CFW--
thanks for info. yeah, i found franz shortly after i posted that....i think our esteemed moderator suggested him....and have since sent a lot of $ his way. nothing like the amount of expertise i've gotten though....very helpful guy with even weird Qs. and i like the engineering on sevl things compared to OMCs. i wonder what will happen to parts support for these when he retires or runs out of NOS parts, though............i figure i can run it long enough to save the $ for an etec or 4 stroke. we'll see.

Don--

the big JB was for patching the copious previous-owner holes in gunwales with scrap bits of Lone Star. plus when i saw that tube, i just knew it was "me"..........

decided to ditch the Holiday side panels when i made the decision to convert er to center console (unfortunately AFTER i'd dropped abt $100 on vinyl to recover em)....the old ones were not as usable as i'd thought. what i ended up doing is making new, shorter ones that will extend forward from the sliding doors only as far as the vertical bulkhead about 1/2way forward and won't come much above the level of the "shelf" under gunwales.

Sound interesting, can't wait to see it.

Wow, B2 love the extra large JB weld. I've been using that stuff for... 3 or so decades now and my Gal was so impressed with it she slapped some around the house to fix cracked sliding door handles. I also used it to fix broken fishing rod tips, which, unfortunately is an on-going thing. I have never seen tubes that big though, good score!!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

my TIG-welder buddy sneers at the stuff, but i once used it to reconstruct an engine case on a neighbor kid's sportbike after he pitched it....we had to make flat surface for gasket sealing and replace a smashed area with threaded boss in it, so we actually had to cut n thread it. fix was still holding fine and not leaking oil when he sold bike a couple of years later.

hoping to make some progress on the boat tonight. work has been such a meatgrinder lately that i come home and just stare at the wall. also not as young as i used to be.

Boy can I relate to that comment, work can really get in the way of boat building!!!

You need to push through. If you stop I'll likely stop, we're all in this together. Seriously though, I see you working on the 18 footer and it makes me want to wrap up the Scamp and tear into the Offshore.

I did another coat on the inside of the Scamp, looking pretty fly, er tight, you know good.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

i'll keep at it. just been overwhelmed the last few daze. plus the heat...over 100 every day lately and it's still mid 80s at midnight here, plus highest humidity time of the year. i also need to do some more tree trimming etc so i can move that travel trailer down here, and do a bunch of PM on my commuter bike so i can quit taking the 4WD to work.

i'm now looking for a 14' tinnie for old-men-on-retirement-budget bottom fishing.....my fishing buddy and i will both be on <$20K/yr in a few years. it's funny, these starcrafts have turned me into a tin snob. now that i know more about how tin boats are constructed from takin em apart, i can see how sturdily built the SCs are compared to most other brands. more ribs, more stringers, one-piece hull skin (no seam at the keel to leak), transom wood the full width of transom and tied into the "knee brace" that connects stern to bottom, multiple knee braces in bigger models, etc.etc. looked at one $50 tinnie in ABQ but it looked so flimsy compared to a SC that my sense of quality even trumped my cheepness.

That's funny. 14' boats are very versatile, I'm hoping to upgrade Zach to a 14' Mariner in the future. He wants a bass boat, unfortunately I don't have 15K for a used beat up one or 30K for a new one. I agree Starcraft boats a very well built, I'm a Tin snob and SC snob now.

100 degrees is hot, it's not boat building weather, it's siesta time.

that wood flooring is looking good! got to love that jb weld, and the super economy size:D can't beat that with a stick. my first boat had a evinrude 60 that the PO must have over reved and cracked the casing. I cleaned it up and added several layers of jb smoothed it out and painted to match and never had a problem for the 8 years I owned it, good stuff!

JB is awesome stuff. I've seen people repair cracked blocks with it! It worked too! JB is the manly man's duct tape.

Another Tinnie, MBS and then a little:eek:. Envious, moi? Yep. I wish I lived out of the city, oh yes I do.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

going to look at the 14' was a comedy of Murphy. i realize when i'm almost at seller's house that i'd forgotten to stop at the ATM. so i call him and go looking for an ATM. no ATMs in that area. about a jillion payday and car-title loan places, but apparently no ATMs. i drive for literally 5+ miles, stoplight to stoplight in 102 degree heat, finally found an ATM. wait in line for 10 min. it EATS my stinkin card! so i had to call seller and cancel for that day. now i see that he's raised the price in the ad by $25. so we'll see.......interesting marketing technique.

i ain't paying anywhere near his asking unless he has a title and i suspect he doesn't. unlike most folks, i can use a title-less boat....in Mexico, anything under 4.5 meters (14 feet and a few inches) is treated as personal sporting equipment, as though it was scuba tank or surfvboard so no permit needed. we can troll all day in my buddy's 17' Whaler for about $10 (4 stroke kicker) but it costs $8 to launch and retrieve in San Carlos......whereas a 14' tinnie could be launched anywhere for free, esp with beach wheels

OK, a few pics from the last few weeks' semi-progress
my balmy shop:
P1010941.jpg

i wasn't lying about 95+ degrees. getting lots of practice doing resin n varnish either butt naked or close to it (don't worry, no white legs of death pix coming....)

i'd been looking for a newer compressor to replace the tired old 3/4hp that i'd been using for a portable since i put the big'un in the garage. mentioned this to my buddy, who allowed as he had a spare compressor that he'd let me have for free. this is the same guy who's giving me the travel trailer. was looking for a smallish one. here's what i came home with. cost me a pizza and a 6 pack of beer.
P1010944.jpg

and USA made to boot! oil-type, 8.1 cfm at 40 psi. whoo ha! big upgrade from the Little Compressor That Couldn't....

obligatory Transom Fitting Pic

and i mounted the swim step since i was in the space of Steeling Self to Drill Holes in my Transom

SWMBO was not happy with having to climb into and out of the Portabote when we went diving so this should be a nice upgrade for both of us.....for me, it looks like stable platform for releasing billfish (assuming i ever catch one....)

Nice work

Epoxied that deck in place I see. That is never coming out again! :)

I have that same platform. I plan to reuse it too because the look of teak is a nice touch to the boat.

DH--

actually that;'s the just the epoxy coating on the floor sections you're seeing. they've come out again since that pic so i can do the flotation and wiring work under the floor. still shooting for a Sea of Cortez splash date of columbus day. we'll see. it may be the portabote again for that trip, or a 14' tinnie if i find a good one at a price i like.

yeah, i love teak and any other kind of wood on a boat, even as impractical as it is. i've already accepted that my use of so much means a top $ cover will be a necessity to avoid having to revarnish everything on my TIN SKIFF every 6 months!

talked to the local guy with the 14' and no, he doesn't have a title. he just relies on staying away from where the watercops roam. so i'm going to think on it. there is a LOT bigger selection in ABQ area in all price ranges.

Hey B - She's coming around real nice. Swim platform is a nice touch and from a good source, too. ;) Careful slingin' resin and varnish. Wear a loincloth at least. Don't want parts permanently attached to the wrong place.

not much done last few daze....pix of test fitting and measuring ain't that exciting, i fear. forecast here is for >100 for next 4-5 days so i'm off to work on the Ship o'the Mountains (the 12x18 cabin) where the highs are forecast to be about 80. y'all have a great weekend and take your boats out or at least make some vroom vroom noises.
