Now she's starting to look like a proper fishing boat. :fish2: Only thing missing is a big ole Captains chair and First Mate Walter Brennan keeping the cold cervaza coming. If he doesn't drink it all first. :faint2:

Really starting to take shape there B2! I like the bimini! Man I bet there was a lot of jigging to get all the antennae rigged with the bimini! Well done!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

yeah, IM, i was stressing quite a bit over whether i'd be able to make the two clear each other. but for bimini, would have mounted antenna on console side like i did horn, for wiring ease. But the bimini will help with the work on the boat, as it’s already getting hot here. We’ve already seen 90 (followed by low of 29 a few days later). Really, all this stuff is me getting sidetracked, as epoxying and reinstalling the transom needs to be Job 1. Our weather has been mostly perfect but for dust storms the last few weeks and allergy grief for all

Re the “gone all woodworker” part—my buddy suggested I build console in aluminum and I even considered using that nasty stuff Which Shall Remain Unnamed, but I’m more comfy doing cabinet work with wood than either laying up glass or bending sheet alum. And I like the look....sitting in boat after mounting bimini (making burbling trolling-speed motor noises), I looked at all the varnished wood around me and got warm fuzzies. If I were to start over knowing what I do now, i’d still build console in wood but I’d use EXterior grade ply and plan on painting console white so screwups would be easier to hide.

GA, the first mate looks like a mutiny waiting to happen and hasn’t been very helpful about handing me beers.

with all this discussion about using bits of Lone Star, I should emphasize that no tinnies were harmed in the making of this project....the LS is just fine and sitting in my driveway. This is seat bases and stuff I took out in course of turning it from ski boat to fishing boat.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Work on the boat last night consisted of mostly stripping the console for final epoxy orgy. Yeah, I guess I work a little bar sackwards, but I wanted to be sure end grain of all cuts and holes would get epoxied. nakedness shows all warts (and scars from that madman with the saw...). All cuts and trims on console are done (I hope!) So it’s time for epoxeeeeee......manana.

You’d be amazed at how long it took to pull all that hardware
P1011232.jpg

I’m pretty excited about dropping in the console but need to get all underflooor stuff done first before bolting it down for good, but I need to test fit it to figure out how long the underfloor stuff should be.....remind me again what an idjit I am for not just refreshing a perfectly good Holiday? “No, we can rebuild it , make it worse, let’s use interior plywood....”

then we had some juvenile mayhem fun....I have the new bulbs in hand, time for the old docking light bulb’s day of reckoning.
The barbarians gather at the gates......

No tears for this one

one good hit with the hammer later.
P1011237.jpg
[/IMG]Now I need to figure out how to remove the retaining ring from the eyeball. A BFH is likely to figure prominently......

Now yer talkin'. Grab the BFH and go to town.

Is that a rubber ring with a metal retainer? Every time I look my eyes are drawn to the hammer and can't see i well. :)

good thing i didn't show you a pic of the trick 19 oz Vaughan framing hammer with the offset handle...... yup, you got it right. looks like rubber ring is fitted around bulb and it's put in position in eyeball, then retaining ring is driven in and held in place by, i guess, friction/inertia/corrosion/Murphy

since that i've heard that the Mob are the Ultimate Missourians and won't believe anything without pix, i hereby present verification that the lone star is alive and well, if not too pretty. will somone teach that fool how to restore an aluminum boat? like the part about you only need to put the Coat-it on the INside of the hull....?? the Aesthetic Police need to send Vito to break that guy's kneecaps.

you can see that i at least had the decency to pull off the wood superstructure and quit trying to make a flat bottom boat fit for offshore use, now that i have a Real Boat

boat does show some pretty heroic efforts to avoid having to bend up the aluminum and replace the transom....1/4" alum plate across full width of transom, inside and out.
P1011240.jpg

sorry about digression. back to Starcrafts Monday....the cover for the Starchief came in, so i'm hoping to install it Sunday after the Admiral heads back to ABQ

I notice you don't show the port side of the hull. Is that your source for "Lone*Star" bits for Starcraft repair?

Any luck with the light?

Good job Barato. Epoxy is just a dream for me at this time. It's been in the 30's here, occasionally it creeps up into the 40's. She's taking shape a little at a time. Is it premature to talk about a paint scheme yet? How about a name?

That hole in the bow looks like it would house a torpedo very nicely. Lights only draw attention to you. Just a thought.

Would it be less-invasive to remove the last 12" of gunwale cap when popping-out the old transom?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

bluefin, that's a great idea, thanks. i'll try that when i get there. for right now, gonna just get this one legal and use it as big tiller steer boat with the 10hp honda. lakes in NM aren't that big and the alum plate would suppport the Honda even with no wood in the middle. oh, and i also need to replace that big section of hull on the other side of the boat where i've been cutting out aluminum sections to use on the holiday......;)

GA, haven't tried on the light yet. it's positioned on the vise but the whacking has not yet commenced.

