Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

i've actually been working at least a half hour or so every night and finally have the oak trim for console varnished and going back on. even as poopy as i've felt, i refuse to let this bug keep me from boat work. pretty slow install, though, when you have to fill every screw hole with caulk before installing the #4 screw.

i'm installing a backup VHF under the bow with the stereo and built the box for the two....varnished it then figured out it was completely the wrong size. dunno what happened, i measured carefully. what i get for measuring while foggy...and it was just scrap wood anyway.

sending off another 300+ to the marine supply today....spare VHF, antenna n mount (will go on the grab rail above console and lay flat under the bimini when latter is up), lots of small stuff. i also decided to get some Sunbrella and make covers for the swim step and kicker bracket wood, since both of those are exposed even with boat cover in place.

if i feel up to it this weekend, i may try to paint the lower third of hull down to just above the keel. if not, i'll still have some pix to post Monday....ready to make the support bracketry for the belly tank.

Get feeling better, B2. Then you can put in more than 30 minutes at a time. And you need all your strength to mount the Fridge. :D

Hope you are feeling better sooner than later man!! Glad to see you're still at it despite feeling like carp.... and ya, at the best of times, we all measure 14 times, cut once and still somehow manage to completely screw it up!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks gents. little progress last eve but not worth pix....i subject you all to enough minutiae already. there will be a foto barrage coming Monday, i feel it in my bones. :pirate:

a Q: i need to bend up the 7/8" alum bow rail to more or less follow the curve of the bow. anyone have any suggestions on how to do this, or what to use as a form? i know some folks have successfully bent Al tube using MAPP gas torch, but i don't think that's feasible to heat along the entire 6' length enough to soften it, plus that don't work if i end up having to use the side rail of boat for a bending form. any input appreciated!

pulling on the newly acquired knowledge regarding annealing...depending on the aluminum alloy...you heat it to a certain temperature (i.e. when the soap burns) then allow it to slowly cool (air)...then bend-away against some kind of form made from PLY?

I just finished bending my new bow rails using a 3/4"conduit bender with a layer of vinyl wrapped on the tubing, it turned out pretty good not perfect. I will post up some picks as soon as I get a chance.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Hi B2. I bent the long curves in the 7/8" stainless steel for my bimini using a plywood form. I cut the bend radius about 1/2 of the desired radius, expecting some spring back. Although my form served me well, in retrospect, I didn't need such a tight radius; could have been maybe 3/4 of desired. It worked for me though by advancing the tubing in the form and not forcing the tubing fully into the form. Therein lies the danger that you can create dents and sharp direction changes that you don't want.

Be patient. Have a rudimentary jig somewhere that you can use to take a little bend out as may be required. It's best to have a longer piece of tubing to start with to give you some leverage, then scrap the excess. I only used a pipe (EMT) bender for the tight bends at the corners. I don't really know how this compares to 7/8" aluminum. - Grandad

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks for input! i had been looking at where to get the tubing, since the shipping was going to double the price. happened to look in the aluminum bin at my friendly chandlery, Ace Hdwe, and found some 1" tube in 8' sections for about $19, shipping consisted of hauling it back up the hill on the bicycle. it's pretty thin wall; no idea on the alloy but it's very likely 3003 since that's the most common. it will be easy to bend and adequately strong. i'll get on bending soon, but EOTSKU is coming down this weekend so i need to show some progress on texturing and painting the dining room. :distracted:

feeling a LOT better, hope it's for good this time. very productive weekend, lots o pix but it may be manana before i can get em up due to work. for now let's just say we are BACK IN BLACK!

No snow here to speak of but I can't wear flip-flops cuz my toes froze off, so there is nothing to hold Flip-flops on.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

AS THREATENED:

First order of biz on the 25 gal below-deck tank was to build a “cradle” to support it in the “V” of the hull....then I can get on test fitting into hull and seeing what I’ll have to do to cover it.

I cut the .100" sheets of 6061 to the dimensions of the tank plus allowance for hydrocarbon swell and some padding against chafing. Then screwed on (assembling it with #4 screws rather than rivets until I’m sure I have it where I want it) the two lengthwise rails of 2x2 L-channel, then two short ones of same stuff for lateral end supports, then used the scrap from the flat sheets for reinf under the center where there’s about a 3/4" gap between the two sheets.
layout roughed out:

Here’s what it looks like now.

