Jas, it must have been the part about trying to chew gum at the same time... I blame it all on my mom-- when i was a little kid and cut myself, she always told me not to cry but to appreciate the opportunity to check that your blood color was good and you weren't anemic--no joke. i seem to have developed a pretty cavalier attitude toward the sight of my own blood. did i mention i like tin boats? ;)

no more work last night on boat, got distracted prepping reels for the MEmorial Day trip to Mexico. i've pretty much officially admitted to myself that the SC ain't gonna be ready for this trip, so work on it will be interspersed with prep work on truck, portabote, and fishing gear. replacement tackle in San Carlos is pretty pricey so i try to take all i might possibly need. for a week of saltwater fishing where the catch might vary from 2 lb cudas to 250 lb striped marlin, this means quite a few rods. and you don't even want to know how many pounds of lures....those 4-6+ oz iron jigs add up real fast.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

another one of those "learn from my stupidity" type items:(i seem to post a lot of these )

in prep for maybe painting the hull, i pulled the end caps off side rub rail a while back. this means that i also pulled the screws holding em in place. i didn't pull the rail itself, as i figured i could mask around it OK for the quality of job i was gonna do. this means that with no screw holding the 47 yr old rubber in place, it was free to yield to its urges to shrink.

now i have rubber that's shrunk about 3" on each side. anyone have any suggestions on stretching it back into shape? it's in good shape for age and i was going to reuse it, and IIRC, the replacement stuff will be about $3/foot x maybe 24' total.

You know, I seem to remember that same thing happening to lakelover actually.

I'm thinking throw them in a bucket of hot water or lay themout in the sun - then two guys pull em and stretch em eh?

Do you have one piece rub rail from stern to bow and back the other side? Mine is - so you could cut the rubber under the bow cap, pull it back to the stern until the cap covers it and screw or rivet the stern ends and the two new front ends. Add the caps and done. If you already have two piecers, forget about it unless you can jog it back and forth to still get enough under the caps.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

some days i think that beggar Murph really has it in for me. walking back from lunch, i ran into a sign post in front of the fed bldg really hard....split head open and bruised hip. so now i'm on concussion watch.

i didn't tell the nurse that my evening plans involved wallowing in xylene fumes, again...... i did get a good laugh when she asked if my tetanus was up to date. hey nice lady, that is the other requirement besides pix (GREG........??????) for Starmada membership.

almost no work last night...i cut two sticks of molding. i did notice that the wood pad for my kicker bracket now weighs substantially more than it did before i soaked 6+ oz of resin-xylene mix into it, with almost no coating on the surface(it all soaked in). i was watching the wood just drink it in. a few coats of spar to UV-protect the poxy and i don't expect to have more deterioration problems with that any time soon.

Dude... I think you were just so thrown off from the furlong on Friday that you had one of those "out of body" experiences, forgot where you were, who you were, and how you got there! At least you didn't poop yourself!:embarassed: Glad you're still able to function!!!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

GA, this is the one halfway down the side of hull, not the one at "beltline", so yeah, it's 2 piece.

IM, i probably sound even more cavalier than i am about it...i did stop by my doc friend's office and have him take a look at it. Looks fine now, just hurts to put a motorcycle helmet on. when doc suggested i might want to drive truck for a few daze, i was asking him if a colostomy bag was next (i just HATE to get dragged off my bike and into driving a cage...).

and i found my missing digicam (why there's been a dearth of pix lately) but apparently the battery popped out for parts unknown when it hit the concrete...should have pix Monday if i can find the durn thing

B2 - I had a 50/50 chance of picking the right rub rail. ;) Try softening the rubber in a bucket of hot water and stretch it to fit. Can you do that one-handed?

Look for something else. Then the battery will pop up. Unless Murphy stepped on it.

B2 --- Glad you're doing a little better --- nice cut there! Yikes! Suppose an occupational hazard though...

+1 with what GA said about the warm water and soap for the rub rail situation. Might even consider a hair dryer to warm it up --- prolly not a good idea to do at the same time with the warm water and soap --- especially given recent circumstances! :D

Have a great weekend man!

Mix together ;
one guy in a desperate hurry to finish his tinnie
(1) 5 gallon bucket of water
a hairdryer
beers????

