Sorry to hear about Ginger. The pets become family, I know. RIP Girl.

On the boat front - When I saw the mis-cut, I thought a perfect place for some AL angle. Then in the next pic there it was, like magic.

Barato sorry for your loss. Our pets are part of the family, and I think the dogs get better treatment than I do in our household. Zach has two little peek-a-poos and I'm constantly checking the gate to make sure it's closed.

Sweet looking dashboard. You got some skilz bro. Molding was invented to hide boo, boo's.;)

Thanks for kind words on dog. Yeah, good plan double checking those gates....that’s what happened here. Ginger was normally great and stayed right on front porch, but she bolted after a cat (one of her less endearing habits....she’d killed 2 of ours) at exact moment the bozo came down the street a little fast.

Little more work on trim last night. Sorry for all the detail pix and painfully slow progress, but I allus figured Da Mob would prefer that I err on side of too many pix.....

“NO FEAR”?? Try taking a 3" hole saw to a small piece of 1/8" thick hardwood, you’ll Know Fear......... As you can see, calculated to drive one to drink

happily, the results came out OK. I screwed it to a hunk of scrap pine and used the drill press. If you don’t have a drill press, watch Crackslist for one. Totally aside from control, I’m always amazed at how much faster the same bit seems to cut when it’s being held rigidly at 90 degrees to surface than when I’m trying to hold it steady in a hand drill.
P1011189.jpg

I wasn’t kidding on using the “armed” light to cover that hole. Another possibility would be to use the circular piece of walnut cut out for the gauge as trim to cover the hole, and put a switch in the middle of it.
P1011191.jpg

dug around the outhouse and found a hunk of walnut that I think I can use for the bezel trim
P1011193.jpg

finally, what was that about “trim covers everything”? You may recall that I did the oak facing for the original Holiday dash in two pieces, for ease of installation and ability to stretch my available wood. Which leaves an ugly seam in the middle. solution: more guitar parts. Flamed maple headplate with a paua abalone dolphin... No I didn’t cut the dolphin image out, bought it that way on fleebay. And I’m too much of a hack to inlay it so I just epoxied it on the surface.

B2 - What happens when you run out of guitar wood? Better planning maybe. :) It does look nice.

what happens when i run out of guitar wood is that the Admiral is really happy about no longer having that huge box of exotic hardwood in the library...we even have some real Brazilian rosewood but it ain't going on the boat due to, among other reasons, i don't want CITES trouble when i cross the border with it......

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Hi gang–

not much progress this weekend. Mostly working on the bike and riding up to T or C in a dust storm for an assignation with the wife. Hairiest ride I’ve had in a long while, 45+mph cross wind was literally tossing me off the road at points and maybe 50 yd viz due to dust. glad i wasn't towing a boat.

This week I hope to get the fuel tank in console plumbed in, and to box around the filler hose to reduce the chances of it getting knocked loose by junk inside the console......I used two 1 1/8" copper 45 degree elbows and there’s barely room for the double hose clamps on their neck. Also plan to add a “bead” of JB around them to help hold the hoses on.....if things go acc to plan, it shouldn’t be exposed to any gas.

Got speaker holes cut in side panels and “wings”

P1011207.jpg
[/IMG]

the hasp attachment for the hatch.....this is actually through-bolted with 2" 8-32 screws and nylock nuts. Since this boat will be left for months in dry storage, I want it as secure as reasonably possible, at least from casual pilferage....not much I can do if people are willing to do major mayhem to get inside.
P1011204.jpg
[/IMG]

working on cutting the fuel filler hose. I’ve found that I get the neatest and most square cut if I mark all the way round outside with a sharpie, then carefully cut rubber with hacksaw, then use cutting wheel on the 2 stainless reinforcing wires....dikes will cut em, but not happily.
P1011203.jpg
[/IMG]

got the walnut hunk for the steering wheel trim bezel cut out and sort of sanded to shape. My plans to make the poor man’s lathe (by mounting it on a carriage bolt chucked in the drill press) and thereby round it perfectly went to bits when I drilled the center hole off center.....so I just rounded it by hand as best I could and mounted it so the worst spots are on the bottom where you can’t much see em........ amazing what you find in your outhouse sometimes.