P1010172.jpg
[/IMG]

Tank fits nicely
P1010173.jpg
[/IMG]
P1010174.jpg
[/IMG]

and I’m thinking of using some foam sheets from the glass block window (about 5/16-3/8" thick) for padding around the edges, between tank and aluminum cradle. The bottom of cradle will eventually get a coat of Plasti-dip (the stuff you put on tool handles) to cover rivet heads and hopefully protect against abrasion of tank bottom. Finally, will add bracing underneath made from 1" square alum tube riveted to ribs....two longitudinal braces, plus as much lateral bracing as I can fit without raising it any more...the cradle already adds about 5/16-3/8" of height. More later on this.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

you may recall that my swingback seat/fishbox
P1010096.jpg
[/IMG]

was too short to let me see over my too-tall console so I needed to build a riser. I looked at the ideas some of y’all suggested on raising the top only but didn’t see a feasible way that wouldn’t either compromise the insulation and sealing of fishbox, look like one of them old-folks toilet seat risers, and/or keep me from being able to open the lid and swing the back (one feature I hadn’t realized til it got here, which I LOVE, is that I can swing the backrest so the seat faces either forward or back.....latter should work great for trolling!).

SO..........I set the fence on the circular saw and ripped the 3/4 marine ply down into 7" wide strips, cut em to length (base will be 18x36"), and cut some 2” L-channel for corner braces.
P1010155.jpg
[/IMG]

Clamped it all in place and drilled it for #8x2" screws

P1010175.jpg
[/IMG]
then glued and screwed corners and attached corner braces with short #8 screws just to hold it square during assembly (we’ll later drill these braces on the drill press, drill the “box” correspondingly, and through bolt em).

Time for a test fit of the boxes that will live down there...Stanley box for my big lures and several Plano boxes for the smaller stuff. You see the doubled center (off center, actually) brace here.
P1010176.jpg
[/IMG]

Next, I marked the hinge locations and installed em prior to cutting out the door. Once that’s done, center brace gets glued and screwed in place. Then the scrap is used as doublers for the sides and the door area.....easier to picture than explain, so I’ll leave that for next installment. All told, should be more than strong enough to support seat/fishbox even when it's full of ice and boat is rockin and rollin....just gotta get the attachment to deck secure.
P1010177.jpg
[/IMG]

Finally....fixing the diaper rash on baby’s bottom......next installment....

that's one sweet tank cradle Bruce! I may do something similar even though my little 18gal will be under the splashwell.

so...how did the dining-room texture/paint project turn-out? :D

diaper rash

we had another two near perfect days for paint work this weekend....60-80 degrees and low (for the desert) wind. Decided the bottom needed to look good too, but kept the prep limited since it will all get gouged up again anyway.

things did not go altogether smoothly. I tilted the boat up with jack, wedged 2x4 in place under gunwale, Murphy came along when I wasn’t looking and kicked the jack out from under the boat so it fell sideways, half off the trailer. Oops.

Fortunately, no damage to hull. no NEW damage, anyway,,,it was already scraped from banging on that fender

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Skipped the 220 in jitterbug step for the starboard side....just wirebrushed around the rivets and scrubbed with scotchbrite and soap. incidentally, i found that these little brushes with super fine stainless wire work GREAt for cleaning around rivets, and that it seems to work better if you leave all 3 brushes in the package.

I can live with it. Main concern is getting the shark mouth decal to lay flat and adhere right. if i need to, i'll go back over the area where it will fit, and sand and re-do.

Disaster averted! A close call falling off the trailer. And diaper rash - Keep Sig away!

Are you going to need a foot rest with the raised cooler seat? You have long legs attached to the flip-flops, but I have visions of Edith Ann.

B2 real good progress you got going on there. We need to kick Murphy's arse all the way out east to join maybe a glasser group.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

good idea. how does the Murphy exorcism go?

"yo, Murph, i hear the Bayliner owners annual gathering has free green beer and lots of undermaintained, poorly-secured-on-trailers boats operated by intoxicated people and wet t-shirt contests and rock bands and EVERYTHING"

GA, thought of that. that will be known as the FLYING BRIDGE. ;) actually, seriously, i figure more height will be great for spotting fish and as long as i can hold onto the grab rail and move steering via a short rope loop.....

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

the dining-room texture/paint project wellll......i did manage to find and read the owner's manual for the texture gun. :redface-new:

Like one of those late night TV ads, there’s more (at least I won’t offer any vegematics or ginsu knives).

For port side, we had a few additional challenges....mesquite and palo verde trees (both covered with thorns) and creosote bush right where I had to climb around them to get to boat.
P1010164.jpg
[/IMG]

Then due to the way it was sitting on the trailer cockeyed, had a few more trailer brackets in the way of spraying....made for some interesting conditions trying to work around those with the can without getting any runs..... Oh, and wind....more wind Sunday and it came up around bottom of hull since I was working on lee side, so I was sort of spraying into a headwind.
P1010166.jpg
[/IMG]
I did sand this side to get rid of the brush marks in previous paint, at least on the bow and as far back as I could see em.

P1010165.jpg
[/IMG]

Results came out better altho far from perfect. But check out the shine.
