It is funny that Trevor wins, but he is too young to "drink" to the celebration!

Unfortunately, I missed the race. Upon returning home last nite I went to this thread to get the action and results before turning on the TV. You guys didn't let me down! :)

Re: The Daytona 500 thread!!!

I noticed that there was no champagne at the celebration, how funny!

That little sucker had a fast car and good skills. I just think it was one of the dumbest looking races ever. Everyone was buddied up, looked like someone glued them together. Race for your own win, guys. No talking on 15 different frequencies with other drivers during the race, etc. In no other sport do they do that, and NASCAR need be no different.

The race was ok, but the buddy system looked stupid. It also caused a record number of accidents. They need to race for themselves, like they used to. 16 cautions in that race, 4 more than the old record. You've GOT to get rid of the buddy system.

The only way that will happen is NASCAR will have to change the cars again. Right now, the buddy system is the fastest way around the track. Drafting on superspeedways has been the only way to be competitive. Just so happens now, the best way is with only 2 cars.

+1 ^^^^^ with the exception that the only way to "fix" the cars for Daytona and Talladega, and also keep them under 200 MPH, IMHO is to remove the splitter and the spoiler. Then they could have their horsepower back, but it would just be a different version of the same demolition derby. The problem is the tracks, not the cars.

Actually QC the splitter is gone now, if you check the highlights everyone that went into the grass the lower part of the body no longer gets eaten up, its more like a traditional part of the body designed to wear into the ride height of the car now. Traditional as in race traditional. I think the only way to slow these guys down is to shorten the tracks, we don't have these issues on the smaller tracks only the super speedways. This weekends Phoenix race should be just what the Doctor ordered, everyone will settle down and drafting won't be an issue, they can beat each other up and race just like old times!

But they will never take out the super speedways, I like the idea of flattening them though, no more pin it till the end if they have to get on the brakes in the turns that will slow the average lap times down considerably.

ECR motors were given the order to not run part throttle near the end of Daytona, so they had to let the car they were pushing roll off the throttle and force the pushing car to load their motor.

When it comes down to it fellas its just one type of race track that NASCAR races at, were stuck with them, I have my favorite kind of racetracks like martinsville and bristol, those I don't miss, they are action packed from green to checker. Daytona is the biggest because it is the start of the season and it sets the tone for the year, this year is going to be one of the best years ever!!

Re: The Daytona 500 thread!!!

Bear with me here. Yes the "splitter" is built in, but the thing that keeps air from going under the car, used to be the "valance". Doesn't matter what we call it, but to my point. The only way to slow them down other than the plate is to lower speeds going into and coming out of the corners. The reason we don't have speeds exceeding 200 MPH most other places (we get to 207 entering turn 1 at Fontana) is that there is not enough time (or distance) to get to that speed when you come out of a corner at say Darlington at 140ish. Just can't get up to 200+ and then also decelerate before entering the next turn.

Sooooooo, if the cars handled like carp (no front air dam, splitter, valance thing and no spoiler) then they would come out of the corners much slower and then hammer it home down the straight (like a short track) and there you go.

Another way to think about it is to imagine the cars in the 60s. They didn't need plates and yes, they didn't have as much horsepower, but they actually needed brakes and handling to win at Daytona.

This will never happen, but the only other solution is to flatten the corners to achieve the same thing . . . Slower speeds going through the turn, so they can't get much past 200 MPH down the straights. California, Michigan and Pocono are great examples. Big tracks with no need for the plates.

Edit: maybe we should call the "Splitter" the Lawn Mower . . . ;)

Re: The Daytona 500 thread!!!

Excellent points QC, I think the best part of Daytona is I was on the phone with my buddies that run a sportsmens car here in Colorado 10 times during the race!! We start racing here in about a month. I think the Super Late Model team is done, just not enough money to support it in this economy which is good and bad, good because it means I get more time with the family but bad because I don't get to travel to California, Oklahoma, Texas and Arizona to race for another season but Daytona sure has a way of getting the blood flowing!!

Lawn mower or Remover!! It looked like it was stripping the grass like turf! I was laughing my butt off every time a car went through the infield! Grass getting thrown 20 feet in the air by chunks!!

I laughed when they went through the white lettering, looked like an out of control snow plow! Of course I was watching the race from a location that still has 6 feet of snow on the ground! So it may not be quite as funny to others!!
