That durabak looks awesome B2, the bow cleat looks good too. Great idea to re-inforce the stern cleats as well. Wow, that durabak sticks like a weld if one has to use a hammer and chisel to remove it.

Can't help but be jealous of your weather, its been several degrees (Celsius) cooler here and summer starts in...what a week and a bit.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Making progress, B2. I don't know how others did the holes for floor rivets/screws, but I marked each rib on the hull - two marks for the width. Plunked the ply down, moved it into place and drilled through the wood/rib and screwed down. I couldn't pre-drill cause I positioned the wood much closer to the knee braces so the old wood was no use as a drilling template. I would use the 3/16 rivets for the stringers. You can't go wrong with the 3/16ths.

For gauge holes I got a hole saw at the Big Box. Even with the right sized hole saw I still ended up sanding to get the gauge in. If I do it again I'll use a sanding drum like Bwana said.

I painted under the transom plate and the plate also, only 5200 for the mounting holes. That's the last time I'll ever put that thing back on. Next (if ever) time will be an AL plate.

And finally - The dash tray. I think the tray does give some gunnel to gunnel flex protection, especially since you will be doing ocean fishing. The dash wood is not very structural. If you still have the original wood it is some soft wood (at least mine is) mainly to hold the steering and gauges. I like having a place to throw stuff that won't end up on the floor.

From the looks of you chiseling the durabak, maybe you should use it to glue the SC together. Wicked stuff after it sets up

got a chalk line? Place a deck piece in, with stringers exposed..Snap a chalk line long the top. Screw down along the chalk line.
Add a panel, snap another line.

Also
Post a pic of those super duper leds lt up when you have a chance. I wanna see.
See you in a couple weeks! Aiiiiiiii-HAAAA-HAA-Wiiii Wiiii !!!

This could be trouble. lol

Barato, how much taller could the gas tank be? The one you have is 5-3/8" tall and 18 gallons, right? I was hoping for a 24 gallon in my Offshore. Any chance an 8" would fit under there?

No...chalk lines aren't trouble..they are fairly easy to use....

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

i think maybe he meant that me with any sort of tool with sharp edges and electric power is trouble....but yeah, that's a good idea. i was just going to liberally mark on floor boards with sharpie pen as i'll never see it once the Nautolex flooring is down. so i'm gathering that most of you just drilled new holes and dispensed with trying to hit the old pre-existing holes?

Don, the Chrysler is still part of the plan....it’s just leaning against a tree to rest while I do the tranny. I gave up on the underfloor tank plan cuz Moeller no longer makes the sole tank that would fit, even as a special order. You’d have to raise the floor somewhat to even fit a 7" thick tank, and then there’s clearance for the fittings. You could make it work if you raised the floor slightly (think Jas’ “bottom feeder NASA honeycomb” flooring plan with the 2" foam cut out for tank clearance) and positioned something over it (console? Storage locker?) that would allow for fitting clearance. I just went with 18 gal stock size/shape tank under splashwell and will add another in bow, size and precise location TBA. As far as the durabak being hot, based on what I’ve gotten so far with impromptu “feel tests”, it’s probably significantly better than alum painted in similar color and I think better than the Tuffcoat on the Lone Star. If you’re really curious, I can do some side by side testing with pieces painted in each.

FNM and GA, what makes those chisel pics more impressive is that this degree of adhesion was achieved with surface prep consisting of leaving maybe 3/8-1/2" of dirt(I was wrong when I said 1") , slightly damp, on the surface, through which the globs of durabak had to penetrate to even REACH the aluminum. Removing this stuff will make expandofoam look easy, so I hope I don’t ever have to. Decided to reinf the rear cleats too since I may have to set 2 anchors some time to accommodate tide swings. I redid the cleat reinf in ?" ply and just over the size of cleat base as I decided that what I had was gross overkill, would eat up too much space under gunwale, and also I didn’t have any SS machine screws long enough for the 3/4".......it still will have to tear the alum gunwale apart before the cleat parts company with the boat.

Kev, I hope you know I’ve been doing all this hull prep work in your honor, so we can turn the Holiday into a giant ice bucket to keep the beer cold........ I think those LED strings might be too bright for inside my console unless I want it to double as a clandestine garden! But they’ll work great under bow, and in cabin of Starchief.

Just checked the weather and we’re due for rain this weekend. So much for 3 weeks til the monsoons. Used to be you could set your watch by the weather patterns out here. But since last year’s scare with the fire getting real close to our cabin, I LOVE rain............

lol...I can not drink that muc beer my friend..But ya know..we could keep the beer cold in the boat, and grill carne asada on the topside..
I will bring you a set of LEDs that are like me, not so bright.
They will be in the warm spectrum, 2700-3000 k.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

ya know, that might be a new answer for things to do with tin boats that you can't get a title on*....SOLAR COOKER! this last week has me wondering about painting the bare-alum topside trim with white enamel. in the summer sun here, even white alum gets pretty hot. hope it's better when the hull is immersed in water

and that was not a complaint on the LEDs.....good cabin lighting in the Starchief will make the Admiral very happy.

*i had been contemplating telling the DMV lady that if we couldn't get title on this boat, i was planning on just saving it til i die and then using it for viking funeral on the Rio Grande........

I think when I painted the topsides on my Holiday it was 102 with the humidity factored into the heat index.
Been out on her in the same weather and you can NOT let any bare skin come into contact with the any part of the hull above the waterline..

I will probably delete this as those glassers like to troll tin can alley and store little comments away like that for ammo to use against us

Kev, your nose is growing cause you know tin is COOL. When I had a glasser I had to wear long johns all summer long because It just wouldn't heat up in the sun. Yeah, that's right. I was never hot on the glasser!

No worries CBK - just hook up one of those garden watering systems to constantly spray a fine mist of water on the metal! It'll be cool as the water your boating in! Bonus: Glasser's don't really like water long term anyway --- which is kind of ironic.... I once had a John Deere snowmobile that didn't like the cold!!

Lol..the water temp in the gulf is a brisk 85+ degrees in the summer..I have seen steam come off the hull right after a small tropical rain.

Making some real nice progress there B2. The coating you used should be real durable.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

i was thinking about an idea for bottom feeder topside coating that would stay cool and not cost a fortune. Lowe's sells mulch made of shredded old tires which would likely work for traction. i wonder what would happen if you stirred some of that into the white elastomeric roof coating......?? the white roof coat gets applied on metal roofs so it has to be able to adhere to metal with proper prep. just thinking out loud, and i may be full o carp again, but......

How do you keep the rubber clean? If you get any fish guts or bait parts on the surface and then over the course of the day it becomes sun baked... not so good :(

Those rubber particles will be too big which would make for a very rough deck (I kinda played with that idea too).;)

i looked at a bag at Lowe's last night and think you're right Jas. oh well.

got a little done the last few nights. confronted a big gumption trap (take a hole saw and jigsaw to my hull???!!!)......cut the openings to line up with the rod holders in the vertical bulkhead