Don't do it Bruce!!! Flesh wounds are one thing but electricity.......... I really want to see this boat done. You're making good progress, it took me a while to catch up on your antics, er injuries, er progress. Boat looks good dude. Deadlines never seem to be met, this only causes stress. Murphy feeds off this, remember this is supposed to be fun.

Good luck
Don

B2 I think it's time you shook off Murphy and sent him on to some guy that's rebuilding a Glass boat, I think it's there turn, as he has had a real run over here in the tinny section. Hope all your wounds heal up quick.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Still no camera battery despite crawling around for an hour looking, so no pix, but I had a hell of a weekend. I live on an acre, but the house, apt/”boathouse”, and both driveways are right at front of acre and the rest has been mostly useless. At least, useless to me; the one batch of neighbors like tossing their beer bottles on the back 40 so the ground looks paved with broken glass. This has resulted in me climbing over things a lot and not much space to work on boats in the driveway.....recently couldn’t even get under shade when I changed oil on my bike despite a 2 car garage, a carport, and 2 workshops.

I’d agreed to let a guy store his motor home here for a few months, which was the “catalyst” I’d needed to push me into finally building a storage lot back there. So....cleared all cactus and chaparral bush from about a 40x80' space, leveled ground, installed 2 gates off the side street for total of 20' width, and built up slope on the “driveway” to make it more gradual. Sunday, we went and got the 35' motor home.....dunno if you’ve ever driven an old motor home with worn steering and wasted shocks, but it’s a pretty scary experience. Most things which respond that slowly to the helm have an ocean to maneuver in....... Funk odor from rotting stuff in fridge didn’t help. Truly a surreal experience, and if I’d ever had any ideas of getting one of these things, no more.

But now I have a place to move the boats I’m not currently working on (Lone Star, Starchief, and catamaran)(and maybe eventually the 25' sailboat). I also have cactus spines in every part of my body and am eating ibu like candy, but no more injuries more serious than that. Ordering a motion sensor light/security cam from Northern to put on top of a 10' power pole next to the outhouse, and I plan on running a 110v power drop to it as well to facilitate lights, battery charging, etc. I also talked to the neighbors again about their broken glass and hope they’ll quit this time. If not, I’ll have pix to give the sheriff on who they need to talk to about it.......

other than that, I just epoxied up a storm on the Holiner console and related bits. I did get the floor backers at the junctions of floor sections done and am sneaking up on being ready to drop the floors in for good. The 2d bilge pump arrived and wait til you see pix; it dwarfs the 2000gph Rule unit I had. Bracket for that one will have to be pretty stout, but I have something started. Finally, put fresh line on 4 of the rods and got some prep work done. And while I was away, those darn elves got on fleebay and bought me sevl hundred $ worth of offshore trolling lures so this morning I had to pay THAT piper.

anyway, pix manana, I hope.

Hey - Take the computer away from the elves and put them to work picking up glass and pulling cactus stickers out of you. If they refuse send them to bed with no supper.

Sounds like you got motivated on the homestead and the Holiner too.

Bruce man! I would really like to see the pics of the new area you created... trying to get a visual... but it is a tough for Canuk who see's snow for 1/3rd of the year!!! :)

Sounds like you were crazy busy this weekend --- holy cow! Yard, Cleanup, Boat... cover's most of it,... throw in a little car and motorcycle work and that's a full weekend!

Pics man... rules are rules!

We wait patiently.....

rules......are made to be treated as advisory. patiently my left nalga.;)

still no battery. and all i got done last night was reinstalling the alum angle braces in inside corners of console....more of a job than it sounds, since the fiberglass and epoxy resin added since i drilled the holes made the holes not line up very well. 2 1/2 hrs to install 2 dozen #10 screws. i also was very brave and cleaned out the fridge on the motor home so the owner doesn't have a really hideous surprise in the fridge in a few months. another urban myth laid to rest: yes, hot links will decay, despite what you may have heard......

hey Don--- i was trying to see if i could get some power generation out of all the rotting stuff in the fridge, but no matter where i stuck the jumper wires, the camera wouldn't power up. y'all should be careful what you wish for....soon enough, i'll be back to hogging the forum with my excessive pix of minute and boring tasks (tm) soon enough. still no battery for the Oly but i'll see if can get the other camera to power up.

B2 - Watch "Back To The Future" and see how Doc Brown converted the DeLorean to run on garbage. Did you wear a HazMat suit?
