Re: The 2010 FrankenMerc Project

Just got the heads back for the second time. Took another .030 off. Too much squish band so I'm trying to compensate for it. I might get to try it out this weekend.

If the motor is making any addition hp it should easily spin a larger prop. Why not increase the pitch size, lower the rpm back into power/torque curve and pick up 5 mph??

The curve starts later on this motor so the hole shot isn't as sharp as a stocker but still decent. Carbs and squish band are what I'm working out now. It's more fine tuning at this point than anything else. I want my max to be around 7500 with a 21 lop eared prop like the Laser II I have on it now. I need the stern lift.

I've got the 1.87:1 gearcase with a 19 Laser II so it's about the same as a 2:1 with a 21. Maybe a little less top end bite and I may bump it. We'll see how this weekend goes.

It kind of sux now because I need to drive 2 hours to get to a lake without a speed limit. The one that's 1/2 hour away caps at 50 and usually I can sneak around and get in a good run. The water cops love Labor Day weekend so I won't be going there.

What did you do to change curve???:confused:
There are a lot of things that I did but didn't show. I got tired of the flack so I just stopped showing the controversial stuff. Whats in this thread is just enough for the average joe's shop and wallet.

Re: The 2010 FrankenMerc Project

Just remember if your cutting the heads flat you are not changing any squish as distance stays the same(top of head and top of piston),your just reducing the cc's in chamber. Also keep in mind that is a idle relief block and add 5-8 psi to your cranking pressure reading as compression builds as engine runs... and if your doing a jet dont get a Hamilton get a American Turbine as they are not Hp restrictive, lighter in weight, more features and better impeller choices. That what I ran on my Texas tunnel with 505 ci big block. Ran a "c" cut impeller @ 6800 rpms = 111-116 mph in 1/4 mile(KDBA):D:D:D

Re: The 2010 FrankenMerc Project

You're correct, cutting the heads does not change the squish band physically but it does cause the rise in cylinder pressure that will hold the squish fuel back closer to the edge of the piston while at the same time compensating by reducing the overall cylinder volume.

In fact, it works very well, I just put the heads back on it and changed the jets dropping it from .060 mains to .058's and increasing the idle air's from .054 to .060.

Compression is now 140 and idle head temp is 150 on the hose with 2lbs of water pressure at the pump.I have low water volume and pressure at the house.

If the engine holds true to form, that should be about 135 degrees in gear idle and 4-6 lbs in the water with a WOT temp of about 145-150 @ 15lbs.

The idle air screws are now functional on the carbs and the timing is setting at around 4 ATDC @ 900 RPM's in the tank. This should be telling me that the mains and the idles are sized correctly but I will keep a keen eye on the temps and plugs tomorrow when I take it out for a spin.

At this point someone is probably scratching their head asking why did he have to lean it down? It's simple really. Remember all the work I did opening up the rod slots (I actually did a lot more than you saw) and then there was the stuffing of the crankcase, cutting the front half down, adding in the spacer and then there are the finger ports (didn't show you that either). All these things equate to one thing.. They get the fuel into the cylinders way more efficiently.

The exahust chest is also cut between a drag cut and a sport cut. I showed you a gentle easing that I knew would improve things but not change the ability to idle in gear properly. I have another motor cut like that. When I sell this boat it will be on it.

O.K., O.K., so now your saying why didn't he show us this other stuff... That's simple too.. It's controversial and not going to work out well for most of you that still want to fish with your motors. The stuff in this post will get you a good sport motor.

So now you know why I can hit the speeds and RPM's I'm hitting with this motor on my boat. Hopefully I'll make the 8,000 RPM mark tomorrow. If not... I've got another one on the stand waiting for a break in.

sschefer,

Now the FrankenMerc is really sounding scary like a Monster.

After all this what kind of HP increase do you realise (from stock) ?

Enjoy your little cruise :p

I don't know what the HP increase is, I'd have to dyno it to find that out. I actually don't think it's that important to know the number or even guess at it. I used to, but not anymore.

I think we'll all agree that it's what the motor does in application that matters. Once you've seen what the mods do in actual testing you can build a motor that will fit the need and be a much happier boater.

I'm out the door on the way to the lake.

Re: The 2010 FrankenMerc Project

Took Frank out Friday and hit the 8,000 RPM mark. Just barely and only for a brief moment when everything hit just right. Got the adrenalin pumpin pretty good trying handle this hull at that speed. The last number I saw on the GPS before I got too busy to look was 64 mph. I didn't set any speed records but it was way too fast for this hull. Guess I'm going to have to buy that bass boat!

I take ya up on it as I am coming to Petaluma in November to visit some business contacts and friends..and dont need underwear as 60 something mph is slow in my neck of woods..

Cool, you're certainly welcome. There won't be any motor work going on (I hope) because I should be starting my 21' scratch build All welded Aluminum river rocket/cruiser.

I just sold the last V-6 I had in the shop last night. Brian (the buyer) came by and we put it on his new to him 17' Champ. This was one I took in on trade for old faithful that I replaced with Frank.

Re: The 2010 FrankenMerc Project

The FrankenMerc sold today. My Boat went with it. I got a really fair price for them that I couldn't turn down. Suprised the heck out of me considering the season is over and all. I did keep the new 9.9 kicker so I still have a motor but I can't say I have a boat until I lay the keel on the new one.

It was a fun run for sure.

Go Giants!!!!!!!!

wow, nice job i build hipo chevys but you outboard guys are fanatics 65 mph in a fishing boat,8000 rpm.my hats off to you.the information you have supplied is dangerous to the average mechanic it is for the top 10 percent maybe, but highly pleaserable to read thank you.

My background is small block chevy (sbc) frame twisters also. I'm looking at a big block for my next project but I'm getting old and I'm looking for reliability so it will probably be a 8.2l GM/Kodiak Marine crate motor. I might go with the supercharged version, I'm not sure yet.

i also have a passion for hipo chevys,i understand airflow and velocitys, rod ratios, rockerarm geometry, cam profiles, the importance of matched parts from carb to gear ratios.its not often to find someone that shares my interest or obsession. its easy to tell when you hear someone talk how much or little they know.and then shutup and listen and learn ,i would love to watch you put a sbc together your attention to detail is what seperates the average to the exceptional. i had to smile when you said how you ommitted some more complex procedres to avoid the debates when people dont understand or know what your talking about it can bog you down, instead of shutting up and learning goodluck with your fishing.some of us do understand and thank you for taking the time to enlighten us
