When I finally get there I will be roll tipping my hull. I do not plan on investing in any spray equipment so I want the best paint available for this method. For now, lets assume I don't care about cost, although it will be a factor when making a decision amongst the best paint. I will not be spraying. I will not be gel coating.

Some I have been looking at:

Interlux Perfection: Seems to be a lot of good information out therer and easy to order.

Supermarine: A good deal of information in their spec sheets. I would love to hear someone who has real experience with this.

Sterling: This stuff looks awesome from some of the pics I found on the internet. Can you add color to it? Where is the best place to buy it.

Others: ?

This is my order of importance when making my final decision:

1) Ease of application and self leveling properties
2) Durability
3) Cost

Your input is highly valued. thanks

AwlGrip for me.

I agree.

Sterling or AwlGrip ..same stuff Jones01. Were not talking "awlcraft2000" which is Spray only..the LP AWLGRIP has the specialized reducers and hardeners for "roll/brush" applications.

If you do care about Cost ..then AG or Sterling might not be your best bet. There are primers and surface prep that could empty out a thin(ish) pocket book.

YD.

PS. What boat are you working with ? Cost VS. size sometimes does matter.

Re: The Best Roll & Tip Paint

I've used Awlgrip, Interlux Perfection, and Supermarine.

Awlgrip is nice stuff. Pricey, but nice. If you use it, follow their application guidelines EXACTLY- Use their primers, etc. It's EXPENSIVE stuff- You don't want to mess it up!

Perfection seemed similar, in a lot of ways. Great surface finish, too. And, easy to get. The biggest drawback for me is the VERY limited range of colors, which may or may not be an issue for you.

I've been using Supermarine paints a lot recently- And I have been very impressed by them. I used one of their single part paints (SM-1000) on my last restoration job, and once I got the application 'down', really liked it. I sprayed most of the boat, but some other parts (splash well, seat backs, etc) were rolled and tipped- And they turned out as good as the sprayed. I'm tempted to use the roll and tip on the next boat I'm painting, rather than spraying, as I really don't have a great place to spray!

The next boat will be painted with one of Supermarines two-part urethanes. I've heard good reports about them, and the price is right. The color range is also unlimited, a big PLUS since I'm painting the boat pink (Don't laugh!). They are based on an industrial formula, and have been field proven in that application. I've seen the result on boats, too- And they look great. They are supposed to behave very well in a 'roll and tip' application. I guess we'll see!!

Re: The Best Roll & Tip Paint

All good paint jobs begin with a good prep.
I had great results rolling my jonboat with MSA (Martin Senour Paint) 2 part acrylic enamel from NAPA.
It was easy to mix, covered well, and dried quickly without sagging. It's also very tough.
About $80/ gallon as I recall.

Jon, I have posted a few questions re: painting my fiberglass boat and have gotten no response. Just wondering if I was properly posting my questions. A little help?

These responses are very helpful.

The paint in that video looks awesome. The music alone makes me feel as though it should be easy. I've read mixed reviews on the durability of the brightsides. If the Perfection line goes on just as well Interlux is certainlay a contender. Have you used either paint before?

Sasto
I should have put AwlGrip on the list too. I think l've been looking at the wrong product line. The one I was looking at was specifically for spraying.

YD
After you wrote that the AG and Sterling are the same basic paint I started searching. In another forum (no comparison to this one to be sure:)) it was recommended to use the Sterling reducer with the AG paint. If it is the same chemical structure it should work, I'm just wondering if you or anyone else can confirm this statement with personal experience. Response to your other question: My hull is 17' century.

Andrew
Wow, I didn't think someone would respond who has personally used all three. What a great comparison using your own personal experience. On the Supermarine do you find that the SM-1000 has good durability? For this Brand I was also looking at the SM-266 2part urethane. The specs say it can be rolled and brushed, however the specs do not specifically mention the use of the rolling reducer. I think I will give the manufacture a call. I like the idea of the 2part paints for the durability, but maybe I am off base.
The Interlux may be out because of the color limitation as you have mentioned (unless there is a way to color it). I am looking to use a burgundy that was on the boat originally. AG and SM have the color I need.

