B2, really like the custom-made rod holders. Excellent idea on the knee braces as I have added a kicker for trolling and I'm concerned about the extra weight when bouncing down dirt logging/resource roads for my boat. Although, I didn't notice any problems with the transom from our spring and summer trips, the additional support would be a great idea. I too have "purged" items recently including my truck as we had 3 vehicles and only room and money for 2; fiancee wants old 14' tin can sold too :( that makes me sad, but too much stuff is too much stuff.

Hey B2, isn't it fun finding long lost tools that are in next to new condition.

Just hope he doesn't find any more boats he forgot about covered by years of accumulation, kinda like American Pickers. The Admiral might lose it.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

fortunately i haven't brought any more boats home...

Hola all! Sorry I been lost at sea for a while. My employment has gone ballistic even before the recent budgetary fun (they;'re giving us cases that used to go to the private bar, since we're a fixed cost) and I simply don’t have time to get on forum any more. And then work stalled on the boats for months but I think we have things restarted.

Ironically, what got me going again on the HoliMariner was being laid up with viral infection for a week. Being stuck in bed means you have lots of time to think, including about those gumption traps that were impeding progress and sapping the will to restore. So I killed a bunch......(THIS IS KINDA LONG SO I’LL BREAK IT UP INTO SEVL INSTALLMENTS)

>>didn’t know what to do with the big holes in the bow where the docking lights were. So I went at the “eyeball” of the one that was burned out and was able to get it separated so I could get at the bulb to change it. Then I found the exact replacement bulbs on fleebay for under $15. So I’ll have working headlights, for a pittance. The tradeoff is that the bulbs are 100w each, so something like 17 amps draw at 12v. The generator on the old Chrysler only puts out about 9 amps......

P1011121.jpg.html

>>after my immersion testing revealed that the birch plywood that I used for the console delaminates badly when wet, I had kinda gotten discouraged about the very core of the project. Now I’m back at it, with the determination to slather it in epoxy and varnish and if need be even paint it to keep my hard work together, and setting it up off the deck by 1/4" on four 3" wide strips of Starboard plastic so any water on deck can just flow under it to stern.

>>as a preparation geek (ex Boy Scout, never grew out of the be prepared stuff....), I had tons of safety etc gear I wanted to tote but didn’t know where to put it. This meant I was stuck on finishing the interior of the console since I was afraid I’d glue in a shelf and then realize something didn’t fit. BUSHWAH! When I took a hard look at the console, I realized I’d built a monstrosity that would hold the bow of the Titanic, all 600 of the Light Brigade incl their horses, or Amelia Earhart’s missing airplane. So it will hold all my immediate-need boat gear and my sleeping bag etc, plus 4 gallons of emergency water.

>>the 19 gal fuel tank that was going to go in the bow, sort of under the closed area, would work better moved back inside the console (less balance change as it empties), and this will still leave me vast room for gear inside. This also simplifies the filler and venting for it. I’m building a separate “box” inside console to close it off from the electrics. Also adding an automatic halon system inside the console, altho with gasoline as the flammable, I suspect I would be blown to Mars before the heat sensor activated the extinguisher. Since this will fill 50 cu ft, I’m hoping my big conduit for the wires will serve as a pipe to let the halon fill under the splashwell too if I manually trigger it. Still adding a dry-chem extinguisher too. This means the batteries, 19 gal of fuel, and the fishbox will all be right at the fore-aft center of gravity.

>>I LOVE THE BOAT COVER!! You may recall that I tried iBoats but ended up with one from those “O” folks in north carolina cuz they guaranteed it would fit over a 24" bow rail and a windshield up to 30" over gunwale height. It’s holding up nicely to brutal Westexas sun and 60+ mph wind and never budges, and conditions in the boat are exactly where I left em, even if it’s been months....boat interior doesn’t slide slowly backwards into EntropyWorld due to the elements like if it were uncovered. I can even work under it on cold days/nights and with a 500W light, it’s pretty toasty. All this and good PR with the spouse and neighbors cuz it looks like a Boat instead of a Project. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE FIRST $$$ I SPENT ON THE BOAT. I’m ordering one for my Lone Star and hopefully next paycheck, one for a walk-around cuddy boat in hopes of making it fit the Starchief.

:welcome: to the Starmada, B2. We have some of the smartest tin heads on the planet. You started off on the right foot by posting lotsa pics.

Seriously, I'm glad you're back. I missed your wit. :lalala: For example:
I realized I?d built a monstrosity that would hold the bow of the Titanic, all 600 of the Light Brigade incl their horses, or Amelia Earhart?s missing airplane.

But really, Amelia's plane too? You exaggerate! LOL

The aircraft landing lights should be OK for short duration. Yeah, with 9 amps of charging you won't to keep them on for a long time. And finally, someone found a boat cover that really works.

