Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

i have a few more things that got done but managed to leave the pix on home computer. will post more tomorrow. i did the test fit on the9 gal kicker tank, and i'll either have to leave it out on deck or ditch the sliders in favor of hinged doors mounted about 1/2" further forward.

You were a busy bee after the lack of foam held you up. Lots of lights and muffling carpet too.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Too much progress and pix for one post so I’m going to break this up

I dream of a big head rider
she got 4 cams, and valves and chains
yes I dream of a big head rider
with 4 heavy cams, all them valves and chains
but I can tote her easy
got badazz kneee braces under them splashwell drains........

THE KNEE BRACES: this has been a major since I need to get the transom done before I can do a bunch of other stuff on boat. I got the Lone Star sections bent up for the stringer bracing but needed to get it finally drilled and all put together. Once again, you gotta love a drill press when you can easily put a perfect 90 degree hole through both sides of a 2" box section tube

first pic shows things roughly lined up. You can see my precision line for where the Lone Star section comes to on stringer.

The outboard brace in position on the stringer but not yet riveted to ribs
P1010196.jpg
[/IMG]

each of these 7 holes involved drilling through roughly .325" (about 8 mm) of aluminum; the tedium had to be experienced to be believed, esp once the bits got dull. Neighbors no doubt also loved the sound of air drill on 18' alum resonator. Had to use the air drill as couldn’t get the cordless in there.
P1010197.jpg
[/IMG]

Process also involved a million niggling little clearance trims.....mark, get out of boat, cut, get back in boat, repeat ad dispiritum......... For a lot of em, you can’t see the next cut til you make the last one and test fit things.
P1010209.jpg
[/IMG]

a view of one of the Lone Star sections, riveted in place on outboard side of stringer. You can see how this ties knee brace to last 4 ribs as well as stringer.

Closer pic from same angle
P1010216.jpg

anyway, thus endeth the saga of the aux knee braces. I’m super happy with the result. Stringers are rock solid, even before the floor is put in; before, they flopped around when I sat on floorboards. About $100 but could be done for much much less with scrap aluminum.

:embarassed:MURPHY!! So ya use a nice, new, sharp jigsaw blade when cutting the bilge access port holes so yer saw don?t wander. It leaves a nice, sharp new plywood edge, right on the best handle to use to carry the heavy floor panel. Cuidado....plywood cuts at the base of your fingers take a long time to heal........

Then you buy 4 packs of new shoplight bulbs, and break 2 before you get em home courtesy of the wind. We have 7000' mountains in the middle of town, literally....and I can?t see em for the dust storms. Wind has been 35-50 mph daily.

Got the foam, $258 worth. Cheaper than sinking!

Got the 6' handle cut for the big hickey.....look out stainless rail tubing
P1010208.jpg
[/IMG]

here?s a sign the transom is back in for good: bent the tabs down into place. I should have been a little more careful with the durabak, tho.....it will be fun hammering that side rail back into position.
P1010217.jpg
[/IMG]

No epoxy work on console but I did get a bunch more glass cloth reinf cut out and fitted in place. Tonight is Epoxy party.
P1010218.jpg
[/IMG]

We?re approaching decision time on console fore-aft placement....it will take a few beers to steel myself to cut THOSE holes. We?re also approaching our first furlough Friday....how to cut your pay 10% without it being obvious that?s what is going on, and still get the same work out of ya. Oh well what ya gonna do? If you have a TIN BOAT PROJECT, the answer is easy.....

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Another issue that has been nagging is what to do with the transom cap; like many of yours, it had been pretty badly hashed when the old trannny began to warp and bow outwards. I think we figured out an answer, at least for this one.

here’s the “before” pix

P1010198.jpg

you can see how it was bowed outward in the center and had been nearly torn through. Previous owner had also installed a loop of stainless through top edge, I guess for use as a boarding grab rail. the solution I hit on was to take a 4' section of 1/16" thick x1.5" wide alum flat bar, and form it so it fits inside the curve.

First step involved the handy circular bending form

SORRY, PHOTOBUCKET ISSUES AGAIN, POSTING REST OF PIX TOMORROW

Man... Murphy... whatchagonnado????? That dude can go visit.... say ya know a middle michiganer... :D He's been here... been there with you... man this guy gets around!

Sorry to hear bout your hand/finger dude! Kinda an occupational hazard workin' with tin and all I suppose!

Looks good so far and I like your improvisation with the tin bending. Almost forgot to mention that your bracing in the last post looks rock solid.

Gotta love those furlough... guess they figure most folks would prefer some pay vs none! Can't say I disagree....experienced the same thing in '09 --- opened our own business in '10 figuring if/when it happens again I've got the business and boat building among other things to keep me occupied and some extra cash flowin' You're nearing retirement right???? I think that's what you said a bit back... so it just gives you a task of it. Maybe a fishing day in there for ya too.... but not with 50 mph winds --- that' gotta produce some decent wave action!

Keep on rollin' man!!!

I think B changed course again and started to rehab what looks like a hand truck. Stay on track, son.

Can't wait to see the result of the bending over the wheel. And the rail tube results. I feel you can tow the boat with the console when it's finished. It's got to be strong!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

we're posting this a little out of order. we'll finish the transom cap later.

OK, now we have a public service announcement from Mr. Hand and Mr. Murphy

Yes, Virginia, cobalt bits do in fact drill human flesh pretty well too. why you should use a block of scrap to hold the reinforcing pieces up against bottom of gunwale while you drill mounting holes. Like this:
P10102232.jpg
[/IMG]

here;s the result: outrigger bases now have double thickness aluminum under them, and bimini bases have 3/4" plywood under them. I wanted to upsize the bimini base mounitng bolts to 1/4" but would have involved too much drilling of the base braqcket, so instead I used extra long #10s with two nylock nuts on each....idea is that it will require stripping off 2x as many threads before the screw pulls out. I’m still worried about them shearing off and may swap em out for Grade 8s, if they make those in #10 size.

Not much else to describe or picture. Just slingin endless coats of epoxy. Actually had a really nice ride up to TORC this weekend, no dust storms, but it still left me tired enough that I didn’t get much done. Also starting to pull out the fishing gear and get prep’d for Memorial Day trip south, which is looking increasingly likely to involve the portabote. I have prep work to do on that, on the truck, and I need to get and fix up two used bikes for a friend’s kids.

Chumming for sharks, are we? Careful, big guy. I'm seeing some nice looking wood. The coaming wood in the shot demonstrating proper tool use is especially nice.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

some days i think that beggar Murph really has it in for me. walking back from lunch, i ran into a sign post in front of the fed bldg really hard....split head open and bruised hip. so now i'm on concussion watch.

i didn't tell the nurse that my evening plans involved wallowing in xylene fumes, again...... i did get a good laugh when she asked if my tetanus was up to date. hey nice lady, that is the other requirement besides pix (GREG........??????) for Starmada membership.

almost no work last night...i cut two sticks of molding. i did notice that the wood pad for my kicker bracket now weighs substantially more than it did before i soaked 6+ oz of resin-xylene mix into it, with almost no coating on the surface(it all soaked in). i was watching the wood just drink it in. a few coats of spar to UV-protect the poxy and i don't expect to have more deterioration problems with that any time soon.