Arks
I will have to look into that NAPA paint. I have read its use on this forum before. Your comments on its durability and application are also very helpful. I will research this some more. The boat looks great and thanks for the pic.

Again, thanks all, this is very helpful. I am looking forward to more feedback.

I dont recommend it. I would not know why it was recommended in the first place ( better flow etc ? ).

Its like Awlcraft2000 and Imron .. they are basically the same product..but with different mix ratios.

Stick with the same product line throughout the process ( including the primers if needed ) IMO.

Re: The Best Roll & Tip Paint

I did roll & roll on mine, using Pettit Easypoxy. I can't say how its durability will be as I just finished it in November & only been out once, but it looks good. Cost was a factor for me, but if it isn't for you, I'd go with one of the recommendations above from those who know their stuff.

So far, the durability of the SM-1000 has been great. It is the only single part marine paint I've found that can be submerged long term as well. Application was a bit more tricky than some other paints, it is very sensitive to thickness of application, and proper drying times.

They don't have different reducers for different applications, just different reducers for the different paints. Just make sure you get the proper one.

I plan to use SM-266 on the next projects- I'm prepping a hull for it now. I think that I am going to roll and tip it, I could spray but I have a few reasons on this particular project not to. They have told me that it does an excellent job when rolled on.

I DID have to cut & buff mine to get the maximum gloss, but it does look GREAT. You can see the painting process starting on page three of my thread- http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=355668&page=3

I am also switching to the Epoxy primer for the current project.

This is the boat I did with Interlux Perfection- a '74 or so Cape Dory Typhoon-

I liked it, it went on well (I rolled and tipped, but much of it was non-skid), and lasted. I can't tell you what the current condition is, As I sold the boat a while ago. The biggest drawback in my book is the lack of color options.

Have to go with Perfection here. Amazing paint...all you have to do is roll it out and re roll the stiple. It flattens like glass and is as hard as nails. Almost any paint should be a two part poly..singles just cannot take the abuse a two part does. Now that's just a opinion..;)

I want you all to know how much I appreciate your suggestions and experience. Your boats are beautiful too. This is becoming a one stop shopping place for roll and tipping. Thanks staying focused on the original question as the information you are providing is helping me a great deal:).

Re: The Best Roll & Tip Paint

I worked for a couple high end ($5 mil and up) custom sportfish manufacturers. They used tommays method. 545 and AwlGrip.

We once rolled a smaller 30footer using Imron and AwlGrip brushing reducer. She was pretty leaving the shop. Haven't seen her in years.

Good Luck!

Are you suggesting an application of Imron Paint base ( acrylic urethane ) mixed with AwlGrips( linear polyurethane ) brushing reducer is a sound applied method of mix ? Just wondering..

Nah...YD....not at all. AwlGrip.

We did use Imron as a suggestion from the local Marine Paint dealer. If I remember correctly, the owner origionally wanted the bottom painted with anti-foul, but changed his mind after we already sanded and preped the bottom. We rolled the Imron instead of spraying her. That boat went to the Bahamas, never to be seen again. How long do you think this method lasted? I'm not a painter, but have always wondered about this boat.

Re: The Best Roll & Tip Paint

tommays, I diggin' that shine. I really like the white color, do you remember what is was?

What I am gathering so far is that I will be very happy with the result from any of the brands listed. Color choice may be what decides my direction. I am probably about a month (make that two since everything takes twice as long) from rolling out some primer on the inside of the hull, which is where I want to start learning my painting technique. So that mean I needs to make a decision what system to use very soon. This thread is helping a lot.

Has anyone painted with a burgundy, or a mahogony color? I haven't decided this color for sure, but I would love to see it if there are some pictures out there.

The Pettit Easypoxy I used was named Burgundy, but to me was more of a deep blood red, not quite as dark as I expected. (Probably irrelevant since you'll probably go with a two-part paint.)
