Old Helmet, I'm thinking about cleaning it up and painting it there's a bullet hole in it but I think its just from someone using as target practice, not sure though cause there is only one hole at about a 30 deg angle it pushed out the back and didn't go through and through

Hey Vegas, I couldn't believe it when I saw my folks still had my old firetruck, I thought it got destroyed when our old barn fell. Its actually not in that bad of shape, tires & running gear still good. It's rusty, has a few small dents, the back platform and steering wheel is a little bent.
The thing is knowing how I am, I'll spend $400 on the paint and re-lettering

Yep the 8mm GM with the steel but plate does give a kick, been there done that. I believe with the old Springfield Trapdoor you load the 45-70 rounds lighter, by how much I don't know. If its the gun I'm thinking of General Custer used it at the battle of little bighorn

As for the helmet, its definitely a bullet hole, until yesterday I hadn't seen it since I was a kid totally forgot about the hole in it.
As far as target practice, I'm not sure it is only one shot at least 30 cal looks like something must of slowed it down cause it went clean in and only put a protrusion on the the backside of it.
I'm kinda hoping it was target practice with it hanging on steel or something and not someones head.
I'm going to ask my brother, if anyone used it for a target it would have been him cause it wasn't me

Re: The Hijack Zone - Zombies Welcome

Yeah , That Springfield is original. I am not sure of the year. It was handed down from dad to son for several generations, at least 3-4 to get to him that I know of. The original bayonett for it is in his gun closet.

I don't know what the load is, but he gets 45-70 "Government".
HA HA HA Best quote... " My doe permits come in a box of twenty applications !!!"

That damn thing is a LLLL ooo nnn ggggggggg... rifle. It is not the carbine cavalry version. The barrel is almost 3 feet long, I think. I haven't been up to see him lately, but from memory the rifle is about 5' - 6' long. AND HEAVY.

Yes Steel Plate, no recoil pad. Gun is 100% as it came back then, just with a lot of use and wear.

A couple of years ago I pissed him off by wire tying one of my kid's training wheels to the barrel and told him, " Just to make it easier walking the mountain."
He calls it his beloved crowbar, and didn't appreciate it much.

Awesome childhood memory... My brother and I took our .22's ( I had the hornet) down the ledge behind his house, to the creek. It was terrible cold, and on the other bank was an ice "boulder" about 2-1/2 - 3 foot diameter. We were plinkin' away at it, chippin' it down. My dad come back from some stalking about, and he snuck up the ridge behind us. With no warning, he hit that thing dead center from about 150 yards out, and it exploded before our eyes. Then the laughter roaring down to the creek solved our mystery.

As much as that rifle hurts to fire, it really does, his Stevens broke my collar bone when I was 12 or so. Another fridgid day found him teaching me how to run rabbits. It is a side by side, with two triggers, 16 guage (good rabbit gun).

He had just given me the gun, and kicked up a snoeshoe about 10- 15 feet in front of me, out of a brush pile. I was mid step when it broke and ran, I was half leaning against a tree.

It was so damn cold that I had super thick gloves on. Can you see where this is going?

I pulled the front trigger, which fired the first barrel, while the recoil pinned my shoulder to the tree, and the stock and my shoulder seperated for a split second. My gloves were so thick, that the back of the front trigger pushed my gloved middle finger into the rear trigger, and fired the other barrel. That brought the stock crashing back into my collar bone.

Good times, Good times.

My wife is the only chick I had that my dad approved of. (Not that that made any difference to me) I married a Cherokee maiden. If I bring home fish, I hate to say it, she can fillet faster and cleaner than I can. I took her up to meet my dad a decade or so back. He and I went out for a liesurely walk and happen to come back dragging a carcass. It was really hot out, so hanging and aging was right out. He went to fire up the smoker for some of it.

She had the cape off before he even lit a match. I was surprised looking at her, when she asked me to hang it lower, where she could reach. With hack saw and blade in hand, she had half of the rear cut and ready to wrap, dad comes back in the barn, and he is just as stunned. Before the smoker was even buring even, they had the good cuts all done and just down to stew meat.

Later he smiled and said that's a keeper. I didn't tell him that she has competed throwing tomohawk's and that she told me exactly how she would handle it, if she ever caught me cheatin'.

