It's been a hot summer for sure, was a warm winter also. Lake St. Clair never froze over!!! I've never seen that before.

We'll be out in the Scamp, she's done, of course SWMBO has a work list that's likely to kill off any fishing expedition. Lots of little details are what makes a boat, and also eats up a ton of time. Looking good Bruce. Good luck in the mountains, don't let the mountain lions bite!

I keep hearing about a cabin in the mountains b2. I built quite a few of these a few years ago while in CO. It sure was fun.





Stay cool up there while we have our heatstrokes. lol.

Do you have any extra parking at the 'Ship o'the Mountains'? Maybe we could have a southern Tin Meet at the Cabin???? ha ha

2 acres of parking. just no water nearby....even our creek has dried up. it's about a 3 hr drive to nearest "real" water (Caballo and Elephant Butte lakes), up and over the 9000' crest of the mountains. no mt lions (there is at least one that lives on ridge above us as we've found hair and scat) but our dogs had fun playing Maximum Ratcatcher. heat situ has us looking at another 1.8 acre place in a north facing slot canyon, direct sun only for a couple of hours and that's heavily shaded, plus a stream and big reliable spring. cheap enough we could buy it for about half the price of a new SS18.....i'll post up some pics once i get em uploaded.

back to work on the Holiday....not much done, just getting the transom final fitting and holes done. i did hit one big snag and hope someone has ideas. when i cut the holes for splashwell drains, they came out too low in the splashwell, so that lower lip of drain will intersect splashwell skin. i'm going to ditch the nylon drains and get some brass ones since they're thinner, but does anyone have any ideas on what to do?

any reason i couldn't run the transducer wires out through the splashwell drains instead of over the top of the transom?

i've seen mention of some folks having issues with the pink foam squeaking under their floorboards. any suggestions on how to prevent/cure this?

B - go with the brass or AL drain tubes. I like the AL because they don't turn green and AL to AL is less chance of corrosion. When they're squeezed down they rest above the surface just by the thickness of the tube, give or take a skooch. The 5200 between the SW and transom will still seal. I ran my transducer wire through the drain tube. I figured no extra water leakage and better protection than over the top,.

So wait, your splashwell is already in place eh?

On the foam board - mine was super squeeky! And then, it just kinda went away which was cool! Your mileage may vary though.

I forgot to say that I haven't heard any squeaks in my foam. Maybe I'm deaf in one ear and can't hear with the other. Or just lucky. I seem to remember that LakeLover put some plastic sheeting between the floor and foam.

Jas--i never pulled splashwell in the first place. it's not screwed to transom yet, or holes for screws even drilled, so i am going to try to bow it down a tiny bit there. i'll super saturate the holes with epoxy so it's not Doom if some water gets around the lip of the drain, but..... i'll start by ordering the alum drains GA suggested.

i'm thinking about putting a drop or 2 of sillycone or 5200 between each 2 adjacent hunks of foam and between foam and alum, but would welcome any additional/alternate ideas anyone has.

I actually prefer to have the drain tube at/below the splashwell - that way she drains completely eh.

JB---no kidding. firewood is free and biggest problem with the hot tub is getting it TOO hot....we saw 123 degrees once. had to add cold water before we could soak.

Nice cabin you got there B2. I used the pink foam on my 16' SS and have not had any squeak issues. I did overstuff about a 1/2" and squeezed it down with the floor.

Jas is right on with the drain. Push that splashwell down a little so that drain area is the low spot.

Yah, a lot of times I see the drain tubes sitting an inch or two above the splashwell. That doesn't make any sense at all ya know?

Same for the bilge drain plug. My FireFlite's was a good inch above the top of the deck..... The SC's bilge drain holes are both better, but being an AL tube that was welded, their high too...

Agreed, I actually drilled out a new drain on the Islander. I couldn't figure why I needed 5" of water in the bilge befor it starts to drain.

Jas, do you have any decent pics of that extra bilge drain? i'm getting tired of having to put a cinderblock under the trailer jack when it looks like rain. not that this is a frequent problem here.....but we get all our 12" or so of rain a year in 1-2 months

Yah sure man. You can see here the thru hull off high to the starboard side was the factory bilge drain. The one low at the center is the new one I made. The original is now set to be my fish box drain.

thanks Jas. dang, that original is really high, what were they thinking?

i dunno how y'all who make huge progress on your boat do it. seems like my ratio is about 3 hours of stare-n-think time for every hour of actual work. was out there for 5 hrs last night and all i got done was screwing down the step pads and running the wires from console to bow. oh, and got the lower brace for swim step cut out and semi fitted; doing the critical hole in transom for it tonight. pix manana!

i did figure out sevl ideas to beef the structure of boat.....boxing the gunwales (only requires flat bottom and some angle to tie it to hull sides, and i still have lots of alum from the Lone Star) and adding 2 more knee braces tied into the stringers, plus boxing bow area (this is more to hold flotation in place but i realized that it would also help to stiffen the structure). we'll see whether i follow through on these ideas. knee braces will be easy and are a no-brainer since i eventually hope to hang a 4 stroke off the transom and take it places where boat may get semi airborne.

finally, i semi decided to ditch the stair to access bow and instead make a cover/step over an 18" high fuel tank that will be partly tucked under the bow and use the 13" high fish box (secured in place) for the first step. since i need to donate floor space to both those anyway, might as well have them do double duty.

as always, any input on any of my crackpot ideas is appreciated.........

Hey B2, I enjoyed the pics of your cabin. I was wondering if the cabin was at a higher altitude, because here in the interior of BC's Mainland going up high has cooler temps compared to the sagebrush country down in the valley.

Rusty--you're 100% correct. down here, that's the only way to find cool. we're at abt 7400' but on the way up, we go over the crest of the moutains at about 9000'...commonly cool n rainy there. and about 20 degrees or so below El Paso temps at any given moment. we;re looking at a place in a north facing slot canyon (with a strong flowing spring) near our existing cabin, to get an even cooler microclimate for the blazing 85 degree days of June......