It's good to see you back in the fold. :)

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks, gents. hope to be back more regularly. i may have to break down and get an internet link at home.

GA, i did say "or" ;)

JB, hard water is one of them newfangled concepts that ain't made it to west TX yet. when it's cold enough to be hard, there's no water.

CONTINUING THE SAGA OF MISSPENT TIME AND $.....
>>my little 36 qt fishbox is the wrong size for a real boat and doesn’t hold ice worth a durn, so I’m ordering a dedicated 54 qt one for this boat. It will live under an insulated seat box just forward of the steering console, almost the exact same width as console. Front of box will fold down to let me remove cooler, and seat will pivot up for quick access for a beer or to stow a cuda etc. plan is to cover cushion on top of box, and sides, with Sunbrella in some nice pattern (cheeep on fleebay).

>>I paid off the house after 23 years, so I now have a little more $ to put into the boat each month. :watermelon: Until we buy a place in the hot springs district of T or C..........

>>you may recall me agonizing on where to put the horn. It’s going on the side of console just below the throttle lever....works fine, no wiring to string to bow, much less salt water up the snoot. No brainer.

>>found a hole saw the right size for the 3 big gauges, so I don’t have to do the hogging out plan with a sanding drum.

>>figured out how to finish the auxiliary knee braces, and how to tie the whole assembly to the ribs. Basically going to bend more .080 aluminum sheet to connect the ribs to stringers on the OUTboard side of each stringer, as well as the existing riveting on the inboard side. I’ll post pix soon once aluminum gets here so this will make more sense.

>>I need a grab bar just like factory Mariners had and am going to bend something very similar....a 1" hickey should work for alum tubing. It will be 4 legs and will remove for storage when you loosen the setscrews on the bases, and the windshield will be attached to this instead of to the console proper.

>>I’m thinking on going with the “homely” plan for exterior, ie, leave it as is. Save $, saves time, makes boat look less like it has anything worth stealing aboard.

>>you may recall the trailer bunk bracket I’d mangled with hammer and 20 ton press. Obi Wan Tinobi came to me in a dream, or maybe it was the Ghost of Fishing Trips Future, and suggested I use the Force [of 1.5" steel tubing and the BFH] to open it up again. I was able to get it straightened. It would only have been $8 to replace but it’s the principle.

>>I finally figured out how to connect the vertical members to tie the angled dash to deck, so I have something to stick a sturdy bulkhead to for lockable storage. This will be easier to show in pix than explain.

HERE ARE A FEW RANDOM PIX in no particular order, but just to keep the mob at bay til i have pix of Progress to post
a semi final pic of the auxiliary knee barcing

here's the "eyeball" of the Morse docking lights separated. i just worked at it, tapping a thin putty knife into joint for about 1/2 hr til i finally was able to get it apart. still not sure how to get the bulb out, but when the new ones arrive, i'll just destroy the old one as needed to remove and figure out how to install new.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

oh my aching wallet. sent off another $1500 to the "D" place in CT yesterday......two anchors plus chain and rode, Spectra tripline for the Fortress 11 lb, life jacket for the dog, hardware for deck, the fire system and a dry chem extinguisher, the fishbox, SS tubing and fittings for grab rail, etc etc. the high cost of marine stuff....i spent over $100 just on fuel line and hose clamps.

and then another 650 today for the bimini....the high cost of wanting it 8' long for shade, tall for head and rod clearance, and stainless tube and hardware for sturdy. i have a feeling that i won't regret the cost though....sun exposure is the second biggest limiting factor on how much i can fish, after fuel cost.

funny that i may end up replacing the Chrysler not due to any power or reliability issues but due to higher output of modern alternator. there's a 200hp ETEC in ABQ right now for 1500, but i fear that would tear even the reinforced transom off the boat. for now, what i expect i'll do is rent a slip with power ($12/night)and manually charge the batteries up at night (since coming in at night is when i'll discharge batteries most) and then carry a spare 75W PV panel to charge things during daytime. anyone have any idea if i could just plug it into a dash outlet (after running through a charge controller to limit overcharging) and charge things that way?

Hey man... welcome back! Glad to hear that you are spending more of your "mis-spent youth" on the boat! I agree that having the boat under cover is well worth the price of admission.

Hopefully, the work factor won't take too much time away from boat time!

B2 - Glad your back at the helm of the Mariday or Holiner or what ever. Great update (sss) lots going on in that brain, or was it the fever?

Not a lot to offer, except what if you changed the fixture in the light to a standard auto type, you could use cheap bulbs or even LED. Unless you really need the super bright docking lights.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Paid off the house - Now that's worthy of a party. :D At least a few extra chugs of some good South of the Border brew.