Howz dat for hijacking and runnin off topic?

Hey KHR, Gotta love those childhood memories, even the painful ones (broken collarbone) are good ones it was time well spent and life experience. Hate to say it but I understand why your pop got upset especially if its a family heirloom, that gun is probably from the civil or Spanish American war I'm a little rusty on my gun history but if its not a carbine its probably from the Spanish American, Oops, note to self DON'T wire tie training wheels to barrel of gun!!! LOL I'm sorry That actually to funny, would of loved to see the expression on he face, then again maybe not.

Great story about the ice boulder, memories like that are priceless. Once we were all shooting tin cans when my pop bet us he could knock them all down with one bullet, when we took the bet he shot the 2x4 they were all sitting on  down they came lol

BTW, sorry bout the shoulder BUT snowshoes now that's good eating :D almost worth the collarbone lol

Hey man, I e-mailed you a a couple weeks ago to see if you wanted to go shooting at Brookhaven range. I sent it to the yahoo address you posted on my boat thread. If you want shoot me an e-mail we'll go shooting, I have to sight in my muzzle loader

As far as bringing the old stuff back to life, it here's a saying " birds of a feather flock together" Were all suckers for nostalgia, love to build & create, motor-heads + like for me its all in the "good" memories.
Heck I spent 10Gs this summer on a tractor in an effort to try to bring my parents property back to the way it was when I was a kid with my sisters and I singing Cherokee people Cherokee pride, at the top of our lungs walking to the pond ( never knew the real name to that song Lol). Don't have the time to spend mowing like when I was a kid, so I took the Tim Alan approach" More Power More Power " , cleared at least 50 acres of fields in 1 1/2 days getting older does have its advantages, money lol :D at my stage of the game work does NOT make me stronger :D
Here is something funny, I also have a old fiberglass rowboat ( guess you could put a trolling motor on her) up there named "Lady Lou Too", didn't measure it Looks about 10-12 ft seats 1 in the Bow 2 at the stern, 1 or 2 at the rowing station, depending on what type of rowing your doing. Transom rotted, weak around the oar locks from power rowing, we were wild kids used to see who could make it round the pond fastest :):) that's going to be my project for the spring. I'm going to bring it home one of these trips to start working on her.

Ah yes, sharing an e-mail address with your significant other. Let me know when you want to go again, I am in. I made it to dynagrout this weekend and got my fiberglass. I used your company name and just paid cash, you were right about the running yard prices too. He definetly has a lot of stuff there. 4 day weekend coming up so I should have an update on Sunday. Good luck this weekend with the new spot.

I'm not going to the range this weekend but probably next sunday. I have high expectations for this weekend with the new spot :) . I went to the new spot a total of 3 times this weekend and all I saw were lots of tails every time so it looks promising.
Yea, see what I mean about Dynagrout, his prices are good and you get alot more bang for the buck. I bought just a few yards of 1708 from him and it seems like I can wrap it around the boat a few times, well you saw what I had left after covering the deck & transom a few times, not bad for only buying 3 yards lol.
Good luck with your boat this weekend I'll be sure to look for your thread when I get back. I'm trying to leave for upstate on Thursday night if the wife lets me lol. I'll probably be back either sunday or monday depending how things go. If I wind up shooting on sunday, it will be monday before I butcher. But even after that I might stay to try to bad the elusive 6' black bear that I knew been roaming around for years that my neighbors Just now realized is there and also want it ( they got a real nice picture of it tearing their trail camera off the tree :D guess it don't like being photographed hehehe. The catch is, I know where its den is lol:D:).

Re: The Hijack Zone - Zombies Welcome

Hey HVAC ... It's a relief that your daughter is better. :)

I did some target shooting this weekend with my Ruger 10/22 Target bull barrel, target trigger and knocked the primer out of a 12 guage case at 50 meters. Absolutely tore up a 1/2 inch bullesye so you could not see any bulleye left after 10 shots. I bought the rifle as a regular 10/22 and swapped out the parts over time on e-bay trying to make it better...much like the boat.

My Savage 10FP .308 should be able to do the same but I can't get the same accuracy so I'm pissed. I should be able to hold 1 inch groups of less at a 100 but it's not predictable. I'm going to try some match grade ammo before I give up on it.