Don, hope you get some decent weather soon. i'll be envying your temps in another month. for now, tentative name is leaning towards "Tin Tiburon". hopefully it won't be D-I-V-O-R-C-E.....the Admiral was pretty shocked by the way the apartment/boathouse looked this weekend, with 3 disassembled boats spread all over. hey, what am i supposed to do when i live by myself?

got a little work done on the boats over weekend despite cleaning up for the Admiral's visit and more dust storms. got both the Lone Star and the Starchief covered, and once again, i should have made the cover some of the first $ i spent on em. on Holiday, made up the aft wiring harness and snaked it through the conduit. replaced the other conduit with 3" sewer pipe and got and motor and TnT wires run through it, and fuel line for forward tank run. still need to get some #1 welding cable for the negative battery cable but the positive one is in. big epoxy orgy (deluxe version, with the troupe of dancing oompaloompas and the pantomime walrus....) on transom and console has begun. misplaced camera so no pix til manana.

Big epoxy party last night. Choirs of angels in attendance, or maybe that was just the xylene fumes. As threatened, pix follow:

the motor wiring for the old chrysler came in this nifty bundle encased in rubber sheath. It looked in pretty decent shape after some cleanup (with Ace Hdwe.furniture polish; cleans and helps em slide through the conduit since it’s about half silicone) so I decided to reuse it. It’s also hard finding wire in the exact colors to match the Chrysler color scheme.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

the transom getting its final epoxying. I made this “dam” to keep the super thin resin (50-50 or better with xylene) in a pool on top of trans, so it would soak in deeply. I wondered if xylene would eat the adhesive on tape, but it held fine and only a few drips made it past the tape dam. I was able to get 3-4 oz of resin mix into it this way.

Another serendipitous discovery about the thinned resin: it does a great job of wetting out glass cloth and making it follow contours, much better than in unthinned state. Of course, this gives very little strength so you’ll have to follow up with sevl layers of full strength epoxy.

the LS under its cover. Motor pouch looks pretty silly w/o a motor inside it. I haven’t bothered with the tiedown straps yet but it mostly stayed on during yesterday’s 40+ mph dust storm.

Wire runnin', epoxy runnin', runnin' for cover - You been busy. Nice thing about having two boats under cover, lotsa new hiding places for stuff before the next Admiral visit.

I like the conduit for wire/cables, good sized if you need to run more stuff from the console to the stern. Don't forget to add some pulling wire or string in the conduit before you button up.

Speaking of legal up there, did you get the registration fixed up for her? I remember some talking about it, but I'll be darned if I can remember. That old age thing again. :grumpy:

+1 there!!! Man you've gone boat resto bananas!!!!! Holy smokes! Plus add in what sounds like continuous dust storms.... man something we Canucks don't have to contend with east of the Mississippi anyways :)

Nice work so far man. Epoxy city...hmmmm hmmm!

Nice work B2, I bet the dust storms we get up here on the prairies are nothing like the ones you get down there.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Thanx guys. Been pushing hard lately cuz weather here has been just perfect of late for workin on it (lows in 50s, highs in 80s), and I’ve been doing at least 3-4 hrs almost every evening. Given the fed gummint budget issues, I may take some unpaid leave to finish boat before the triple digit temps arrive. I wouldn’t be surprised to see em before end of April, the way this winter has been down here.

No pix today because epoxy drying just isn’t that exciting..... This is a GREAT time of year to do epoxy work, though–I know I’ll wake up with a headache every day anyway, due to the dust storms, so the xylene hangover isn’t as noticeable.....

I did get one more useful thing done this weekend: drilled and mounted the second bunk, so now the boat doesn’t rock back and forth on trailer as I work inside it! One of those things that you wonder why you lived with for so long.

Dozer, you may be right. We definitely get em more frequently.

GA, no, I still haven’t gotten the paperwork done. For some reason, I’d rather work on boats than deal with bureaucracies. So how’d I end up in this line of work? Gracias for the reminder.
At the ends of the conduit, I plan to use sections of old radiator hose to protect wires from abrasion by conduit end.

Bluefin, no worries. I was just messing with GA, given his musings that I was only shooting pix of the LS from one side cuz I’d cut the other one out for Starcraft parts.

And I was nicely letting Blue think he was the guilty party.

On the paperwork - Is NM more lenient? You know, make the Admiral an offer she can't refuse. Like promising to keep the place cleaned up for her visits. :faint2:
