly.

It's common to glass nuts in a laminte for a solid anchor and then go big enough that strength isn't an issue.

If your serious about doing it I can show you how to make it work, but it'll take a great deal of typing and a few drawings to explain it all and I'm too lazy to do it for the sake of conversation.

I might ask later - but right now I'm just thinking a regular old fiberglassed deck, just getting the foam out from under the deck completely.

Re: Tell me why this idea is stupid

I'd think twice about getting rid of the foam under the deck, and here's why:

Once you get that boat on the water, you're going to notice that it is a real slapper in a decent chop.

Mine, like yours, had rotten floors and stringers, but I used the boat anyhow for one season, before I junked it. I noticed that the hull flexed enough in medium chop that I could feel it through the deck. I suspect that the closed-cell foam in the outer hollows in the hull goes a long way toward preventing what was an uncomfortable feeling.

The damping effect of the foam tends to keep the outer hull from doing too much flexing in chop. At least, that's my theory about that boat.

As I've said before, the design is pretty marginal, and was built as a low-cost entry-level boat. I think you'd regret losing that foam.

The foam that is currently in it isn't poured foam - it's just loose 4"x4"x2' blocks crammed in.

At worst I'd relocate it, but I haven't decided exactly what to do for sure at this point.

I don't thinks it's stupid and it could be made to work.....

You can get a size 18 women into a size 10 dress also if you try hard enough but that don't mean you are supposed to!

I wasn't trying to castigate you for your comment, he did open himself up for criticism the way he worded his topic...I'm just not a big fan of people being slighted on forums, especially ones with a general member base that I hold in high regard. I'm a member at another forum and I chose this forum for the same reason I chose that one. Civility. I hope I don't come across as a prima donna. ;)

You put the size 18 woman into a size 10 dress by putting her on a diet and that's on the way to a size 6, every body wins.

LMAO
I say ewwwwwwww to the size 18 in the first place but give her a hell of a pat on the back for getting to 10, if she gets to 6 she deserves a round of applause!