Tactical rifle my ***... If I was SWAT a lot of hostages would have eaten it if they were using this thing :)

PS I just finished watching Zombieland an hour ago so I'm on the gun theme.

So lets keep on the gun thing.....!!!!
In order... The 45 is my fav..so its #1

1940 something REMINGTON RAND US Gov Issue 1911 45 auto (pops bought in a hardware store out of a pickle barrel full of em, 25 bux in 1950's)

1960 sumthin Walther PP in 32..Pre ban, 100% Walther, not that Interarms stuff.

1960's Colt Officer Match Target revolvers, one in 38 spcl and a very rare full sized twin in 22 LR. (the blueing on these old Colts are 2nd to none)

Late 30's S&W 38/44 Outdoorsman..A 38 spl on the old S&W 44 frames..Predecesser to the 44 mag pistol..Pops hand made me a gun case, took this out of his collection and handed me this walnut box on my 18th birthday..I cherish that day and his smile as watched me open the box..I will never forget that day..ever.

1920's Colt Officer Model in 32-20...(Pops and I have never shot this one)

Ruger Super Blackhawk in Satin with Houge rubber grips..Cant hit a damm thing with this SOB..lol

S&W 686 357 mag

Early 1940 S&W Model 1917 45ACP Revolver..Gov issue, laynard ring, half moon clips..the original speed loader..lol

5 S&W Model 10's, 1 in nickel and 4 blue..(Pops had a soft spot for these things..I always said ANOTHER Model 10!!..lol)

Colt 357 Mag Border Patrol...

Old 1950's S&W K22..22LR revolver..99.9% perfect..Can put 6 holes in a 1/2 circle..

Ruger Mark 1 22 LR with bull barrel...wow..very accurate..but HATE the mag release..lol

1920's??? Remington Targetmaster in 22LR..Single shot bolt action AND ya have to pull a cocking pin for each shot...Pops brought this home from work when I was a kid, tossed it to me and said "I got this for ya, you need to re do the stock..I'll show ya how"...

Mossberg Rifle 22 LR semi auto..bought here in Florida awhile back..everything else is STILL back home in Pops Gun Closet....will bring em all out someday..but they are in very good hands..;)

Re: The Hijack Zone - Zombies Welcome

Thanks sprintst, yes were all very relieved I spoke to her today, its actually her 25th birthday today.

The 10/22 is a really nice rifle, for target shooting I have a Anschutz single shot target rifle (no clip) with redfield peeps
Silly question, with the Savage does it have a scope? If it has one you might want to check the mount, I had that problem with my Remington 742 carbine, went to the range, 1st shot bulls-eye, 2nd shot inch to left 3rd 1 1/2 left. I had gotten the gun off my buddy when he mounted the scope he didn't loc-tite the screws, well over time the screws loosened and scope moved with every shot
Might be worth a shot to check it no pun intended

Wow Kev that's quite a collection especially the side arms, hum 5 model 10's, one for every day of the week? a man after my heart, my wife keeps asking me how many I actually need every time I bring home a new one lol. I tried to explain different guns different uses. Although I'm still trying to explain why I needed an AR15 :D

At the Starcraft get together we should get some target practise in there. I don't think I can get my collection across the border but can buy some targets and ammo.

My buddy brought a paint filled mannequin head to the range once. Kind of fits the L4D theme.

PS I'll be Loctite'ing my mounts down if I heven't already...

Happy Thanksgiving to All
May your day be filled with good food, family and friends :)

Hi KRH, Sorry man I never heard of L4D although it does look cool. I bet Thrillhouse would like that game but with what he shoots Zombies with he'd probably be replacing his monitor lol
I looked at the intro It's amazing what the graphics look like these days.
I haven't played a computer game since 98, Back then it was Duke Nukem and Doom :D . My buddy Mike use to keep me up till all hrs of the night, we would play over a modem. He lost his battle with leukemia Nov 23,1998 and well I haven't touched one since.

Hey sprintst, A paint filled mannequin head, now that could get messy :D hehehe Love to see that in the scope
Yes with guns loctite is your friend, with my Remington it was the screws that hold the back ring to the rail