Highly recommended gumption enhancement: review all your old pix back to the way the boat came home. I did that last night and feel a lot better about how much work I still have ahead of me when I see how much I’ve already gotten through

my stainless steel frame uberbimini has arrived and is waiting in Albukookie.....I had it sent to my wife’s place cuz I didn’t want to pay Guv’nor Perry $40+ in sales tax just because that “O” place has a store in DFW area.

yah, the tenor bellow of four two-stroke cylinders fills my daydreams at the very least....:D

Dozer, that's one of many reasons i ride the kind that goes offroad without breaking stride.....12" of suspension travel means i can hit the desert at 70 if needed to avoid on-road stupidities....why i always try to commute in one of the outside lanes

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Well, y’all inspired me to finish cleaning the shop. As I may have mentioned, I LOVE that 25' shop vac hose, cuz the noisy thing doesn’t have to be right in my ear when I work....I often leave it in the next room. Totally aside from not having to lift it in and out of boat as much. Highly recommended enhancement for a basic tool.

I knew my console would get splattered with blood but figured it would be fish blood and happen after it was finished. Mr. Sadder But Wiser now knows not to stomp a tick he pulled off the dog anywhere near his new birch console.......

A few pix for your guffawage:

this sucker is heavy enough (and I suspect has some torque reaction when it fires up) that I wanted to install retaining straps to avoid stressing the bottom bracket

one more lesson I’ve learned the hard way is that some direct light, RIGHT on where you’re about to cut, produces better cuts for old goats with fading eyes. I keep stopping to move the lamp to keep it right ahead of my saw.
P1011210.jpg

nother lesson here: when you;re making spacers for the hasp on your hatch door so it’s the same level as the trim, check first to be sure that the scrap of trim you’re using came from same source/batch as the original you’re trying to match, so you don’t learn that it’s about 1/32" off in thickness AFTER you’ve cut and sanded it to shape. About to get started again re-doing it.
P1011212.jpg

What I was talking about on drilling the thin walnut sections. One of the big holes needs to be drilled slightly off where I put the pilot hole, so it will have to be clamped to drill press pretty tightly to keep bit from following existing hole.
P1011213.jpg

decided the final location for horns and got em mounted....simplifies their wiring nicely!
P1011214.jpg

and my cheapie outriggers arrived....about $140 for whole setup on fleecebay. Outriggers are really simple (the Polynesians who invented em used to use bamboo poles) and I never understood why they needed to be $600+. These obviously aren’t made as stoutly as the $600+ ones but I’m happy for the $. I’ll keep you posted on how they do.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

As predicted, not much done on boat over weekend; mostly playing plumber with Admiral’s irrigation system, so she can enjoy her other role as Vegie Goddess. I did pick up the bimini and get it home. Last night, installed it as well as the outriggers and main VHF antenna.

Mostly really happy with the bimini, cept the joints between side bows and center sections are held together with 10-24 machine screws, and the holes didn’t line up well on some so I had to touch up holes with a drill. On others, the holes were big enough that the screws don’t stay in place. I was thinking of replacing with rivets but that would make this monster impossible to break down for transport off the boat if I ever had to, so I’ll likely just reinstall screws with a little 4200.

P1011216.jpg
[/IMG]

REALLY happy with decision to go with 54" height and 8' length....I’m 6'4" and it gives me several inches of headroom when mounted on the Holiday gunwales. (On the Starchief rails, it will be even more). Plus it covers most all of the open area of the boat. Stainless tube does make it feel much sturdier than alum. But I can see that overall, this monster won’t work with my ancient bimini tracks as it already broke the nylon slider block on one......I’ll need to replace them with the solid mounts once I get final fore-aft location fine tuned.

P1011222.jpg
[/IMG]
P1011221.jpg
[/IMG]

Outriggers went slightly outboard of the “plane” of the bimini framework and slightly inboard of rod holders. I probably can’t keep rods in side rod holders with riggers folded for travel, but that’s not a good spot for em when running anyway....they get soaked with spray. Pieces are lighter and flimsier than good ones, no doubt, but they seem like they’ll work, and light is good for a trailerwarrior tin boat. I’ll probably use emery cloth or the dremel and clean up a few rough edges on the stainless mount tubes.
P1011219-1.jpg
[/IMG]

Finally, the antenna. It went on the raised bow, as far aft as possible. This lets it just clear the bimini when straight up, be folded back against it 15 degrees or so for rough water bracing, and lay flat forward out of the way for a “bowsprit” look when I’m not using (Moby **** beware...)
P1011223.jpg
[/IMG]

Oh, and finally, I got the Taco spreader light loosely mounted on the bimini....planning on doing a bunch of night fishing so I wanted a good bright, reliable light. To keep it portable, it will just plug into an outlet on the console and wire will run roughly up the grab rail. No pix of that yet.
