On that note...my twin brother went ice fishing on a rare day of wind with smooth ice and no ripples. He held onto his equipment opened his jacket and let the wind push him across the lake forward while holding the makeshift sales. He said he could never really explain how cool it was to be moving like 15 knots while standing straight up crossing a lake. the ice was 8 inches. very rare to be open and glassy.

Cool! Well, not really. Whatever happened must have been painful.. Looks like my wrist, except my plate looks like a T. I only have 6 screws. Looks like they forgot to tighten down a couple. Did the DeWalt battery go dead??!!

Got tboned by a chevy trailblazer, I was a passenger in a ford escape -hit my side, it's feeling pretty good now, butterfly break of the ulna and dislocated elbow. Believe it or not my bloodpressure was normal, I was in shock so the pain came later

Ok, so I tested my deer rifle to see if the accuracy had changed from the last time I went to the range. Welllll, it started acting up again. It wasn't being very consistant. I never tried adjusting the scope because the rounds weren't grouping. Time for a new scope. Had the old Redfield for 25+ years. Soooo, I got on Cabela's hotline and ordered a Leupold VX II late last week. I've wanted a Leupold for many years(granted, it's by no means their top of the line). It arrived yesterday. Yea!!!!! Mounted it to the rifle this a.m. and took it out to the range this afternoon with my buddy.

Put the target up at 100yds(I'm feeling positive it will at least be in the ballpark). Wrong! Shot a round and couldn't find it anywhere. Even had meat wrapping paper to extend the target. Never even saw dust fly from the backstop. Went to the 25yd target and tried again. Shooting way low. Crank her up close and went back to the 100yd target. Had the scope cranked as high as it would go and it's still 3" low! What the.... Figured I'm screwed. Checked the mount over, everything looked fine, screws are tight.

Go home, pissed. Call Leupold. Told them I'm 3" low and can't adjust the scope anymore. They ask what gun? Remmington 7400(semi auto). They said, that's a common problem with the 7400 and 7600(said also the Ruger 10/22). Although, it doesn't happen to all 7400 or 7600's. I guess I'm just lucky. They told me they're going to send me a .012 shim that will mount under the rear of the scope base to raise it. It will have holes for the mounting screw to go thru, I guess, and should raise the round 18".

My Redfield never had that problem. Something doesn't sound right. Sounds like a scope issue to me. I wonder if they tell whoever that their gun, whatever make and model it may be, has had problems with that scope? I've never heard of putting shims under a mount. Usually, the scope adjustments should compensate for any deviations. Anyone else have this issue????????

I had a .30-06 that had the same problem. The range guy grabbed an empty shotgun shell and made a shim on the spot. We put it under the scope on the rear mount and got the gun sighted in quickly. Might be worth a "shot" for you too!

Yeah, it's a new Weaver mount. Lapping? I would have to say no because I'm not sure what you mean? I didn't waste any more shells trying to group them when I couldn't get it sited in. Windage is right on. The scope responded well to all my changes. I was using a full rest. The forestock and butt were fully supported. I still find it odd that this is happening.

BWR1953 is the first person I've heard of that had to shim...

Lapping the rings is the use of a very precise steel rod that is the diameter of the scope, mounted in place of where your scope goes, .

Lapping compound is applied to the contact surface, and you cycle it back and forth in an oval motion , and it removes any imperfections in either the installation alignment, or the rings themselves.

I lap every set of rings I have, makes for a nice solid mount and assures less strain on the tube of the scope by aligning them properly. I am surprised at how many people do not use this method after just spending big bucks on a scope...

First I've ever heard about lapping. I don't know of anyone that's done it, except yourself. I understand how that can help. Never thought of switching the rings. They look identical, but, it wouldn't take much variation between the 2 to change the point of impact.

Yeah, I swapped the mounts on my .30-06, but that made it worse. It was really expedient to use that shotshell shim though. Got me on target without having to leave the range.

WIMUSKY- I understand. A lot of folks get all excited about a new scope, go home and just install it.

I learned about it lapping when I got into prairie doggin'.... Much more precision required in all sorts of ways.

I had a set of rings that just would not come around, so I chucked 'em.

I would rather see you lap it before shimming it, as shimming may put additional strain on the scope....

Right now you have two parallel mounting surfaces on the bases, and raising the height of one will make them different heights.

Then you shim one up. They are no longer the same height , ( this assumes you gun mounting points are not off though)

Then you mount the scope across the two parallel surfaces, that are not at the same height. The result is that the scope is crossing four points that are not in the same plane of the scope tube...... This puts a lot of strain on the scope, unless you lap it to correct this problem

Actually, I mounted the scope right away because I didn't know there was such a thing as "lapping" a mount.

The shim shouldn't have any negative affect on the scope since I have a 1 piece base. As the whole base moves with the shim, so will the rings and scope. There will be a ever so slight angle to the base. I guess .012 on the one end and 0 on the other. Haven't looked at the vid you provided yet.

I did, however, swap the rings and went to the range. It did help, but is still low by 1 1/2". Even if it brought it right in, I still wouldn't have any "up" adjustment if needed in the future.

I'm going to check out the vid and go from there. Appreciate the help....

I hear what your saying. Or as my daughter would say(I think this is right), "I'm pickin' up what you're layin' down". Kids.. I'm guilty as many others at looking at the most complicated solution to the problem, because I feel "it can't be that easy" when most of the time it is.

However, in this situation, I do know the importance of sticking with a particular round. I use Federal Powershok 180gr soft points. I switched from Remmington quite a few years back. I just thought Federals gave me better results. I've stuck with them ever since.

But even if I was using another manufacturer and a different grain round, I still should be able to dial it in initialy. If I changed manufacturers and bullet grain after I zeroed it in, then I would have an issue.

Now if you're talking the same Lot#, that may make a slight difference, But there again, using the shells from 1 box a person should be able to sight it in. All I know is, it's frustrating.................

I've been hunting for 35+ years and never came across this issue. I guess that's why I don't understand why this should be happening. I would think if it happens with one scope, it should happen with all. No matter what the manufacturer. At least when mounting them on the same firearm and the same mount.

It doesn't make sense seeing you never had a problem with the redfield. Shimming one side would suggest that the mounts were not parallel with the barrel.

My house is "THE HOUSE" in the neighborhood, there are 10 kids bikes and scooters on my front lawn at any given time. THE TOWN says this is illegal, against code!!!! Bikes are to be out of sight .

I have all to do not to go punch someone in the head. Last time I got this upset someone got beat down in an elevator when they tried to open their mouth.

What is wrong with people, you have a problem with me, my kids or property come to me!!!!! DON'T be a little Pu$$! and call the town GROW A SET!!!!

You're right, it doesn't make sense. I had the redfield on the same mounts and didn't have this problem. I think it's a scope issue and Leupold is down playing it. I believe the shim will work. I just think something was messed up in the construction of the scope. This model scope has only been around for a couple of years. The shim is even drilled to match the screws in my base. They never asked what mount I'm using. Sounded like this problem is well known by Leupold.

As far as your neighbors, that's pathetic. I don't understand why people are so interested in what others are doing. I mean really, bikes? Heck, when I was growing up there were bikes laying everywhere! Kids running the neighborhood being kids. There was never any trouble. Trashed out cars maybe, but bikes??!! It's amazing how a few can dictate how others live based on the likes or dislikes of the complaintants. This world is getting crazier by the minute. I can't believe you actually have a town code on this.
This is a classic example on, "what is happening to us".............