I think the Etec is around 420 lbs and your Chrysler is around 300, give or take. Weight would be my greatest concern and you're putting the gas tank under the console along with a battery up front, so it's sort of counter balanced. And the added knee braces ought to handle the power increase. A 133 amp alternator will keep all the batteries charged and the docking lights lit up. Sensible driving should keep the wild 200 horses from running up your backside. Your biggest problem might be picking flying fish out of your teeth. :D

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

EZ, i tend to agree. either it has Issues or it will be gone before i could get to ABQ.

I don;t know how you guys are so organized....i’m scared to rivet down the floorboards for fear I’ll figure out what else I needed to do under them just as I set the last rivet. It’s not just measure once, cut 3 times, it’s take it back out and all apart cuz of what I forgot.

I realize I seem to have strayed a bit from the Way of the Bottom Feeder with all the $ I’ve been plowing into the boat. Like the $160 11 lb Fortress anchor....but I’ll be glad I bought top grade when I’m relying on it to keep me off a lee shore at night. I’m even considering dropping $12-1500 (ie, 4-5 times what I paid for boat/motor/trlr) on a life raft. I’m still BFin it alla way on non safety items, like the console. Taylor makes a nice little one for a mere $650 or so, windshield and grab bar extra. I should have under 150 in mine. I did pick up just a little $ concern from the Admiral, recently when she asked “can’t we just use the bimini we have?" (a 5' long 2 bow cheepie that fits the PortaBote and barely gives any shade).

Also recently picked up a Honda 10hp kicker for $250. Seems to have great compression but I haven’t started it yet. I’ll try that this weekend. This will also be a good main motor for the 16' Lone Star.

remember what i said about the cover....here you see the other plan....shredded tarp, bird poop, and tree debris. i'm ordering a cover for this one next paycheck.

A little progress last night. I got the controls mounted and the tank “box” inside the console almost ready to put together for good (gotta epoxy the whole interior 1st). Also cut the hole for fuel filler and cut a beveled piece of scrap redwood to angle the filler up slightly.

Here are a few more pix.
Controls box in place; cables will go into deck just behind console. you can see the fuel filler and the beveled piece (i was scared that unless i angled it slightly, there would be a tendency for fuel to splash back when filling. would have liked to angle it more but oh well.)
P1011126.jpg
[/IMG]

fuel tank trying out its new home. Strap over the top is leftover scrap from old sun faded strap they were using to hold boat on trailer. should be stout enough to hold tank in place inside a fitted box.
P1011130.jpg
[/IMG]

The fuel tank selector valve to select between console and stern tanks, and water separator/filter. Sensor for fuel flow gauge will go downstream of these.
P1011131.jpg
[/IMG]

Brackets to mount the bilge pumps made from scraps of Lone Star. The big one will also be held to center knee brace with nylon strap since it weighs about 5 lbs.

i've decided to carpet the area under bow, mostly to reduce hull booming and noise from what i store there (anchors etc). i'm assuming that to follow the contours of the hull, i want the cheapest thnnest carpet available,,,this ain't gonne be walked on. what have any of you used and what's been your experience?

B2 -- I used the stuff from Home Depot for the hull sides and the bulk head at the front. The bulk head made a difference in the booming noise from the front... I rode with it out once and it was louder. The carpet on the sides and at the front will of course never be walked on except for perhaps a small child having a once in a while meltdown!

Is scraps of Lone Star a new reality show? It should be! Life of a Bottom Feeder.

Be careful when you turn that 2000 galloner on or the Sea of Cortez will be sucked dry but pick up the fish you want before turning the pump off. :)

After EZ put up about $1500 for the Etec, I thought oh yeah that's pretty cheap. But you never know, it might be a disgruntled ex.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

IM, thx for input. you recall what you paid? no rot/mildew problems? i like the idea of using something cheaper than marine carpet but it needs to be lots cheaper.

GA, i thought hard about getting the 3700gph one, requires two 25 amp feeds. you'd be amazed how much that claimed output figure drops once you add a couple of feet of head, plumb it through corrugated hose, and use an outlet that is <1 1/8"....suspect i'll be lucky to see 1200 gph real world out of it. still, ability to remove 20 gal/minute is reassuring.

somehow i'm envisioning a song to the tune of the Who's "Pictures of Lily".....Pieces of Lone Star

so my nice redwood bevel ring to angle the fuel filler? split it in half last night hogging out the hole, so i redid it in oak. sorry no pix til next week. i have a weekend off from going to see the Admiral so hoping to have lots of progress to show you guys on Monday. this console is really time intensive and frequently the results don't show well on camera. i hope to also get my bow bulkhead in over the weekend, to give me dry lockable storage.

Hey B2,

I don't recall the exact price but somewhere around $5-$6 a square yard rings a bell... so not super cheap... but it didn't take much to do what I needed.

Sounds like you are really rockin and rollin man!!!
